Slide 6 Unico Presentation Unico vs. Conventional

• High Static Pressure*• All fittings MUST be tightly sealed• Duct efficiency

• *NOT consider high static pressure by ASHRAE Ratings

Unico Systems are pressurized. We have much higher static pressure than conventional sheet metal HVAC systems. As a result, there is less duct leakage because leaks are more noticeable

Page 6: The Unico System Training Catalogue - Capco Supply€¦ · The Unico System ® The Unico System ® Training Catalogue Outlets are available in styles and finishes to match any décor

Slide 7 Unico PresentationMuch Higher Discharge Velocity

Velocity, ft/min

Conventional

SDHV

Much higher velocity, than a conventional sheet metal system design. However, very little air (maximum of 35 CFM) is used comparatively, plus there is a special sound deadening tubing used

Slide 8 Unico Presentation Unico vs. Conventional

• Roughly half the CFM (200-250 vs. 400)• High Static Pressure (Avg. 1.5” w.c.)• Refrigeration Coil vs. A/C Coil• Greater Temp. Drop in AC• Greater Temp rise in Heat Pump• 1000 to 2000 fpm velocity• Aspiration vs. Diffusion and Throw

Here are the major differences between Unico (SDHV) and a conventional designed sheet metal furnace, The last item, aspiration, is the heart of the Unico system and will be explained in detail next

Slide 9 Unico Presentation Aspiration vs. Throw

Return canbe anywhere

Aspiration “Mixes” the air, conventional systems Throw, Diffuse and Return the air. The high velocity air creates a Venturi effect at the outlet which creates a slight negative pressure at the outlet, which draws in and mixes the air. No drafts, no streaking of dirt and less than 2 degrees temperature difference in the room

Page 7: The Unico System Training Catalogue - Capco Supply€¦ · The Unico System ® The Unico System ® Training Catalogue Outlets are available in styles and finishes to match any décor

Slide 10 Unico Presentation

Aspiration Creates Low Pressure Area at the Outlet

Discharge air quickly mixes with room air lowering the supply air temperature more than 22° in 12”

Aspiration quickly mixes conditioned air with the room air. In this demonstration of aspiration in action the air temperature leaving the outlet is 119 °F (48.5 °C) which quickly drops to 97 °F ( 36.1 °C) within 12 inches (304.8 mm). Similar ambient air mixing takes place in cooling.

The iSeries by Unico

When using a Unico Coil with a TXV (Thermal Expansion Valve) any major equipment brand of air conditioning condensing unit or heat pump may be used

The Unico System also works with Geothermal Heat Pumps, they can be set up for refrigerant based or water-to-water. We make a chilled water coil, then can also handle hot water for these applications

The iSeries by Unico is an inverter heat pump that is meant to work exclusively with the Unico System. The Unico System uses a different coil and blower module, as this unit utilizes EEV (Electronic Expansion Valve) technology instead of TXV (thermal expansion valve). There is a separate training series on this available to you

Slide 19 Unico Presentation Ratings

• Classified as “SDHV” indoor units

The AHRI classifies the Unico System as SDHV (Small Duct High Velocity), these listings can be found at www.ahridirectory.org under the classification “Air Conditioners”. To find a specific match up, go to the selection of the outdoor unit of your choice and the use “Unico System” as your indoor coil. You can also use “SDHV” as a category to get a broader list of matchups

Slide 21 Unico Presentation We are a pre-designed, pre-

engineered system from the return air to the supply outlets, from one to five tons. This picture shows the three sections that make up a Unico System: Return Air, Air Handler, Supply

Slide 22 Unico Presentation RETURN AIR

• No different from Conventional HVAC ECXEPT*:– Only 250 CFM per ton– Use .05” w.c. static pressure

*Refer to Unico Tech Note 106

As with all ducted systems, we need to “Breathe In” as well as “Breathe Out” , the only real differences with the Unico System are: • Only 250 cfm per ton is needed • The aspiration principle usually

eliminates the need for multiple return air ducts

Slide 23 Unico Presentation

Here is the Unico Return Air Section, we have, from left to right: An Adapter A Return Air Duct A Return Air Box and Filter

Slide 24 Unico Presentation Return air design

• Conventional air return• Typically ceiling for attic units• High for cooling/Low for heating• Usually at the top of a stairway

