Finals are typically a timeo stress and cramming, but ortwo ormer student-athletes, lastspring was a time to discuss a

way to put an end to the lack opride at UNC Charlotte.

While studying last semesteror exams, juniors BrendenHoover and Rob McCormick

were disturbed by the signicantamount o other schools apparelon UNC Charlottes campus andthe lack o pride the studentbody shows or this university.

Last spring I rememberstudying in the library, and

we were talking about howembarrassing the lack o pride isto this university, said Hoover.Especially since we both rancross country and track orCharlotte. It was like a slap inthe ace almost because it wasas though we were working ornothing. We had a lot o ideas onhow to advocate UNC Charlotteand increase the pride.

With the determination tomake a change, the Facebookgroup, I it isnt 49er gear, getit out o here, was launched andreceived immediate responserom current students andalumni. Currently the Facebookgroup has more than 600members.

With the overwhelmingresponse to the Facebook group,Hoover and McCormick decidedto create a student organizationthat was devoted to benetingthe university, increasing prideand eliminating the disrespect

that comes rom a student bodythat some eel shuns its aliation

with UNC Charlotte. Thus theUniversity Advocacy Group(UAG) was born.

The UAGs mission isto increase the pride at thisuniversity, not just throughathletics, but through all acetsthat UNC Charlotte and thesurrounding community has tooer the student body.

A common goal shared bycurrent members o the UAG isto increase pride by eliminating

other schools gear by reducingdisrespect, said Hoover.

Even though the UAGis one o the newest studentorganizations, ideas orpromoting the university areconstantly fowing rom the co-ounders.

We have a great core groupcurrently running the UAG.Rob and I are very thankul orthe dedication and hard workrom Patrick Schallenkamp[treasurer], and Jamey Anderson[Vice President o PublicRelations], said Hoover.

The UAG is currently workingon planning events to promotethe organization. The ocers othe student organization are alsodesigning t-shirts to hand out to

those students who continually wear other schools gear oncampus.

My personal goal is orsomeone who wears otherschools apparel on our campus;to have them not make it throughthe whole day without someonesaying something to them, saidHoover.

The Advocacy Group is notonly reaching out to the studentbody and alumni who eel verystrong about the lack o pride. The Charlotte 49ers AthleticDepartment is appreciativeo the ounders and theentire organizations eorts toeliminate the lack o 49er prideon campus.

There is no pressure likepeer pressure, said AthleticDirector Judy Rose. And thereis no better time to be a Ninerand show support by wearingour school colors and our logos. The success o our alls sportsand the excitement aroundboth basketball teams is reasonenough, but then just thinkabout ootball.

Oct. 30, The Evasons spookedand amazed the audience inMcKnight Hall with theirsupernatural perormance. Onthe day beore Halloween, theCampus Activities Board (C.A.B)brought The Evasons back tocampus to entertain the audienceas a little pre-Halloween treat.

According to evason.com, Je and Tessa Evason are aninternationally acclaimedhusband and wie MentalistDuo, who have been entertai ningaudiences all over the worldsince 1983. They are consideredtwo o the top mentalists inthe world and have appearedon television shows like TheWorlds Greatest Magic andPowers o the Paranormal onNBC and FOX.

Acts included cell phone mindreading. Je picking a randomemale audience member. While

Tessa was looking the otherway, Je asked the volunteer towithdrawal her cell phone, skimher contact list and stop on anyperson she wanted, as long as,they were not in attendance.Once the person was selected,Tessa identied the audiencemember by her rst and lastname and recited the name andnumber o the person o whomshe chose.

Sophomore Jamal Potter who,was chosen rom the audience toparticipate in an act, said, I was

a little skeptical about all o thatpsychic and paranormal activityI hear about, but right now Impretty much convinced. Ivenever seen anything like this. It

was amazing because she didnteven know me and she was ableto identiy me out o all o thesepeople in here.

The crowd grew moreengaged as the acts continuedand became more dicult to

understand. Asthe night wenton, the showseemed to drawthe audience in,leaving them

    wanting moreand lingering asit concluded.

I wish it was a longershow. Beore Ieven came tothe show, I readthe descriptionand wasi m m e d i a t e l yintrigued to seei it was true ornot. I wantedto know howexactly theydo what theydo, said juniorTeresa Herman. When I wascalled out othe audience

and she knewmy name, it washard or me tobelieve. I guessshe ed o omy energy, buteither way I was

bafed by what happened. All omy doubt towards any o thisstu is clea red, now Im denitelya believer. The duo perormedan entertaining show and, whilesome audience members wereskeptical, by the time the show

was over, they were not sure whatto believe. The night ended witha monstrous round o applauseand a slew o questions or theEvasons.

