Yass Valley is one of the fastest growing regional centres in NSW and with growth comes the requirement for long-term strategic planning on where development should occur and when land should be released for development. To assist with this process Yass Valley Council has engaged consultants to prepare a draft Yass Valley Settlement Strategy which is currently on exhibition for public comment.

“This draft strategy seeks to stimulate a conversation with the community about where growth should go,” said Council’s Director of Planning & Environment, Chris Berry. “Council regularly receives enquiries from landowners ‘speculating’ on potential urban development of their land – some of which are located adjacent to the NSW-ACT border. We need a strong strategy in place to make it clear where growth can go, so that we can plan for the most cost effective delivery of services and infrastructure.”

Members of the community can have input in to this process by completing a short survey on the draft Strategy: www.surveymonkey.com/r/9CZCNSS or by providing written comments to the documentation currently on public exhibition. The exhibition period for these documents started on 13th January 2017 and will end at 5:00pm on Monday, 13th March 2017 - www.yassvalley.nsw.gov.au/council/exhibition

As part of the 2017 Seniors Week celebrations Yass Valley Council is hosting a Volunteer Festival on Saturday 11th March at the Yass Community Centre, 10:00am-2:00pm.

The free event will allow groups and organisations that rely on volunteers to showcase their organisation to members of the public.

“The Volunteer Festival is a new initiative that will provide people that want to volunteer in Yass Valley with easy access to a range of information about volunteering opportunities,” said Cathy Campbell, Council’s Community Development Manager.

Over 17 volunteer based community groups and organisations have registered their intention to attend the event including Wildcare, Yass Community Garden, Yass State Emergency Service, Yass CanAssist and the Murrumbateman Field Days.

NEW STATE GOVERNMENT EMERGENCY SERVICES PROPERTY LEVYThe NSW State Government is currently investigating the introduction of a new Emergency Services Property Levy, which will be collected by local councils. Details about this Levy, how it will be charged or calculated have not been brought before Parliament so this information is to make residents aware in advance of any decision being made.

The new Levy will replace the Emergency Services Levy that is currently collected as part of all property-based insurance policies. If introduced, all councils across NSW will be required to collect the Levy on behalf of the State Government. If the new Levy goes ahead it will be included on rate notices as a separate line item, however ratepayers need to be aware that Council is simply the collection agency, with all funds forwarded to the State Government.

The NSW Government is stating that the purpose of the Levy is to ensure all ratepayers contribute to the cost of our emergency services. The Levy seeks to remove the cost from the insurance industry, bringing NSW in line with other states.

For further information, please visit: www.emergencyservicespropertylevy.nsw.gov.au

Community organisations wishing to reserve a table can do so by contacting Lynette Baker - 6226 4555 or [email protected] up until Wednesday 8th March.

UNSEALED ROADS GRADING PROGRAM March & April 2017A long, hot summer has assisted our maintenance grading teams with trying to catch up with the damage caused to our unsealed road network during our record wet winter. There are still a lot of kilometers to be graded but the dry weather has enabled us to put together a grading program for the next couple of months. Should residents identify a particular problem or are concerned about significant deterioration of a road, please contact us on 02 6226 1477 and we will arrange for an inspection.

Many will know Peter Doyle through Doyle’s Pharmacy, a family run business which operated in Yass for over 40 years but to many others Peter has played a crucial role in shaping the very region we live in today. Peter was a Yass Valley Councillor for 14 years and has contributed his expertise in aged or frail care by volunteering on numerous committees and causes, including 10 years as President of the Yass Aged Care Foundation.

“It is a wonderful acknowledgement from your community to be recognised for an Australia Day Award and on behalf of Yass Valley I would like to congratulate our outstanding winners on this fabulous achievement,” said Yass Valley Mayor, Rowena Abbey. “These awards are about recognising everyday people who do amazing things and without people like this our community wouldn’t be what it is today.”

Gundaroo & Sutton MASTER PLANS

Council engaged Consultants to prepare Masterplans for Gundaroo and Sutton to provide greater certainty and structure for the future of the villages. Two workshops were held with the Gundaroo community in 2016. It is intended that once finalised, the Masterplans will form part of a comprehensive Development Control Plan prior to any subdivision taking place.

The draft outlines guidelines for future development, as well as other complementary works such as linkages and landscaping within the existing village.

The exhibition period for these documents started on 13th January 2017 and will end at 5:00pm on Monday, 13th March 2017. www.yassvalley.nsw.gov.au/gundaroo-sutton-master-plans
