June 2018 Design Review Council CornerHappy Summer!

The second annual clean-up is scheduled for June 18th and 19th - Roll off dumpsters (available only to Meridian Ranch residents) will be located in two sections of the community. Lambert Road, next to the high school, and Rex Road. Please check out the website for a list of what CAN and CANNOT be thrown away. In the May newsletter, there was an article about PLOGGING - picking up trash while jogging or walking the trails as an excellent way to exercise. Let’s all work together to keep the Meridian Ranch Community a beautiful place to live!

The summer months brings open windows, the smell of fresh flowers, the chitter chatter of the birds, and the laughter of children. What we don’t want is to hear is barking dogs, or smell unkempt yards filled with dog debris. Please be a good neighbor! Excessive barking from dogs is considered a “nuisance”. Please do your part in keeping your neighborhood a quiet and peaceful place.

Article III, Section 3.5 of the Declaration prohibits any activity which becomes a nuisance or causes an unreasonable embarrassment, disturbance, or annoyance to others. This activity may include, but is not limited to, sounds or odors that emanate from any property.

Manager’s Message for June 2018Water is essential to life. You can’t start your day in the morning without using our safe, reliable, public water supply and sanitary sewer system. During May, professionals celebrated Public Works Week and National Water Week. We invite you to consider the significance of our water and sewer systems. In the early 1900s, the average life span in the United States was in the mid-40s. Now, it is in the late 70s. Safe drinking water and sanitary sewer systems are a significant contributor to this change in longevity. We now take for granted that water borne diseases like typhoid and cholera are no longer an everyday concern.

The Meridian Ranch community gets its water from wells (groundwater). There are 11 on-site and 6 off-site wells serving the community. These wells are as deep as 2,600 feet and as shallow as 150 feet. About 100,000 feet of water pipes, several booster pumps, and over 4,000,000 gallons of storage are used to deliver water to our customers.

The quality of our water is tested regularly to assure compliance with the federal Safe Drinking Water Act. The District posts on our website (www.meridianranchmetro.org) our annual Consumer Confidence Reports with detailed information about water quality testing and how our water compares to government standards. We consistently meet all water quality standards.

The Meridian Service Metropolitan District is committed to providing you with safe, dependable, and affordable drinking water and sanitary sewer service. Celebrate our success with us and do your part to protect our water sources by practicing water conservation and avoiding water pollution.

What if hardest day of your life was also your first? This is true for the thou-sands of babies every day who are born too soon or very sick. In newborn intensive care unit (NICUs) across the country, they struggle to survive.

For mom and dad, having their baby hospitalized in the NICU can be fright-ening, confusing and overwhelming. Babies shouldn’t have to fight for their

lives. But, with your help, we can provide comfort to families in crisis.

Proceeds from this year’s Falcon Freedom Days will go to the expansion of the Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Francis Medical Center. They specialize in providing high-level care to premature babies and babies with severe medical problems. The NICU has private neonatal bays where

parents can spend private family time with their baby. Specially trained nurses maintain round-the-clock care and observation of patients.

You can make donations at the event or visit the Antler Creek Golf Course Pro Shop, Meridian Service Metro District office or the Rec Center. For a great video

highlighting the challenges these babies face, visit our Falcon Freedom Days 2018 event page on Facebook@MeridianRanchCO.

Let’s Keep It Clean! It’s difficult to follow rules that you are unaware of, and while everyone gets a copy of The Declarations of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions, not everyone is “in the know” regarding trash totes.

Everyone can agree that trash is not pleasant to look at, so it is important to minimize the visual impact it has on the community by following a few simple rules.

What are the rules about trash?

3.10 Restrictions on Garbage and Trash.

No refuse, garbage, trash, lumber, grass, shrub, tree clippings, plant waste, compost, metal, bulk materials, scrap or debris of any kind shall be kept, stored, or allowed to accumulate on any Lot except within an enclosed structure or appropriately screened from view, except that any container containing such materials may be placed outside at such times as may be necessary to permit garbage or trash pick up. Burning of trash is prohibited.

So in short:

1. You can put your trash out the night before pick-up (Only until the evening of pick-up).

2. Rocky Mountain Disposal allows 2 extra bags of trash per collection.

3. Your totes need to be screened from view all other times in your garage or within a trash screening structure. If your totes are just pulled up the driveway or beside your home, your trash would not be appropriately screened.

Well, that’s simple! Everyone can do that!

Foundations for future education experiences have been set at Falcon High School. Progress is happening at a momentous pace. Foundations have been poured, exterior walls are in place, trusses have been placed, and windows are going in. The new addition will allow students to enrich on the portfolio of course opportunities through new classrooms, technologically advanced computer labs, and a maker space to spark creative innovation and design. Principles of Engineering students in the FHS Engineering program have been studying trusses during their unit on structures. Through the support GE Johnson, students were able to tour the progress on the new academic wing and view the various engineering structures first hand. Educators will be able to lead future graduates within the new space beginning in August 2018!

Summer Safety Tips from the Falcon Fire Protection District

The days are growing longer and summer will officially arrive this month. Here are some quick safety tips to ensure your summer fun isn’t ruined by needless injuries.

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Humidity is lower at higher elevations, and the body loses fluids through breathing and sweating. Dehydration can lead to fatigue and lightheadedness. It can also contribute to heat illnesses (heat exhaustion, heat stroke) and altitude sickness. Make sure you and your family are drinking enough water, especially during outdoor activities!

2. Wear helmets when bicycling. The National Safety Council estimates that cyclists who wear helmets reduce their risk of head injury by 60% and brain injury by 58%. Helmets are a good idea for skateboarders and horseback riders, too.

3. Be safe around water to avoid drowning. Supervise children at all times when near ponds, lakes, pools, and spas. Use flotation devices while on boats. Don’t enter water unless you know how to swim. More water safety tips from the National Safety Council can be found here: www.nsc.org/home-safety/tools-resources/seasonal-safety/drowning

4. Heed fire restrictions and bans wherever you go. Local authorities may enact fire restrictions and bans at any time due to fire danger. For an explanation of what is and is not allowed under Stage 1 and Stage 2 Fire Restrictions issued by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, go to our website (www.falconfirepd.org) and click on “Fire Danger & Bans” at the upper right. (Please note: The Falcon Fire Protection District does not issue, suspend, or lift countywide Stage 1 or 2 Fire Restrictions, nor does it issue Red Flag Warnings.)

To learn more about current fire restrictions in place around the state, go to: https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/dfpc/fire-bans-and-restrictions

The members of the Falcon Fire protection District hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer!
