Dear Friends and Fellow Residents,Happy October! This time of year is so exciting, isn’t it? Halloween is right around the corner, which means that Thanksgiving and Christmas are soon to follow! My kids plan for Halloween all month long, looking for costume ideas on the internet and thinking up great party ideas. They also like to tell scary stories in anticipation for the big night! We always trick-or-treat right here in Meridian Ranch. It’s so much fun to go to each door and visit with our neighbors. Some of our residents really get into decorating, too! October always makes me long for fresh baked apple pie and cider, too! Is there any better time of the year for backyard fi re pits? The cool evenings make me want to snuggle up by a fi re and chat with my friends, while the kids run around or roast marshmallows! What does your family do during Autumn? Do you have special traditions for the holiday season? We’d love to hear from you! Please feel free to send your ideas and pictures to [email protected]!

Falcon High School

The Falcons football team played a season opener August 29 at Falcon High School in District 49. During their opening game on a new field, the Falcons lost in overtime, 28-34, to the Eagles of Pine Creek High School in Academy School District 20, a defending Class 4A state champion. The Falcon Community of Builders for Classrooms donated $500,000 this summer for the artificial turf installation project, according to Terry Schooler of FCBC. He called the new field “state-of-the-art,” while explaining its cushioning and durability. By transitioning to artificial turf, the high school avoids maintenance costs, including watering, fertilizing and mowing. Over the past five years, the area community of builders has contributed $5 million for capital improvement projects in District 49.

GED Prep Program Helping to Boost Earnings Potential

Falcons Open Season on New Field, Defeated in Overtime

Hillary Dennis of Peyton studies mathematics during a GED prep class Feb. 18 at Patriot Learning Center in Falcon School District 49. Dennis, 52, moved from Jamaica in 2011, bringing a promise to herself that she'd earn a high school equivalency diploma. Her son is a radiologist and her oldest daughter is a fashion designer and massage therapist. Inspired by her children's continued education, Dennis says completing her GED will improve her access to higher paying jobs. The testing requirements transitioned this year, covering four content areas: reasoning through language arts, mathematical reasoning, science and social studies. Kathy McCullohs, GED prep teacher, says the tests, now administered exclusively on computers, are aligning with new rigorous state standards and focusing on critical thinking and problem-solving skills for improved college and career readiness. Scores are generated within three hours, and are accompanied by detailed and personalized feedback. The school's prep classes take place every Tuesday and Thursday evening.

Cody Curtis Cody Curtis, 19, of Peyton was recognized Aug 13 as the inaugural recipient of the Falcon High School Excellence Scholarship at District 49’s central office. A local family, requesting to remain anonymous, is donating the funds through the Falcon Education Foundation. Curtis, who graduated in May, was known as a talented athlete and class leader. He’s now

preparing to continue his education at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas, where he’ll major in agriculture business. As the scholarship’s first recipient, and with a minimum 3.0 GPA, he’ll receive $10,000 per year in tuition assistance.“We’re financially fortunate and education in our family is very important,” said the philanthropist, a father of two recent Falcon High School graduates. “There are a lot of kids who can’t afford to continue with school. We want them to go and minimize their student loan needs.”Explaining a desire to remain connected to the school district, his wife said, “District 49 was just such a great place for our kids - District 49 had the most to offer.”

MRES First Graders Get Down To Action

"Yes, they are action words!" Mrs. Catron, fi rst-grade teacher at Meridian Ranch Elementary School, responded to Adrian Acevedo's descrip-tion of a verb on the third day of school. The vibrant classroom was fi lled with students acting out verbs they identifi ed in sentences and shared stories of their summer activities focusing on the use of verbs. Jordin Briggs said, "Because it helps us read," when asked why the class was learning to sound out and use words. The class also spent some of Monday morning, August 4,learning classroom celebrations that will be used through he year to celebrate individual accomplishments as well as class achievements. Celebrations ranged from the rollercoaster and the trucker to fi reworks.