The Unico System return duct system is a conventional duct system, only smaller because the system uses less air. Typically, this return register is mounted in the ceiling of a central hall near the unit when the unit is mounted in the attic. Multiple returns should be used when conditioning two or more spaces that do not communicate with each other. Avoid creating a negative pressure zone near gas fired equipment. It is best to position the return high, near the ceiling, for cooling systems and low, near the floor for heating systems. When heating and cooling use two

Page 12: The Unico System Training Catalogue - Capco Supply€¦ · The Unico System ® The Unico System ® Training Catalogue Outlets are available in styles and finishes to match any décor

returns, one high and one low. If you can only use one position it for the most important season. An open stairwell behaves like a chimney. Hot air will rise between floors so the heating load for the first floor will be higher than expected from a typical load calculation. As with supply outlets the return air grill placement should be discussed with the client.

Slide 25 Unico Presentation Typical Return

Stairwell acts like a chimney in the summer months, the hole that we cut for our return air box is also the size of most of our air handlers, making the installation easier

Slide 26 Unico Presentation

“Q” Bands Included”

Conventional disposable filter is standard with the return air box, but any third-party filter will work, provided that the static resistance at the rated air flow is less than .10” w.c. Remember, we only need to return 250 CFM per ton

Slide 22 Unico Presentation RETURN AIR

Slide 27 Unico PresentationCheck Resistance of Air Filter

No more than .10” w.c. pressure drop at rated CFM

Here is a manufacturer’s (Honeywell) rating of resistance in inches of water column at a given CFM. As you can see, since our three ton unit only needs 750 CFM, we are compatible with high MERV filters

Slide 28 Unico Presentation

Unico Can be used in conjunction with IAQ

Here we have an electronic air cleaner, a humidifier and a UV light bulb

We help you to sell IAQ, you can add third party filters, humidifiers and UV light bulbs. Be sure to have all of these on the RETURN air side. With humidifiers, do not use these where the air handler is in a conditioned space. Refer to our tech notes as to connecting Unico to specific humidifiers, such as power, steam, etc.

Slide 29 Unico Presentation Return Air Section

•Return Air Duct–Sound Attenuated–Flexible–Insulated: Mylar, Fibreglass with Spun-bond Nylon Core–Returns air to Air Handler–Attaches to Return Air Box fitting with large white plastic cable tie

Please be sure to use OUR return air duct if possible. It is especially from the same material that we use on our supply tubes to keep the system quiet. It is sold in a twelve foot length that can be easily compressed to have shorter runs.

Hot Water return Adapter

Cooling only return Adapter

Two types of return air adapter: • For Cooling Only applications, use

the self-tapping metal screws provided with the air handler

• For Hot water Coil and Multiple Return Air Boxes, use the adapter that uses suitcase latches to connect

Slide 31 Unico Presentation

Multiple Return Air

99% of Retrofit have only 1 return, However, multiple returns are okay

Almost all of our retrofit jobs have one return, as the aspiration concept is taking the role of the return air duct in keeping the air flow mixed. However, there are some codes that require more returns, such as each floor or each room is required to have a separate return. Be sure to follow ACCA Manual “D” recommendations

Slide 32 Unico Presentation

• Types of Blowers– Can be one of two styles of motors– PSC (Standard)– EC (Variable Speed)

Slide 52 Unico Presentation ECM … PSC

Side by side comparison of the old PSC motor (on right) with the new ECM. Silver item at the bottom is the controller, these are very sensitive to high heat, therefore don’t use a hot water coil with entering water temperature of greater than 150 degrees

Slide 53 Unico Presentation For checking the standard single

speed blower motor. Make sure it reads “True RMS” and can read to .001 amps, just clamp to one of the motor leads and record the amp reading. If it is too high, then you can adjust the CFM with the restrictor plate (included in blower)

Page 22: The Unico System Training Catalogue - Capco Supply€¦ · The Unico System ® The Unico System ® Training Catalogue Outlets are available in styles and finishes to match any décor

Slide 54 Unico Presentation Blower Specs

Amps = Cfm, this label is provided for your convenience on all standard single speed blowers

Slide 55 Unico Presentation The restrictor plate can be used to

adjust the airflow of the standard single speed blower module. Use this to try to make the amp draw as close as the aforementioned label recommends. If you still can’t get the proper amp draw with the restrictor plate wide open, you are probably short of outlets

Slide 56 Unico Presentation EC Blower

• SCB Board

The control board for the Variable Speed (EC) motor. One control board is used for all five sizes of blowers. There is a USB port included in the control board for an optional connection of a PC based computer

Page 23: The Unico System Training Catalogue - Capco Supply€¦ · The Unico System ® The Unico System ® Training Catalogue Outlets are available in styles and finishes to match any décor

Slide 57 Unico Presentation How does it work?