This was a good themedevent, being that Halloween

is tomorrow. The Evasons were here two years ago and were so amazing that we hadto bring them back. It was avery interesting show. saidsophomore Sha-Keieam Downs, the C.A.B director o the event.Im not saying any o this isimpossible but its more alongthe lines o something interestingthan real. Im not saying its notreal either.

many stage directors (in thiscase, stage rockers), the showmust go on. A couple urbankids, a beat and a mic constructa dangerous environment whensomeone drops the words hip-hop. Yes, this was dangerous.I mean blow your minddangerous.

Calling upon a riend, Roysterrecruited emcee Nemesis torock a segment in place o Ellis.Nemesis did not disappoint. Withhis mic-rocking rhymes, Nemesislaid down three songs or theaudience with little preparation.Nemesis still sounded like a proand showed that sometimes, thetalent to entertain a crowd justcomes naturally. He denitelyimpressed with his word nesse, and let the stage with theaudience trying to decipher the

words he spit.Nemesis sounded like an

artist who should be watched, should he get his 15 minuteso ame. A practitioner o thepen and poetics, Nemesis gavea good opening act, and a goodrepresentation o what talent is

    hidden inside many Charlotteartists.

When it comes to hip-hopin Charlotte, there seems to bea lot o controversy within theculture. Local artist Sun 7 said,Ive watched Power 98 playeveryones music except theirlocals music. Sun 7 isnt theonly artist with something tosay about Charlottes seemingly

overlooked hip-hop scene. In a recent article orCreative Loang Charlotteartists, Johnny Madwreck said itbest, Charlotte has everythingit needs to have an extremelysuccessul hip-hop scene, butthe problem is everything is toospread out Weve got a hugemulticultural university with novenues anywhere near it. Werealso missing the credibility orbeing known or hip-hop. Weremissing that one big rap hit,

The concert put on by S.U.and the Universal Fam showed

what Charlotte hip-hop has tooer and with a diverse set oacts, Charlottes got a lot.

The second act showcasedLege & Sha-Blaze who, in totalrespect, didnt promote the

unique eel the other artists wereeeling. This group produced

entertainment, but didnt reallysound dierent rom everyother musician you nd o MTVor BET. The words hit you,but many ell short leaving theaudience without a great vibe.Overall, they were a good lleror the rst and second acts, but they were missing a key

ingredient, originality. The third and nal act was S.U., Mr. Royster himsel.Dropping three songs (one super-explicit) S.U. gave the crowd asample o his diverse capability.Clearly inspired by some othe ounders o hip-hop, S.U.ssongs dealt with the struggleso urbanites, bad relationship

with the benet o good sex, andthe old mantra o power to thepeople. All the acts deservedve mics or the eort put intotheir work.

The night ended withdistribution o ree mixtapesand a well-wish or the recedingaudience. Charlotte hip-hop hasa lot to oer, demonstrated bythe acts Wednesday night. EvenUNC Charlotte has a couple o

    budding stars.

Every year 5 to 20 percent o the UnitedStates population is inected with theinfuenza virus. On average, about 200,000

people are hospitalized ater contracting thefu and 36,000 people die rom fu-relatedcauses each year according to the Center orDisease Controls (CDC) website.

This happens every year with the seasonalfu. Americans protect themselves by gettinga fu shot at the beginning o every fu season. They stock up on NyQuil and save up theirsick days.

Then, the swine fu hit and Americapanicked.

There have been 4,958 conrmedhospitalizations rom H1N1 reported tothe CDC rom Aug. 30 to Oct. 10. Duringthe same time period, there have been 292conrmed deaths rom H1N1.

Are these numbers drastically higherthan those rom the seasonal fu? Does thisrequire the president to declare a state oemergency?

On Sept. 11, 2001, ormer President Bushdeclared a state o emergency. I agree thatthe declaration was completely valid orthe situation. On Oct. 24, 2009 PresidentObama declared a state o emergency or theH1N1 fu.

Wait, the fu is a state o emergency?Dierent types o the fu circulate everyyear, so does this fu warrant a state o

    emergency?Lets compare the symptoms. The

symptoms o the 2009 H1N1 fu are ever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, chills, atigue and occasionally, vomitingand diarrhea. The symptoms o the seasonalfu are ever, headache, atigue, cough,

sore throat, muscle aches, runny nose andoccasionally, vomiting and diarrhea. Wait aminute; they have all o the same symptoms.

According to this logic, every year the fushould be declared a state o emergency.

I will be the rst to admit that I rush outevery year and get my fu shot. I am terriedo throwing up and every fu season I takeprecautions to avoid it. I am also going toget my H1N1 fu shot as soon as it is ava ilableto students. However, I do not think it is anemergency and it is not the end o the worldto not get the shot.