As cooler weather approaches, the school wants you to be aware of a few weather-related things. Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately. We will go outside unless it is under 19 degrees. We do not provide supervision for students in alternate locations. We rely on you --the parent and guardians --to make sure that your child comes prepared with warm clothes for the day's potential weather. Be aware that we will often have the same closure and delay information as D49, but it is not always exactly

the same. Please look for information about PPSEL rather than D49. The most likely way we will be different than D49 is Fridays. When D49 has a weather delay on a Friday, PPSEL will call a closure because students wouldn't be here long enough to make the day worthwhile because of our shortened Fridays.

Even safer than riding in your own vehicle, riding on a school bus is the safest way for your child to travel to and from school. The greatest risk is not riding the school bus, but approaching or leaving it, so children need to be especially careful around the school bus “danger zone,” which is the 10 feet in front, behind andon each side of the school bus.

What Children Should Be Taught About School Bus Safety

Tips for children:• Wait until the driver says it is safe to board. Then get on one at a time.• Once you’re off the school bus, walk fi ve giant steps from the front of the bus, cross in front of the bus when the driver indicates it is safe, stop at the edge of the bus – look left-right-left again for traffi c, and if there’s no traffi c, cross the street.• Ask the driver for help if you drop something while getting on or off the school bus.• Keep your loose items inside your backpack or book bag.• Once on the school bus, go directly to your seat and sit down facing forward. Remain in your seat facing forward when the school bus is moving.• Be respectful of the school bus driver, and always obey his or her instructions.Tips for Parents:• If your children ride the school bus, walk with them to the bus stop and wait with them until they get on the school bus.• Tell children to use the handrails when they get on and off the school bus, and be careful of drawstrings and book bag straps that could get caught in the handrails and doors.• When driving in neighborhoods and school zones, watch out for young people who may be distracted and not thinking about safety.• Slow down. Watch for children playing and congregating near school bus stops.• Be alert. Children arriving late for the school bus may dart into the street without looking for traffi c.

Every one loves a good scare on Halloween, but not when it comes to our children’s safety. There are several easy and effective behaviors that parents can share with kids to reduce the risk of injury. COSTUME TIPS:Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame. Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and Trick-or-Treat bags for greater visibility. When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories, look for and purchase those with a label clearly indicating they are flame resistant. Masks can sometimes obstruct a child’s vision. Try non-toxic face paint and makeup whenever possible. Hats should fit properly to prevent them from sliding over eyes. If a sword, cane, or stick is a part of your child's costume, make sure it is not sharp or too long. These accessories may easily hurt children if they stumble or trip.PUMPKIN TIME:Small children should never carve pumpkins. Children can draw a face with markers. Then parents can do the cutting. Keep candle-lit jack o’lanterns away from doorsteps, walkways, landings, and curtains. Place them on sturdy tables, keep them out of the reach of pets and small children, and never leave them unattended. Consider using a flashlight or glow stick instead of a candle to light your pumpkin. If you do use a candle, a votive candle is safest.

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

• Don’t eat candy until it has been inspected at home. Tell children not to accept—or eat—anything that isn’t commercially wrapped. Inspect commercially wrapped treats for signs of tampering, such as an unusual ap-pearance or discoloration, tiny pinholes, or tears in wrappers. Throw away anything that looks suspicious.

• Parents of very young children should remove any choking hazards such as gum, peanuts, hard candies, or small toys.

TRICK-or-TREATERS:To keep homes safe for visiting trick-or-treaters, parents should remove from the porch and front yard anything a child could trip over such as hoses, toys, bikes and lawn decorations. Wet leaves or snow should be swept from sidewalks and steps. Parents should check outdoor lights and replace burned-out bulbs. Restrain pets so they do not inadvertently jump on or bite a trick-or-treater. Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, they should stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups. Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours. Have kids use glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers. A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds. If your older children are going alone, plan and review the route that is ac-ceptable to you. Agree on a specific time when they should return home.Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk. If no sidewalk is available, walk at the far edge of the roadway facing traffic.

SAFE TREATS: If you’re trick-or-treating you should remember these tips:

Never cut across yards or use alleys. Only cross the street in established crosswalks. Never cross between parked cars or driveways. Only go to homes with a porch light on and NEVER ENTER A HOME OR CAR FOR A TREAT.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Fall is the time to prepare for winter—cold and wet conditions not only make you miserable, but they can damage your home. Some winterizing can wait, some can’t. Make a list of what needs to be done, and tackle the time-sensitive tasks fi rst. Here is a simple checklist to help you get a jump on winter:

Are You Ready for Cold Weather?