• Uses the Emerson (NIDEC) EC motor, a very common industry motor, the M055 Series

• Controller can be ordered separately• The controller for the motor is specific for the designs of the

Unico system.• Sets a constant CFM by adjusting the RPM to conform with the

Unico System fan curve

Slide 58 Unico Presentation Fan Curve

• Uses up to 45% less energy• Much slower RPM• Air Handler Much Quieter• In the following Slide we have

– 1250 CFM at 1400 RPM (MAX)– 488 watts of power consumption– See additional speeds for Stage 1 and Fan

Slide 59 Unico Presentation Blower Curve

• 1. 1250 cfm 1.2” w.c. 488 watts (Y2)• 2. 625 cfm 1.2” w.c. 210 watts (G)• 3. 700 cfm 1.2” w.c. 280 watts (Y1)

EC motors use about half of the energy of a PSC (or standard) blower module. Because of this more manufacturers are switching away from PSC to EC. As you can see, our largest blower module uses about half the energy of a coffee maker

Page 24: The Unico System Training Catalogue - Capco Supply€¦ · The Unico System ® The Unico System ® Training Catalogue Outlets are available in styles and finishes to match any décor

Slide 61 Unico Presentation

Multiple Wiring ConfigurationsThere are multiple easy to follow wiring configurations depending on your equipment and requirements. They are located in Bulletin 30-39

Slide 62 Unico Presentation The same solid state control board is

used on all Variable Speed motors. Wiring is point-to-point for ease of use. The board is protected with a 2 amp automotive fuse (a spare fuse is also included with the board)

is made: • Prepare the plenum and insulate• Cut an “X” shaped pattern where

you want to make the take-off• Place the smaller gasket on the

bottom of the take-off• Drill a 2" hole• Use four self-tapping metal screws

to connect the take-off to the plenum.

• Place the thermal overlay gasket on top of the fitting

• Place a tape ring on top of the assembly

• Connect the supply tubing with the appropriate clamp

Aluminium Supply Tubing

–UPC-25-4–25’ in Length–4 Lengths per box–Unico System PatentedProduct–Used for ExtendedLengths–Black clamp rings only

The aluminum tubing is very rugged and is like a chimney liner. The point to remember is that you MUST have at least three (3) feet of sound attenuating tubing at the end of the aluminum core tubing run or the system will be noisy

Slide 92 Unico Presentation

NO Acoustical Properties

Must have three feet of Sound Attenuator Tubing

Used for longer runs. NO noise abatement so 3 feet is required for ending section

Slide 93 Unico Presentation Supply Duct

• Have greater than a five inch radius• Try to make supply duct end like a “Question Mark”• Too tight a bend causes noise

Slide 94 Unico Presentation Two and ½ “ Duct

• Available in– Aluminum Core– Sound Attenuating Tubing– R4, R6, and R8 Insulation Values

Both styles of tubing are available in insulation ranging from the standard R3.3 to as high as R8. Use of higher “R” values is dependent upon the local code. Of course, higher R values will mean a larger O.D. on the supply R3.3 is about 3 ½” and R8 is about 6” O.D.

Slide 95 Unico Presentation Why 2 ½” Duct?

• Fewer Outlets Needed• Average 45 cfm per outlet, five per ton• Saves Time as a result• Same sound level as two inch, but more airflow• Uses a new threaded outlet (left hand thread)

2 ½” I.D. Duct is also available, it requires fewer outlets, as you have the same sound level with 45 CFM with these as opposed to 35 CFM with 2” outlets.