While the H1N1 fu may not be anemergency in itsel, the ear surroundingthe fu has put the health care industry ina state o emergency. The pressure on theindustry may have led to the declaration o astate o emergency. The White House pressoce released this statement regarding thedeclaration:

The rates o illness continue to riserapidly within many communities acrossthe Nation, and the potential exists orthe pandemic to overburden health careresources in some localities. Thus, inrecognition o the continuing progression othe pandemic, and in urther preparation asa Nation, we are taking additional steps to

acilitate our response.Perhaps it is necessary to view the

declaration as a method to help the eorts othe health care industry instead o as the fuitsel being the emergency.

I or one do not view this seasons fu asan emergency, but simply an annoyance. I

trust that the Obama administration willcontinue to do what they believe is best, butI am not panicked over swine fu.

    Dear Mr. Conner,

I am a ormer militaryanalyst and hold a degree inintelligence operations and Iam working towards another inpolitical science. In regards toyour statement about the recentpolls where Americans are splitover the Aghanistan issue, Idont think we should use that asgrounds to negate a decision tosend troops. Wh ile I believe it isimportant or Americans to havea voice and be interested, I dontthink most o them are qualied

to make these calls. Most o the men and women

making these decisions, toinclude Gen. McChrystal, havespent many years studying thisarea, have a masters and/ordoctoral education on it, andhave been there to see it a ewtimes. Also you point out Sovietailure in Aghanistan; are youaware that the Soviet ailure

was probably due to Americansupport o Aghanistan againstthe soviets?

Further more, in responseto your statement saying, Thepurpose o the US militaryshould be to ensure the peopleo the United States are sae,not ensure stability or a oreigngovernment; would you not

agree that stability in oreigngovernments will help ensure thesaety o the United States? Do

we all think that pulling out othe Middle East and letting theterrorists declare victory there

will help anyone? Do we notall remember that when 9/11

happened our presence there was minimal at best? The areawould turn into a large terroristtraining g round where they do asthey please, including commonpractice o persecuting those

who dont ollow their viewsor rules. One example was ina province where the Talibanrules; a young man and woman

went against a Taliban arrangedmarriage and they were bothdragged through the streets andhung as examples.

We are in this stage in Americaright now where everyone looks

to revolt on every decision thegovernment makes. It happened

with ormer president Bush, andnow with a completely oppositePresident Obama. For some othe population it will always bedamned i you do and damned iyou dont.

When we go to help peoplewho plead and beg or our help, people cry why are we there, its none o our business. Then

when you have a situation likeDarur people say, Why arent

we helping these poor people. All in all, I only have an opinion

just like everyone else, so myend state solution is to let thosepeople who are qualied makedecisions on these issues basedo o act based analysis. Until

we study it or about 12-15 moreyears and go live there a ew timeswe need to cease to be so criticaland realize that our opinion issimply that, an opinion.

Lately it seems pilots have been in thenews but not or saving their plane ull opassengers ater a bird few in the engine.Instead, it is the pilots carelessness and lacko attention that is causing great buzz.

On Oct. 21, a Northwest Airline planecarrying 144 passengers missed the airportby 150 miles. According to the National

Transportation Saety Board, Capt. TimothyCheney and First Ocer Richard Cole wereapparently using their personal laptops toreview scheduling. Neither pilot was aware othe airplanes position until a fight attendantcalled and asked about their estimated timearrival. It was only then that the captainrealized that they had passed the airport.

Imagine the concern among air traccontrol. They repeatedly attempted toestablish contact between the pilots, yet onlyreceived silence rom the radio. Eventuallycontrollers had to ask other planes in the airto attempt to contact the Northwest plane.

Fighter jets were even placed on alert asa precaution.

Even though the passengers were not madeaware o the pilots fying over the airport, they are being oered $500 rebates. Probably

just to prevent anyone rom suing. On Oct.27, the Federal Aviation Administrationalso revoked the pilots licenses. I I was a

passenger, I am not sure i justice has stillbeen met at this point. Knowing that thesepilots removed their headphones and were

well immersed in their computers makesme think o all the terrible things that couldhave happened. Obviously, these are not therst pilots to put their passengers at risk, as itseems to have become a common trend overthe last year.

On Aug. 8, a mid-air collision between atour helicopter and a small plane occurredover the Hudson River. Supposedly, theplane ran into the rear o the helicopter. Asreported on ABC News, planes fying south,

as this one was, are required to fy alongthe New Jersey side o the Hudson River.A mistake made by the pilot, rom eithercarelessness or lack o knowledge.

By simply googling plane crashes, there isheadline ater headline o avoidable crashesrom this year. Jan 21, three killed as airorce planes collide. May 7, two small planescollide in Florida, two killed. Sept. 10, smallplanes collide over Arizona. Oct. 11, twosmall planes collide over central Louisiana.Since all these incidents were collisions it canbe presumed that these crashes were due topilot errors.

