It can often be a contentious issue of debate of when and how Northern Ireland’s ‘Troubles’ began, who and what isto blame, and even which event in case led us to where we are now. You can go back 30 years, or even 300 years andbeyond for in reality Ireland has been engaged in conflict with England for centuries. Therefore, in order to compile a chronological record of the modern Troubles - the term usually given to the mostrecent conflict, we must mark a defining point of start, which we have taken as partition itself and from which webegan in Issue 1. In turn again, we feel it is equally important to give you the reader some understanding whyevents spiralled as they did into a bloody civil war. This is not another view of the Troubles, this has been done and redone. This is the historical recording of eventscompiled by people from different parts of Belfast who lived through them. Our objective as local historians is tocompile what we hope will be as near as possible a definitive reference to events as they unfolded through the lastthree decades. In terms of research we have used as much material as possible and from diverse perspectives. We areconfident that we have covered events as they were reported at the time. If however you feel that we have eitherleft something out or indeed got something wrong we are more than happy to hear from you. As mentioned abovethis series of publications is the historical recording of the Troubles and all corrections are more than welcome.

Monday 12th June 1972IRA weaponsArmy officials are viewing withgreat concern claims by Libya thatshe is supplying arms to the IRA.The Army believe that this devel-opment, if true, could bring about agreat escalation in the situationhere. They fear that Communistweapons, guns, bazookas rocketsmortars, as well as money and com-munist expertise could becomewidely available. At the momentmost of the IRA’s weapons comefrom America and the ammunitionfrom France, Sweden and Belgium.Intelligence sources have suggestedthat the Armalite rifle seen here onthe streets in recent months hadbeen sent from the Middle East.Altogether ten of the weapons havebeen found in the North. Theweapon, used in Vietnam by Ameri-can forces, fires a .223 bullet, thesmallest military projectile in theworld. But the velocity of theweapon and the way in which thebullet tumbles after leaving the gunmakes it a deadly weapon.Apart from these weapons the IRAdo not have any really modern firepower in their arsenal apart from theodd 7.62 self loading rifle and a fewSterling machine guns, both used by

the British Army. One of the mostabundant weapons in the IRA’s ar-senal and the most effective is the.300 M1 Carbine, an American as-sault rifle developed at the end ofthe World War Two and used ex-tensively in Korea.Perhaps the most popular of all IRAweapons is still the Thompson sub-machine gun which has a cycle rateof 700 rounds a minute. It has beenin existence for some 50 years andoccasionally a very early model hasbeen recovered by the Army dur-ing searches. There have beenmany variations on the basic modelover the years and it is known thatin recent times American students,in sympathy with the IRA, haveopenly purchased the weapons andsent them to Ireland. Three of themodern version of these guns havebeen seized recently in Ireland.Other weapons in use by the IRAare the No. 3 and No. 4 Lee Enfieldrifles, the forerunner of the Army’sself-loading rifle. The IRA alsopossess numerous makes of .45, .38

and .32 pistols and revolvers. There have been rumours that theRussian made Kalashnikov, orAK47 as it is often known, havebeen used by the IRA here.
