Mike accepted the Unsung Hero Award, a new initiative

by our District Governor, for this, Mike will attend a

special event in Yakima May 14th. Mike’s coffee fund

has been a huge contribution to our club coffers.

Egehan takes the plunge, New Year dip at Sunoka

Beach. Summerland's Rotary Exchange Student,

Egehan Solak, from Turkey, kicked off the New Year

by taking a plunge into Okanagan Lake at the

Summerland Kinsmen Club's 31th Annual Polar Bear

Dip. Way to go, Egehan!

Our club was fortunate to have Kim Wise,

School Counsellor from Summerland

Secondary School, speak at our meeting

this morning about a two-day Wellness

Retreat that was created for Grade 9 and

10 students at Summerland Secondary

School. The annual "Unity Retreat"

features workshops on self-awareness,

team building, cooperation and anti-

bullying. Grade 11 and 12 students from

the school assist with the workshops.

This will be the thirteenth year

President, Roch was pleased to

present, Brad Besler, with a cheque for

$250 to assist him with the costs of

organizing a benefit concert in aid of the

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Brad is putting on the concert at Centre

Stage Theatre on March 19th and is

currently looking for local talent to take

part in this fundraiser. Brad can be

President, Roch was pleased to present

fellow Rotarian, Lesley Vaisanen, with a

donation of $300 at our meeting this

morning. Lesley will be leaving her home

and business later on this month to spend

six weeks helping refugees on the Greek

Island of Lesbos. Lesley, who will be

paying her own travel expenses, is raising

funds to purchase much needed supplies

for the refugees.

Rotarian Choice: Member of the Month

John Kemp

One of our newest members, Leslie Vaisanen has arrived on the Island of Lesbos in Greece to assist the

Syrian refugees on their plight to immigrate to Europe, her plan is to work with Lighthouse for the next six

weeks.

Our out going Exchange Emma Thompson will be leaving for Hungary, and Sylvia Mott will be

leaving for Germany (Osoyoos Club )

Denese is planning the SSS $100 challenge, and the Public Speaking competition

John is one our longest

serving members, 31 years,

McDonalds, always has a

great story loaded with

humour, Ann has been

responsible for leading the

Blossom Pageant for our

club for years