Whats bafing is in a decade whentechnology advances by the minute, westill see as many pilot error mistakes as

we saw in the 50s and 60s. According toplanecrashino.com the number o piloterror, plane crashes have consistently stayedin the 40 and 50 range t hroughout the last 50years. Scary statistics especially when youreputting your lie in someone elses hand.

However, technology can only do somuch when it is the pilots that are ultimately

causing these crashes. Should there bestricter guidelines or people to obtain theirpilot license? Do uture pilots need years opractice, instead o just an hour amount? Atthis point, the answer would have to be yes.

I want to know that my pilot is not easilydistracted by his or her computer, that theyhave their radio and headphones on at alltime, and therules o the sky.One suggestion

is having camerasin the pilotcockpit. This

way pilots maybe more careulabout certainactions they do,knowing thatthe passengersare observingtheir every move.Maybe this waythey wont reachor their laptopsor carelesslytake o theirheadphones, iso, the passengersshould have ullrights to exit theirseats and take thesituation into theirown hands.

Body image is one o the mostcontroversial topics right now,and 23-year-old French-Swedishsuper model Filippa Hamiltonknows that better than anyone.

Back in Oct., a Ralph Laurenad suraced that eatured anextremely photo shoppedHamilton. In the ad, her hips

were as wide as her head and herproportions were very distorted. The ad, which appeared only inone Japanese department store, soon took over the internetand created controversy amongsociety. On Oct. 15, Hamiltontold the New York Daily Newsthat she was stunned that

she had been digitally alteredso severely that she lookedcomically skinny. Ralph Laurenapologized or the image andaccepted responsibility or thephotos hopped image.

However, it didnt end there.Within a ew days, Hamiltonannounced that she had beenred or being too at; accordingto the Daily News, she said thather contract with the clothingcompany was terminated inApril because, at 5-eet-10 and120 pounds, she was too heavy. She claimed to have received aletter stating Were terminatingyour services because you dontt into the sample clothes thatyou need to wear. Ralph Lauren, however, denied the accusation

that they red her because shewas too large. So who are we supposed to

believe? The red model or theamous, brand-name clothingline? Either way, the modelingindustry is under re and it shouldbe. Body image has already

been going downhill or years.Controversies like thi s dont helpthe industrys reputation. Everytime progress is made with plus-size models or raised standards, something happens that puts theintegrity o models and designerlabels at risk again.

For years, designers haveused skinny models or theircampaigns. Not only that, butthanks to the media and the hypesurrounding size and weight, girls are at more risk than everbecause o the pressure. Therespictures o models in bikiniseverywhere, hinting at the actthat skinny is better.

Girls deal with sel-consciousness and peer pressureand growing up during those

delicate pre-teen and teen years. They get a mental image o whattheyre supposed to look like andstrive or it, when in reality, thosemodels that girls are aspiring tobe are unhealthy because o theirminiscule size.

Hamilton hersel said in aninterview with the Today Show,Its not a good example. Everyyoung woman is going to lookat it and think that it is normalto look like that. And its not.Even the model is saying thatit is unhealthy. Thats when itbecomes eye-opening. Societyis so obsessed with body image, looking good and being skinnythat we dont stop to think aboutthe possibly-irreversible damagesthat it causes.

We need to make an eortto promote condence, insteado applauding those that arestick-thin. Girls should grow upeeling comortable, not aspiringto be photo-shop skinny.

Accordingto journalist and historianSteve Sailor, Robinsons entrygreatly helped move alongthe desegregation o America.Sailors historic account onRobinson is noteworthy, but this

was the most recent impressionbaseball has made on America

and it happened nearly 52 yearsago. Ever since, baseball hassteadily declined in importance.

According to encylopedia.com, the rst documentedbaseball game was played in1845. Being that it is a sport thathas been played or over oneand a hal centuries, the originalnovelty o the game has wornthin into nonexistence. Therules were long set, becomingstern and infexible over thelong duration o baseballs

continuance. It is a game orepetition, limiting strategicplay and innovation. The sportsustains on the mere thrill ocompetition, as proven by thecapability o even the largest ostadiums, the Yankee Stadium, being able to ll all 57,000 o itsseats.

At one point o time, thegame captivated the nation.Baseball cards were part oevery young boys childhoodand amilies gathered togetheror radio broadcasts o the game. The eeling is not the sametoday. Many young adults eelapathetic towards Americas

avorite past-time. FreshmanMalcolm Scott, a SystemEngineering major, expresseshis disdain towards the lack o asalary cap in the Major Leagues,Its just a game that people getpaid millions o dollars to play.A-Rod has a 275 million dollarcontract. That certainly does nothelp poverty. It has no impact ontodays society.

Accounting and Financingmajor junior Scott Uhl,expresses his own distaste or

todays version o the game. Itsboring, its boring as hell. I dontthink much o baseball, really.I do watch ESPN everydayand I hear o players abusingsteroids pretty oten. Everyoneis cheating.

