For Inspiration Is To Be Shared!

    The Treasure Trove

Foreword Heres a collection of some inspiring thoughts, quotes, poems that I collected in my diary over more than a

decade. Every time I heard or read something that really inspired me, I took hold of my diary to jot it down. And

then, going through my diary the other day I realised that it is time to share them. So I sat down to put them

alongside the pictures that I also find very inspiring in different ways.

Neither the words, nor the pictures herein are mine. I merely collected them and put it in a format for the reader.

For me, this little collection has acted as my treasure trove. A little something that I have and can turn to, when

stuck in a difficult situation. I often say that we all need our fuel stations to recharge our spirits when they are

down. And even the best of us have days when we need a little cheering up. Ofcourse the fuel stations could be

different for different people it could be a cup of coffee, or just a meeting with that one person who always has

positive things to tell you, or reading a book. But one thing is sure we cannot drive our cars or our lives

without the fuel forever or by thinking that one time of recharge will make it last forever. So every now and

then, we need to stop, ruminate over these words which have inspired generations, pick up our entire selves and

then get back to doing what we are doing and do it in the best way we can.

Let nothing stop you! Whether you are having a lovely day or a dull day, read on and dont forget to share. Let

this be a small item on your desktop, one that you can turn to for inspiration whenever need be.

And never, never give up! Go kiss the world!

    Love,

    Avani

    Vivamus et metus.

Brave admiral say but one good word,

What shall we do when the hope is gone?

The words leapt like a leaping sword,

Sail On! Sail On! Sail On! And On!

    - Joaquin Millers

It matters not how straight the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll,

I am the master of my fate,

I am the Captain of my soul.

Suspendisse elementum rhoncus velit. Nulla turpis metus, faucibus nec,

    dignissim at, cursus in, tortor.

When joy takes leave, friends betray,

    Fortune frowns and springs depart,

When you are left to your dismay,

Alone to face with shattered heart,

    The tempest on the shore,

You feel lost as never before.

When things are no more the same.

Try once more and play the game.

You are what you are deep driving desire is,

As your desire is, so is your will,

As your will is, so is your deed,

As your deed is, so is your destiny.

    Knowledge makes us aware,

    rational, open-minded, tolerant

    and progressive. Knowledge is an

    enlightened torch to success,

without which our life would be

    what an anonymous poet

    described:

All life moving to one measure,

    Daily bread and daily butter,

Life of toil, life of sorrow,

Hand to mouth and nothing tomorrow.

    Books are kings treasuries

    treasuries filled not with

    gold, silver, and precious

    stones but with riches more

    valuable than these

    knowledge, noble thoughts,

    and high ideals.

    - Ruskin

Some books are to be tasted, others to

be swallowed and other to be chewed

    and digested.

    - Francis Bacon

A little learning is a dangerous thing.

Drink deep or taste not the pierrean spring

These shallow droughts intoxicate the brain

And drinking largely sobers us again.

    - Alexander Pope

The heights by great men reached and kept,

Were not attained by sudden flight.

But they while their companions slept,

Were toiling upwards in the night.

By perseverance, the snail reached the Ark.

How poor are they who have not patience,

What wound did ever heal but by patience.

    - William Shakespeare

What is patience but an equanimity

which enables you to rise superior

What a piece of work is man!

    How noble in reason!

    How infinite in faculties!

In form and moving, how express and admirable!

In action, how like an angel!

In apprehension, how like a God!

    The beauty of the world!

    The paragon of animals.

    - Shakespeare

    O Joy Of suffering!

    To struggle against great odds,

    To meet enemies undaunted,

To be entirely alone with them,

To find out how much one can stand!

    To look strife, torture, prison,

popular odium, death face to face!

    To mount the scaffold!

To advance to the muzzles of guns with perfect non-

    chalance!

    To be indeed a God!

    - Walt Whitman

Let me but do my work from day to day,

In field or forest, at the desk or loam,

In roaring market place or tranquil room.