Slide 96 Unico Presentation New Screw-In Outlet

Slide 108 Unico Presentation

Our Fire Rated Outlet (part number UPC56FR) is a UL-555 rated device that will seal off the opening if the air handler reaches above a certain temperature, closing off any smoke. These are only available for two inch duct. Many commercial buildings will require these to meet code

A slotted outlet is perfect for high side wall applications, where we would have less than five inches radius. They can also be used for floor and ceiling applications. We make these in the 90 degree slot as shown here and in a straight in slot. Attractive to the homeowner and the installing contractor, looks and value

Also available in straight in slot

The Rules of Unico

A Brief Overview

Here we will give you the basics of designing and installing a Unico System

Slide 114 Unico Presentation

How to Design a Unico System

Page 43: The Unico System Training Catalogue - Capco Supply€¦ · The Unico System ® The Unico System ® Training Catalogue Outlets are available in styles and finishes to match any décor

Slide 115 Unico Presentation Introduction

• This consists of two parts:– Load Calculation: Determining the proper amount of energy for

heating and cooling– Duct Layout: How to properly size and install the Unico Small Duct

High Velocity System

There are two parts to a design and layout • The Load required• The layout and installation of the

Unico System

Slide 116 Unico Presentation Load Analysis

• LOAD ANALYSIS• Quick Sizer (Unico Bulletin 40-20)• This makes a number of assumptions• ASHRAE Manual J

– Very detailed, beyond the scope of this class

Slide 117 Unico Presentation Outlets in a Room

• If we have 200 c.f.m per ton, then each outlet will have anywhere from 20-35 c.f.m

• Each outlet will be about 2000 btus cooling* and 4000 btus ofheating

• Outlets can be anywhere it doesn’t blow directly on someone or cause something to move

• * In reality closer to 1500-1700 btus

Detailed load calculations are beyond the scope of our training. We assume that everyone uses industry standards, such as ASHRAE Manual J. We use the Wrightsoft load calculation program, but there are many other companies that will do load calculations. Of course, as with any program, the output is only as good as the information that goes into it

Self-explanatory

Slide 118 Unico PresentationRules of Unico to Remember

Slide 119 Unico Presentation Airflow

• Airflow • Airflow• Airflow

Can’t emphasize the importance of the airflow to the Unico System. 95% of all problems relate to a lack of airflow

Slide 120 Unico Presentation Not Equal Friction

This is what most think of for Warm Air Systems

Conventional designs for warm air systems are very complicated. A lot of calculations need to be made in order to be sure there is the proper airflow at the furthest register. Normally, we start off with .6” w.c. at most and then use either equal velocity or equal friction to determine the sizes of our trunks. A mistake here will result in poor airflow in the house

Page 45: The Unico System Training Catalogue - Capco Supply€¦ · The Unico System ® The Unico System ® Training Catalogue Outlets are available in styles and finishes to match any décor

Slide 121 Unico PresentationUnico System Uses Static Regain

An Example of Static Regain

This is the idea that the Unico System uses: Static Regain. When the system starts up the air flows to the end cap and pressurizes the system, much like a garden sprinkler. In both cases the amount of airflow at the furthest outlet from the air handler will have approximately the same outlet as the outlet closest to the air handler. Of course, there is friction loss in the plenum, but it is minimal

Slide 122 Unico Presentation Plenum Sizing

• Think of– Small (7”)– Medium (9”)– Large (10”)

• Remember these are MINIMUMS

This can also be checked by using a “Ductulator” such as those supplied by companies like Hart and Cooley. We are going to figure 200-250 cfm/ton at 1.2” w.c. If needed we can always go one size larger

Slide 123 Unico Presentation Static Pressure

• Anywhere up to 1.5” w.c. is acceptable• This will vary when we have less restriction• Today’s system is very unusual as it has only six foot runs of

two inch tubing, therefore the static readings will be a little less than usual

• Only returns that have OVER .15” w.c. need to be included intotal static pressure

This is for our “Hands On” class, where we install a system with a minimum of plenum and fittings, usually 15’ of plenum and one bull-head tee.