It is evident that statistically, more people played and wereinspired by the game o baseball

50 years ago than they are today.Perhaps this is because the storieso unlimited achievement toldby the lie o Jackie Robinsonand the story depicted in ALeague o their Own have beenshattered by the unraveling oone steroid user ater another,

making a mockery o thoseambitious olks that strive toachieve. Unless one considersthe constant media coverage oexposed steroid abusers and thedating lie o A-Rod infuential, baseball is o little signicance.Unortunately, both the timesand the game have changed, andtodays baseball is nothing morethan a trivial game played byoverpaid athletes.

Anita Ikonen, a 26 year old physics student hereat UNC Charlotte has made a handul o paranorma lclams throughout her li e. On Nov. 21st 2009 Anita

will be participating in a preliminary test given bythe Independent Investigations Group (IIG). TheIndependent Investigations Group is the WestCoasts premiere skeptical organization. They havea standing oer o $50,000 to anyone who canprove paranormal abilities under scientic testingconditions and they work with the James RandiEducational Foundation by screening or their OneMillion Dollar Paranormal Challenge.

Anita has claimed that she has abilities rangingrom seeing inside the human body like an MRI,detecting cures or cancer in ood using her powers, amongst other claims she has listed and discussedin detail on her webpage www.visionromeeling.com.

During the preliminary testing done by IIG Anitawill be asked to identiy who out o a multitude ohuman test subjects are missing internal organs. IAnita is successul she can then go on to the ormaltest or IIGs $50,000 Challenge. Potentially ishe then passes this test she will then go or a onemillion dollar prize oered by the godather oskepticism James Randi.

IIG Chair and CFI-Los Angeles ExecutiveDirector Jim Underdown is excited about the

upcoming testing to be done with Anita. WithSylvia Browne, Allison DuBois, and John Edwardrunning around making outrageous claims, and reusing to allow any outside scrutiny, saysUnderdown, its quite rereshing to see someonecome orward and put their money where theirmouth is. Anita Ikonen is a class o applicantthat the IIG reers to as a medical dowser people who claim to be able to sense the insideo the human body and detect illness or deectsin the anatomy. No one has been able to displaythis kind o ability under controlled conditions, claims Underdown, so this will be history in themaking i Anita is able to perorm properly. Welook orward to putting Anitas claims to the test.Regardless o the outcome, this will be quite anevent, promised Underdown.

On hand or these demonstrations will be anumber o members o the IIG, scientists romUCLA and representatives o the media. I Anitathen succeeds in there trials it would represent a

substantial challenge to the practice o medicineand the underlying scientic principles o physics.

When asked about why she was investigatingAnita said Ive experienced interesting andcompelling cases o accuracy in my medicalperceptions, where Ive known things aboutpeoples health that I shouldnt have been ableto know. I must make it clear that I hold severalpossible nal conclusions o this investigation

in mind. For instance, I might be picking up onsubtle and external clues without realizing it andthat translates synthetically into correspondingimages and elt inormation. The cases o accuracyIve had so ar compel me to nd out. I nd plentyo reasons to investigate this experience.

When Anita was asked about what she woulddo i her tests concluded that her perceptions donthave any correlation with reality she responded

with I would be pleased to nally conclude thisinvestigation and to have reached a nal answer. My objective is not to hope or one explanation overanother, because regardless o what the answer is,I get to keep the experience and nothing changesreally. I would not be embarrassed i I ailed ascientic paranormal test. I have not investedemotionally or otherwise in passing a paranormaltest.

One o Anitas main disbelievers is a mannamed Jim Carr who runs the webpage againstAnita ound at www.stopvisionromeeling.com.Here when asked the question concerning whatexactly it is he wanted to stop Carr replied withObviously, I cannot literally stop Anita (VFF)rom doing anything. However, I and others wouldlike to see Anita stop spouting her pseudo-scienticantasies and actually approach her claims in ascientic manner. We want her to stop playinggames and actually submit to scientic testing. He then goes on to state that he thinks she needsto stop diagnosing people just rom what she eelsrom them because he eels that this may lead tosomething bad happening due to the inormationpeople are given.

In the end the debate over these claims willnever stop until we are given the results rom thetesting on Nov. 21st . That leaves us all with ourown thoughts on the subject, and the ongoingdebate on whether claims such as there are realor just elaborate hoaxes. Keep an eye out online atthe sites listed and see or yoursel what the testsprove.

On Sept. 20, the cast o Seineld reunited orthe season premier o Curb Your Enthusiasm andnow there is talk o a reunion movie with the casto Friends. Although, is reuniting shows such agood idea? Realistically, why ruin a good thing?

The season premier marked Curbs highestratings in the ve years o the show. Accordingto The Hollywood Reporter, the rst episodeairing at 9/8 central brought in 1.6 million viewers, combined with the viewers or the episodes same-night rerun one hour later, the shows total reached2.6 million. In this case, the reunion o the ourcast members, ater an 11-year departure, seemedto have been a hit with the audience.