Let me but find it in my heart to say,

When vagrant wishes beckon me astray.

This is my work, my blessing, not my doom,

Of all who live, I am the one by whom,

This work can be done in the right way.

Then shall I see it not too great, nor small,

To suit my spirit and to prove my powers,

Then shall I cheerfully greet the labouring hours,

And cheerful turn, when the long shadows fall.

At eventide, to play and love and rest,

Because I know, for my work is best.

    - Henry Van Dyke

All this will not be finished in

the first 100 days. Nor will it be

finished in the first 1000 days,

nor in the life of this

perhaps in our lifetime on this

    planet, but let us begin.

Betrayal of yourself in order not to betray another is betrayal nonetheless. It is the highest betrayal.

Remember the words of Polonius to Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare :

To thine ownself be true, and it must follow as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.

Dont worry about the group. One day it will simply not be there. Yet you will never go away till the end of

    time.

There are many times in life when it will please you to please another. In that case, do it. Only when it does not

please you to please another, refrain from doing it.

Always work like you dont need the money.

Always fall in love like you have never been hurt.

Always dance like nobody is watching.

And always - always live like its heaven on earth.

  • 20

I have set thee at the worlds center, to observe whatever is in the world. I have made thee neither of heaven nor

of earth, neither mortal nor immortal, so that though mayest with greater freedom of choice and with more

honour as though the maker and moulder of thyself fashion thyself in whatever shape thou shalt prefer. Thou

shalt have the power to degenerate into lower forms of life, which are animal; thou shalt have the power out of

they souls judgment to be reborn into the higher forms of life, which are divine.

    - Pico Della Mirandola (God at the creation of Man)

Tell me not in mournful numbers,

Life is but an empty dream!

For the soul is dead that slumbers,

And things are not what they

    seem.

Life is real, life is earnest!

And the grave is not its goal,

Dust thou art, to dust returnest,

Was not spoken of the soul.

    Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,

    Is our destined end or way;

But to act, that our each

    tomorrow,

    Finds us farther than today.

Art is long, and time is fleeting,

And our hearts, though stout and

    brave,

Still like muffled drums are beating,

    Funeral marches to the grave.

In the worlds broad field of battle,

    In the bivouac of life,

Be not like dumb driven cattle,

Be a hero in the strife!

    Trust no future, however pleasant!

Let the dead past bury its dead.

Act, act in the living present,

    Heart within and God overhead.

Lives of great men all remind us,

We can make our lives sublime,

    And departing leave behind us

Footprints on the sands of time.

    Footprints that perhaps another,

    Sailing over lifes solemn main,

    A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,

    Seeing shall take heart again.

Let us then be up and doing,

With a heart for any fate,

    Still achieving, still pursuing,

Learn to labour and to wait.

    - Henry Wordsworth Longfellow

    A Psalm of Life

  • 22

I like the man who faces what he must,

With step triumphant and a heart of cheer,

Who fight the daily battle without fear,

Sees his hope failed, yet keeps unfaltering trust,

That God is God, that somehow true and just.

His plans work out for mortals, not a tear

Is shed when fortune, which the world holds dear

Falls from his grasp, better with love, a crust

Than living in dishonour, envies not

Nor loses faith in man, but does his best

Not even mourns over his tumbled cat,

But with a smile and words of hope, gives zest

To every toiler, he alone is great

Who by a life heroic, conquers fate!

    - Sarah K Bolton

In the fell, clutch of circumstance,

I have not winced, nor cried aloud,

    Under the bludgeonings of chance,

My head is bloody but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and fears,

Looms but the horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of years

Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how straight the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll,

I am the master of my fate,

I am the Captain of my soul.

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever Gods there may be,

    For my unconquerable soul.

  • 24

God, make me brave for life,

    Oh braver than this.

    Let me straighten after pain,

As a tree straightens after the rain.

    Shining and lovely again.

God, make me brave for life,

    Much braver than this.

As the blown grass lifts, let me rise

    From sorrow, with quiet eyes.