Page 46: The Unico System Training Catalogue - Capco Supply€¦ · The Unico System ® The Unico System ® Training Catalogue Outlets are available in styles and finishes to match any décor

Slide 124 Unico Presentation Plenum Sizing

Diameter Max CFM Typical Model

7” 700 1218 or 2430

9” 1000 3642

10* 1300 4860

*Required for M4860

This is a table using a duct calculator to determine the MINIMUM plenum size in round pipe for each system

Slide 125 Unico Presentation 60/40 Rule

• Split 50/50, no more than 60/40• Applies to all tees

If you have a tee in the system split the flow as close to 50/50 as possible, no more than 60% of the air flow on either side of the tee. This rule is true for every tee in the system although it is most important for the first tee. Q: Assuming that we are using 20 Fully Rate Outlets. What is the max on each side of the tee and of those tees?

A: 12 on one side

Slide 126 Unico Presentation 70/30 RULE

• No more than 30% of CFM on side branch

Turn a tee 90 degrees and you have a side branch (do not use the turning vane). The side branch can have no more than 30% of the total CFM.

Page 47: The Unico System Training Catalogue - Capco Supply€¦ · The Unico System ® The Unico System ® Training Catalogue Outlets are available in styles and finishes to match any décor

Slide 127 Unico Presentation Different Plenum Layouts

Many designs are available for plenums, for more information see our Bulletin 30-01, also, think of these as being in 3 dimensions, so the “H” pattern could come from a basement, tee off at each floor level

Slide 128 Unico Presentation

1/14/2016 Unico System 128

The best layout of all. Now pressures are equal throughout the system. It doesn’t matter how many outlets you have on either side of a bull-head tee. Also when calculating Equivalent Length (EL) you do not count the two elbows and the plenum run between them

Slide 129 Unico Presentation

Space Takeoffs evenly

Maintain spacing between takeoffs as evenly as possible. Minimum 6 inches between takeoffs and 12 inches from end cap.

Page 48: The Unico System Training Catalogue - Capco Supply€¦ · The Unico System ® The Unico System ® Training Catalogue Outlets are available in styles and finishes to match any décor

Slide 130 Unico Presentation 24 Inch Rule

You must be a minimum of 24 inches from the exit of the blower before any fitting or take off. Failure to do so will result in turbulence and noisy outlets

Slide 131 Unico Presentation

Space Takeoffs evenly

Maintain spacing between takeoffs as evenly as possible. Minimum 6 inches between takeoffs and 12 inches from end cap.

Slide 132 Unico Presentation

For Every 5 feet Over 10You Lose 10% of Capacity

25 ft.. run is 70% of an outlet24.5 CFM of air

We have a “FULL” outlet at twelve (12) feet of supply tubing, either with 2” or 2 ½” duct. As the runs lengthen, there is less air delivered due to friction losses. For example a 2” supply duct at twelve feet delivers 33 CFM (based upon 1 ½” static pressure), if we increase this to thirty feet we only deliver 20 CFM or 60% of an outlet. This is one of the biggest causes of failure is not enough “FULL” outlets. 2 ½” duct is more forgiving, but again, friction loss must be taken into account

Page 49: The Unico System Training Catalogue - Capco Supply€¦ · The Unico System ® The Unico System ® Training Catalogue Outlets are available in styles and finishes to match any décor

Unico Commissioning Sheet

At the end of every job, it is a good habit to run a commissioning report. It takes a picture of how the Unico System was working when you left the job. If you are working with a General Contractor, have him sign off on this, if there are any changes made without your knowledge you are covered

Slide 134 Unico Presentation The first part of commissioning is

similar to the information that we need to register a job for warranty: Name, address, contact information and model and serial numbers

Slide 135 Unico Presentation The next section deals with the airflow

output of the blower module and the refrigerant system. The airflow at the motor is easily determined by: Checking the amp draw on the single speed motors and comparing it with the label Counting the flashes of the PCB LED at the control board Check refrigerant pressures with compound gauges. Check the charge by using the superheat that the outside unit manufacturer recommends.

Page 50: The Unico System Training Catalogue - Capco Supply€¦ · The Unico System ® The Unico System ® Training Catalogue Outlets are available in styles and finishes to match any décor

Be careful of more than a 27 degree delta tee, as this would indicate low airflow

Slide 136 Unico Presentation The second page of the commissioning

sheet shows the output of each outlet. To measure this use the Turbometer to record wind speed in knots. Take this number and double it to get your CFM (for 2 ½” duct you need to multiply the knots times 2.37). This will show precisely how the system is performing

Slide 137 Unico Presentation Thank you for taking this class! Think

about using the Unico System for your next HVAC project