Probably the biggest actor to this success is that

it was not an actual reunion show. By combiningthe characters with another show, the creators wereable to merge both audiences. This also helped toavoid the clich story lines that most reunion showsall into.

However, will the Friendsmovie be so lucky?A British newspaper, The London Daily Mail,

reported that all cast membershave agreed to reunite or a

    movie version o the

hit series. Word is the lm will come out in thesummer o 2011, seven years ater the nal seasonaired. Personally, Friends was my avorite showbut I honestly dont know i I want to see how manydierent story lines they can cram in a two hourmovie. Catching up on all the divorces, kids thathave been had, and relationships that have beenmade in the seven-year period is not how I wantto remember one o the greatest shows. The showended on a good note, why ruin that?

Its similar to movie sequels. The best thing todo when a movie is a big hit in the box oce isor the director to soak it in and walk away. Theyshould spend their success on a BMW or a newhouse, not by creating a sequel only to regret it

when it bombs in the box oce.For instance, Paramount Studios is allegedly

exploring the options o a sequel to the dark horsemovie Paranormal Activity. Beginning witha limited release on Sept. 25, the lm made $67million domestically. In addition, considering themovie only cost $15,000 to make, it has alreadyearned greater success then originally imagined.Forgive me i I sound l ike a broken record, but whyruin a good thing?

What makes the studio think a sequel willreach the same success as

the original, especiallyconsidering its ahorror fick. Nothingagainst scary moviesbut I think its sae tosay that the Saw andHalloween movies havegone a little over board.Enough already.

Just because manyviewers tune into thereunion shows and

movies does not meanthey let satised. Whatpeople remember romtheir avorite show, orthat entertaining movie, may not have the sameimpression the secondtime around.

    Reunion shows dont

always live up to the hype

Oregon-based and pop rock sensation Hockeys new album,Mind Chaos is an apt name. It contains an eclectic, almost chaoticmix o multiple genres that oers music that is, i not resh or new, interesting, thoughtul , and catchy. The track Song Away promisesas much to listeners by insisting, this is big town music.

The band is comprised o lead singer Ben Grubin, guitarist BrianWhite, bassist Jeremy Jerm Reynolds, and drummer AnthonyStassi, and is currently based in their hometown o Portland,Oregon. Grubin and Reynolds ormed the band ater meeting atthe University o Redlands in Redlands, Caliornia. Mind Chaos

was released Sept. 28, 2009, immediately beore the group signedwith Capitol Records.

We wanted to make dance music that was inectious, saidJerm on the bands website about the creation o the album.Almost every song is upbeat, energetic, and very catchy. Preacher

has been stuck in my head or hours since I listened to it.The musics energy is so strong and powerul, that even on the

rst listen it has the potential to mask some surprisingly intelligent, thoughtul lyrics given their inectious dance music goal. Thevocalist goes back and orth in Too Fake about how hes too akeor the world because hes gonna use [his] lie or someone else, yeah, but not really because he actually has too much soul or the

world and the whole thing is just a game. They deviate rom their up-tempo style only once on the last

song o the album, Everybodys the Same Age, and its a shamethey only do it once. The song strongly hints at the groups abilityto produce quality music that is slow, introspective, and even stillhumorous.

This proves that the bands range is pretty wide and I think theyshould go urther with it on uture projects. Grubin sotly teasesthat he only eels three times a year. Psych! Everyone eels all thetime. Lyrics like that in the song hover on the proound end osimple, and t extremely well with the rhythm o the song.

Whether youre into pop, rock, or any o the other genres thegroup dabbles in, Hockey is worth a shot. I youre into Jet, theKillers, OK Go, or Hot Hot Heat, youre likely to outright all inlove with them as I have.

Unortunately a live show is impossible or the oreseeableuture, as the band will be beginning an international leg o theirnew tour that will take them to places such as Tokyo, Osaka, andLondon. Board to Death is a new hit comedy show on HBO that hasalready been picked up or a new season, halway into the rst. Theshow eatures Jason Schwartzman and Zach Galianakis o (well-known or his role as Allan in The Hangover).

Jonathan played by Schwartzman is a down and out proessionalwriter whose girlriend just broke up with him or smoking to muchmarijuana and drinking too much wine. Ater the break up hebegins a private detective agency on Craigs List and tries to helpout dierent people solve missing persons cases or trying to recoveritems that were stolen.

Jonathan is assisted by his best riend Ray (Galianakis) and hisboss George (hilariously played by Ted Danson o Cheers andBecker) whose obsession to drugs and women keeps Jonathan in a

job. Many o the episodes try to put these characters in har ms way,as they have to gure out a way to keep out o trouble while workingon a particular case.