Indoor Winterizing• Examine doors and replace weather-stripping as needed.• Examine window caulking and reseal where needed.• Examine and repair vents where needed.• Clean chimneys and fl ues.• Remove items near heat vents.• Place non-skid runners or door mats outside to help keep water, sand

and salt out of the house.Outdoor Winterizing• Cut back tree branches and shrubs that hide signs or block light.• Examine outdoor handrails and tighten if needed.• Turn off electrical breakers for outdoor equipment.• Close hose bibs.• Clean out gutters and downspouts.• Clear yard drains.• Spray outdoor locks and hinges with lubricant.• Stake driveway and walkway edges that may be diffi cult to fi nd under

deep snow.Assemble, stockpile or refresh winter supplies:• Batteries• Candles and matches• Ice melt and de-icer• Sand• Snow shovels• Generator fuel

Do you write essays or poems? Do you have strong feelings on a social issue? Draw pictures? We want to hear your voices! Please submit your writing and artistic work to [email protected] by the 20th of each month.

If your child says that he or she finds the homework assign-ments too difficult, you should plan on helping out. But it is not a good idea to do most of the problems or assignment. One or two examples should suffice, along with any additional expla-nations needed. This will not only provide assistance, but will allow your child to learn to complete the work independently.Be realistic about how much your child can handle in his or her daily life. If the pressures of outside activities, like sports, dance, or music is too much, homework time will become frustrating and unproductive. A child may be too stressed, tired, or overwhelmed to effectively complete the assign-ments. Take a good look at how much your child can handle and reduce activities if needed. Evaluate how you approach homework time as well. If you feel stressed or constantly irritated, you may need some outside help. Hiring a tutor to assist your child a few times a week may be all you need to turn things around. This can reduce negative feelings from both the parent and the child and can lead to improvements in completing assignments. Finally, don’t forget to review your child’s work. If you simply allow your child to complete each assignment without look-ing it over, there may be mistakes or concepts that your child hasn’t grasped. If you review the work daily, you will be able to see if your child needs more help in any specific areas. Don’t correct any mistakes yourself, but use this as an opportunity to review concepts and emphasize good study habits.

Homework can develop into a daily struggle between children and par-ents. Unfortunately, in many house-holds, homework time consists of nagging and complaining, with little getting accomplished. To help your child successfully navigate homework time, keep these tips in mind.

Calling Meridian Ranch Youth

Helping Children With Homework

Make homework time a priority and keep it consistent each day. It is a good idea for parents and children to decide on a time together, to make this work for everyone in the family. All homework should be completed during this time. If your child finishes homework before the time is up, the rest of the period can be allotted for quiet reading time. By doing this, both you and your child know what is expected and can place the appropriate emphasis on completing all the homework, without the distractions of other activities or television.

A Light Meadow Breezeby Josh Caffee

A light meadow breezeThe sound of Honeybees

It puts us at ease,we are displeased.

Watching the world through our shieldsSaying that we will never yield,

A breeze through a field,a pen we now can only wield.

We take no action, throw no stone,to take them down from their thrones.

Like a weed in the grass, they’re overgrown.

And only now have they been shownwho they really are.

Practitioners of the politically correct judgements, they build us on fake abutments.

And now we fall.

And there is no stopping,we hear them chopping,

and our country is flopping,as they continue their loppingof the branches of our nation.

We continue our allegations, our attemted publications,of their hideous violations.

But we have no more ground to stand,no more ways to make a demand.

We need to use our handsto defend our homeland.

And the riots will start.

Start with as much as a sneezeand they will begin to make their decrees,

no one left to make the pleas.

They took our light meadow breeze.

Fall Garden Tipsby Pam GradyAutumn is the time to clean out your garden and add mulch to your flower beds. I reccommend using Gorilla Mulch because it doesn’t blow around when our Falcon winds start to pick up!October and November are great months to plant your bulbs for next Spring. It’s also the perfect time to divide and move your plants to other areas. Consider planting trees in the Fall as well, they get a great start and will remain hardy throughtout the chilly winter months! Let’s enjoy this Fall weather!