    Knowing thy way is wise.

    God, make me brave,

    Life brings such blinding things,

    Help me to see aright

That out of dark comes light.

And like strong winds will we live above them, neighbours to the eagles,

Companions of the snow, and playmates of the sun. Thus do strong winds live.

And like a wind shall I one day blow amidst them, and take away their

souls breath with my spirit. Thus my future willeth it.

    - Nietzche

Kindness, quite simply, is the rent that we must place for the space we occupy on this planet.

It is rare to be born a human being,

It is still more rare to be born without any deformity.

Even if you are born without any deformity,

It is rare to acquire knowledge and education.

Even if one could acquire knowledge and education,

It is still rare to do offerings and tapas,

But for one who does offerings and tapas,

The doors of heaven open to greet him.

    The means to gain

    happiness is to throw out

    for oneself like a spider

    in all directions an

    adhesive web of love and

to catch in all that comes.

    - Aristotle

    Is there a wiser, more

    enlightened way to look at

    this seemingly negative

    situation.

    Every second you dwell on

the past, you steal from the

    future.

Life is no brief candle to me.

Its a sort of splendid torch

which I have got to hold up

for the moment and I want to

make it burn as brightly as

    possible before handing it on

    to future generations.

We must have the courage to be patient. Individual completeness is a private matter. If you fell

down yesterday, stand up today. It is nobodys tragedy but your own. What you are now doing

matters; not what you did. Your life is only a bit of whole. The men of science understand this

    and everyone must understand it.

There is a struggling divinity in everyone. Man persists, man grows and advances

and it is his will to grow and advance. We make a pattern better than we know.

    Keep on with it.

    - Steels last words.

  • 34

Cut your chains and you become

free, cut your roots and you die.

    Differentiating between the two

    requires good judgment,

    something that you acquire only

    through experience and over time.

Until one is committed there is hesitancy, the

chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness.

Concerning all acts of initiative.there is one

elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills

countless ideas and splendid plans : that the

moment one definitely commits oneself, then

    providence moves.

    - WH Murray

Know the true value of time! Snatch, seize and enjoy every moment of it. No idleness, no laziness, no

procrastination. Never put off till tomorrow, what you can do today. Lord Chesterfield

You wake up in the morning. And Lo! Your

purse is magically filled with 24 hours the

    most precious of possessions.

When you get into a tight place and

everything goes against you, till it

seems as though you couldnt hold on a

minute longer, never given up then, for

that is just the place and the time that

the tide will turn. Harriet Beecher

    Stowe

My father digged this hole all his days and never made a

pasture. I have dug it all my days and I have never made a

pasture. But pasture or no pasture, I cant help but dig. For my

father knew and I know that if only you dig enough, a pasture

    can be made here.

    - Robert Louis Stevenson.

Let the sages blame or let them praise, let the goddess of fortune

come or let her go whereever she likes, let death come today, or

let it come in hundreds of years, he indeed is the steady man

who does not move one inch from the way of truth.

    - King Bhartrihari

Whenever I associate with someone, may I think of myself as

the lowest among all and hold the other supreme in the depth of

    my heart!

When I see beings of wicked nature, pressed by violent sin and

affliction, may I hold these rare ones dear as if I had found a

precious treasure! When others, out of envy, treat me badly with

abuse, slander and the like, may I suffer the defeat and offer the

    victory to others!

When the one, whom I have benefitted with great hope, hurts

me very badly, may I behold him as my supreme Guru!

In short, may I, directly and indirectly, offer benefit and

happiness to all beings. May I secretly take upon myself the

karma and suffering of all beings.

eleventh century by the Tibetan saint Langri Thangpa

Success to me is about vision. It is the ability to rise above the immediacy of pain. It is about

imagination. It is about sensitivity to small people. It is about building inclusion. It is about

connectedness to a larger world. It is about personal tenacity. It is about giving back more to

life than you take out of it. It is about creating extra-ordinary success with ordinary lives.