The comedy in this show comes rom Jonathan himsel, as he isnot all quite there when it comes to normal everyday lie. Ray alsoprovides substantial comedic relie because his love lie involves asingle mother who has little time or him.

In my mind George (Danson) is the unniest o them all because

o his bluntness to the situation. He calls the shots like he seesthem and drowns in sel-pity or not making better choices inhis lie. Basically this show is about three guys that are down

or the count trying to do some good in their lie by solvingmysteries.

The plot is really well laid out and does not have any sidebreaks that would lose the viewer. The content o the show isor mature audiences only, but it is worth the tons o laughsthat you have during the show.

Jonathans detective skills are highly irregular and hewould not be the next eld agent on CSI. He usually juststumbles upon an answer and uses it to solve the case. Hereally does not really search or clues. However, the cluesseem to nd him.

All and all Jonathan seems to have control o the doublelie so ar, but I wonder what is going to happen to cause allthis to come crashing all down? USAs Burn Notice has avery similar plot line, but the creators established a back storyto Michael Westens character.

Board to Death has yet to set up a back story or thesecharacters and i they do not I do not think it will last longno matter how unny the show might be. Whatever the casemaybe it should not stop you rom watching this hilariousshow rom HBO. Check out Board to Death when it airs on

For those unamiliar with the TV world, USANetwork has become notorious in recent yearsor producing quality, intelligent, and extremely

witty programs. Unless you havent switched awayrom the analog world, then you may have brushedthrough channels and happened to come acrossshows like the Emmy award-winning Monk, orthe action-packed Burn Notice. USA is knownor its original programming and has brought yetanother show into its mitts.

White Collar, the new show USA has beenshoving into your eyelids, premiered October23rd. White Collar ollows the tale o a super-intelligent convict Neal Carey and FBI agentPeter Burke. Carey begins the show by escapingrom a prison under the guise o a security guard.

In case you were wondering he pulls this oby using a uniorm he bought online using the

wardens wies security card (awesome, since heis maximum security prison). He continues hisescape by buying a yellow raincoat rom a streetvendor and posing as valet at JFK airport. He thensteals a very expensive Jaguar and gets a $100 tip.

Carey heads to his ex-girlriends apartmentonly to realize that hes two days late. Distraught,he patiently waits or Burke to nd him and sendhim back to prison.

Carey, though incarcerated, proposes an oerto Agent Burke. He wants to assist him in catching

a criminal Burke has been chasing or years.Initially, Burke turns him down, but Burke knows

his abilities and believes that Carey could be agood asset to his investigation as well as others.

A quick hint on this show: Never miss the rstepisode o any show that tells a story, because like

skipping a chapter in Harry Potter, youmay never gure out whats going on.

The premise o the show is the tellingo two tales. It ollows Carey and hisongoing search or his partner underthe custody o Burke, and possibly anescape plan, while Burkes story ollowshis proession and his cases searching orcriminals, and sometimes his love lie as

    well.

Supporting characters are used a lotto complement each other and the actorswho play Carey and Burke (Matt Bomerand Tim DeKay) show a connection toeach other. They really show how the copand convict always seem to orm thi s bondbetween them in this genre.

White Collar shows promise as agreat show, but I eel like Im watchingCatch Me I You Can, or a an o CSIsometimes. Believe me, i youve everseen that movie, youd be able to ndsimilarities between Carey and FrankAbagnale. The show may use that qualitya lot, but thats just a piece o charm theshow uses to assist its appeal. Look orWhite Collar to be one o the premiereshows this season.

On Wednesday October28, Robinson Hall openedits doors o the Anne R. BelkTheater to the opening nighto Arthur Millers play TheCrucible. Upon arriving, I wasalready amiliar with the textrom high school, so I eagerlyanticipated the show to begin.

Throughout the play I wasmore than impressed with theactors and actresses that per-ormed that evening.

From the beginning to theend, each perormer had sucha stage presence, representingthe character they were por-traying very well.

I was impressed with how well the actors coped withopening night faws and con-tinued to play their part by

    continuing to enunciate and

project passion in their lines.Since I am amiliar withThe Crucibles story, besidesthe actors bringing more inter-est to the play, I appreciatedthe creativeness o the stagesscenic design.

When reading The Cruci-ble, I gured that i perormed, the stage would be rich witha 17th century eel. HoweverI was surprised when I sawthe stage bare with ew props,as the perormers made eachscene work well.

The play also integratedmusic design with a violinistplaying a melody during eachscene change to emphasize thedrama o Mi llers work.

Along with most o theaudience, I was conused to

why some perormers playedmultiple parts when there was

one who played the same role

throughout the show. It wasuntil ater the show I was ableto come to an understandingby speaking to Lon Bumgar-ner, Director o the show.

It was a created ensemble,so we went with it. We madeit that way because o the dra-matic element o the charactersin order to preserve the lie othe main character, John Proc-tor, said Bumgarner.

John Proctor stays thesame and reuses to change.I was amazed at those who hadto perorm multiple charactersthat evening, and I give a tre-mendous amount o respect tohow they memorized their ev-ery line.

Though some scenes o thetext were let out and the his-torical events had a twist, it wasstill enjoyable to watch.

    Overall, the strategic plan-

ning behind the play along with its dramatic elements, proved its point through themany talented perormers.

Although those that attendedthe perormance loved hersound, very ew people came outto support her at Norms, which

    For some the sh bowl

is empty. In the event FishyFriends, approximately 159goldsh were given away tostudents by Campus ActivitiesBoard Wednesday, Oct. 28 in theStudent Union Rotunda.

Eager students like reshmanKelly Harrold, Pre-Biologymajor, stood in line with ariend waiting or a sh. Shementioned how easy it is to kill ash and how she managed to killa plant known as a Hosta, whichaccording to her is suppose to bequite hardy.

Bamboo, its pretty much allthat I can keep alive. You onlyhave to water it once a week I

was three and I killed a goldsh, ever since then Ive never wentback, said Harrold.

    Others in line included

sisters and students Flowerand Ana Flowers. The Flowerssisters are rom Honduras andstudying under UNC CharlottesEnglish Language TrainingInstitute (ELTI). They heardabout the event through theELTI Announcer, a fyer thattheir proessor hands out to theirclass weekly.

Brandon Bouldings, seniorand Construction Managementmajor, reason or a sh was Justsomething to put somewhere,

    something living.Excitement buzzed down

the line o students waitingto claim their goldsh anddecorate a bowl. Gravel otwo varieties, neutral and neoncolored, were available or thebottom o the bowls. Also, twoseashells per bowl could adornthe shs home.

There were letter stickers andglass rainbow paint to decoratethe outside o the bowls. Many

were adorned with names, likeFishy and Emo.

Specically, Tyesha White, sophomore and InternationalStudies major, named her shMiku ater a Japanese Rockartist.

It was an intense, organizedoperation or CAB members. Its going well, said RhondaAndrews, Pre-CommunicationStudies major. Also, shespeculated that they would be outo sh by 1:30 p.m. by looking atthe extensive line that stretchedinto the Student Unions diningarea.

    Ater patiently waiting,at around 12:40 p.m., I wasin possession o a silver andgreenish goldsh, which I haddubbed Sir G. 7.

Luckily, I had asked ariend or help, who doesnt

want to be named. A warmthank you goes out to him orhelping me cover the event bysaving my spot in line and thengetting another sh or KristenLitcheld, University Times

Editor. He did proess withsurprise, I thought wed be inand out, I didnt think people

would care too much about ash.

Once outside the StudentUnion there was many a passerbythat commented or looked on inenvy o my cute shy. Even a serverat Chick-l-A was curious as to

whereshe couldhave gotten a ree sh.

Sir G. 7 evenaccompanied me to mylast class o the day; hegained some knowledgein Research Methods. I

wish he could have takenmy notes.

    Then wecommuted home,

where he would soon getto live in his homely bowl. His liespan in that bowl lastedless than an hour.

    Maybe he went into shock

due to the change in watertemperature or possibly his

coloration was an indicationo old age. I could wonder a

lietime as to why he passedso suddenly, but Id like tobelieve that my love was eltby Sir G. 7 in the small timethat I knew him.

The comrades o goldshSir G. 7 mourn his departurerom this world, TOD 5:31 p.m.He was buried in the backyard

under a purple Crate Myrtletree next to a cow pasture withthe belongings he owned in thislietime: gravel and a seashell, the second shell was laid on topas a grave marker.

I updated my Facebook statuswith the loss o Sir G. 7, and theoutpouring o kind commentsand condolences were numerousrom riends.

Surprisingly, there is amortality trend. Whites shpassed about ve hours atergetting him too.

As or Harrolds albino sh,she had named him MJ ater the

    late-great Jackson. [MJ]died within 10 hours o

getting him. I cleanedhis water and ed

    him and thepoor thing

    died.

[I] guess he was just ollowingin the pop stars ootsteps. Wegave him a proper burial at thetoilet, but we prayed or him

rst. He needed to go to shyheaven, said Harrold.

On a better sh bowl ront,Harrolds riends sh is stillalive. Lauryns sh is slightlyhyper active. It seems as i itnever stops swimming. Ever.Lauryn loves her new sh andenjoys having him in her room,Harrold said.

Bouldings sh is still alivetoo. Lie is good, it just sits onmy desk and blows bubbles, hesaid. Yet, his girlriends goldshdied Thursday morning.

It might be true that mostgoldsh do not have a longliespan, but many can relate tothe tenderness us as humans eeltowards our pets like goldsh.Either rom childhood or nowin college, the love and loss is a

    worthwhile lie experience.
