and care about the needs of
others, the beauty in others, the
pain of others, can we be lifted
from a routine existence and
into a life that is full of purpose
and joy. Christ must be first.
Then we really come alive.
This begins in the heart
and mind, but it must reach to
the very tips of your fingers
and toes! We are not talking
about just a morning devotion
here. It's time to take that
morning and become loving
persons of action! Loving
Christ first is a verb!
Ruts make driving tough.
You can't steer where you want to
go, it's like a pre-set path you
have to fight to get out. And even
then, those ruts can hang up your
car. We all fight ruts of one kind
or another.
Do you ever feel like one
day is just like the next, living the
same day, over and over again? In
the film, “Groundhog Day,” that
is just what happened. The main
character is full of himself. He
kept waking up to the same song
on the radio, day after day. He
met the same people at the same
spot each morning, and they said
the same lines to him at every
encounter. No matter what he did,
even if he got in trouble, the next
day would start the same. It was
Groundhog Day, day in and day
out. He existed, but wasn’t really
“living.” He was stuck in a rut!
We get in ruts too.
We look back on our lives
and we wonder where all the days
and months have gone. We
wonder how all the years have
slipped through our fingers like
sand. We begin to
think, “I have been
in a rut.” Could it be
that we have stopped
making memorable
moments because
we are comfortable
in our little rut? Have we stopped
exploring, discovering,
expanding and just became
comfortable in our rut-like
routines? Have we been just
existing and not really “living?”
A daily “routine” is a good thing,
but a good thing can go too far.
The routine is comfy, but maybe
too comfy? But is it really living
the way Christ would have us
live?
In the film, “Groundhog
Day,” the main character could
not break out of recycling
Groundhog Day until he
understood the meaning of life.
He had to stop being the most
important person in his life.
Through those repeating days he
slowly learned to see the needs
of others. Eventually he began to
see the sweetness in others. He
learned compassion,
unconditional love and genuine
care for others. He finally looked
past himself. His change began
in his heart, and moved to his
fingers and toes.
Only until he was no
longer number one could he go
on with the rest of his life.
It is the same with our ruts too.
Only until we put ourselves
aside, and put the love of Christ
in first place, can we really live
and climb out. Only until we see

leave the old behind and wake
up in newness of life and
conduct. Ruts are good for
mud, but not for the soul or
mind. With Christ's hand, up
and out of that rut we go, each
and every day.
You don't have to leave
home to show this kind of love
-into-action. Simply the way
we talk to our loved ones is
may be begging for a
makeover that will take all the
energy we have. How about
being the best mom or dad you
can be? Maybe we don't need
to lose that five pounds, but
lose five bad habits from our
comfortable rut, and Christ can
help. Spending time with our
children could be the alley to
their heart that needs repaving.
Leaving our ruts for higher
ground could be as close as an
apology we have been stalling
on, or sending a card to
someone, or dialing a number
to someone who is hurting.
Getting out of ourselves and
putting Christ first is not
complicated.
The only way out of a
rut is up, and Christ leads the
way making even today a
whole new day! Love as Christ
has loved you. It's already a
new day!
Recently a member of
the church said to me, “Pastor,
I want to start making some
meals for our shut-ins. How
can I go about doing that?”
Now there is a person who is
not in a rut! Christ is number
one in their lives, not
themselves, and their hands are
showing it. A few years ago a
new baker joined our flour
power team and wanted to
bake for a weekly soup and
breadline on Bodart Street. He
left his rut in the dust far
behind him. In each and every
life, yours and mine as well,
the living Savior is at work
within us. He is urging us to

Are you expecting a new addition or are you
already a new parent and plan to have your child
baptized at Our Saviour? All new or expectant
parents who desire their child to be baptized at
Our Saviour are asked to attend a pre-baptism
seminar with your child’s intended sponsors. Our
next meeting is on February 19, 2011 from
9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Please call 468-4065
to RSVP to attend this required meeting.

p.m. for worship.
We’re Lutheran! There will
be food!
Another change for this year: A
Lenten meal will be offered
from 5:00 p.m. to 6:25 p.m.
Various groups will be
sponsoring the meal. Offerings
collected for the meals will be
designated by the host group of
the week. If you are interested
in hosting a meal, please
contact Pastor Greg right away.
We do still have openings on
the schedule.
What about Confirmation
classes?
Confirmation classes will not
be held on Wednesdays during
Lent, but students will still be
gathering! Each student will be
required to participate in
Lenten worship on
Wednesdays. The students will
also be assisting with ushering,
reading and other service
opportunities during the season.
More information will be
shared with the confirmation
students very soon!
Bible studies too?
Jesus said, “Man shall not live
by bread alone, but by every
word that comes from the
mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4)
OSLC understands this!
During the dinner hour, you
can do both! The pastors will
be leading a class on the beliefs
of Lutheran Christians. A
second class called “Really Bad
Girls of the Bible” will be
offered at the same time. For
more information about this
study, please contact Stephenie
Hovland. Lent is a great time
for you to refresh and renew
your understanding of God’s
Word.
The season of Lent is
not that far away! Ash
Wednesday opens the season
on March 9, 2011. Easter is
April 24. The overall theme
for the Wednesday Lenten
sermons, “People of the
Passion,” highlights a number
of important people from the
events of the Passion of our
Lord. In doing so, we once
again are presented with the
story of God’s salvation during
Lent and Holy Week. The
Wednesday worship service
and sermon will be different
from Sunday’s service and
sermon. This gives you, the
disciple of Christ, two weekly
opportunities to grow in your
Christian faith during the
season of Lent.
The schedule has changed!
This year OSLC will be
observing Lent differently. All
our midweek services will be
held on Wednesdays. (Note:
No Thursday worship services
during Lent except for Maundy
Thursday.) The service times
have changed also. We gather
together at 4:00 p.m. and 6:30

When this was written,
most of Green Bay was hoarse
from cheering our hometown team
on to the NFC championship over
the Bears on January 23.
Now, Super Bowl Sunday,
February 6, is ahead of us (at least
as this is being written.) The city
is focused, at least most of the
city. Packer fans worldwide are
going to be spending the next
handful of days in high
anticipation, party planning and
imaginations of victory
celebrations. Some are deeply
“emotionally invested” in the
games while others couldn’t care
less. Most of us just lie
somewhere in the middle.
We are being given a gift
to be living during such a time of
fun and good sport. The goal
rallies us, sharpens us and welds
us together as a group. The recent
win and hopeful win does much
for morale.
Morale… The dictionary
describes this as, “the state of the
spirits of a person or group as
exhibited by confidence,
cheerfulness, discipline and
willingness to perform assigned
tasks.” By that definition, we can
see, the recent and impending win
raises our morale. And this
encouragement is nothing
compared to the victory and win
we have that lies deep within us in
what our Living Savior has won
for us!
The last half of the NFC
championship game against the
Bears had us wondering if the
victory was going to be awarded
to the Packers or not. The way the
Packers played in the last two
quarters was the opposite of the
steamroller they were in the first
half. Yet our team won. It may not
have been pretty, but we won.
Isn’t life is like that too? Life is
more like a wrestling match than a
dance, old poets tell us. Even the
life of the Christian will not be
easy. Events may tackle us, trip
us, temporarily have the ball, yet
in the end, we win. Period.
Remember this too: “I have said
these things to you, that in me you
may have peace. In the world you
will have tribulation. But take
heart; I have overcome the world.”
- Jesus. Now that is a win that
lasts!

It's called a "social on a shoestring." We keep it simple and light.
The first Sweet Monday of 2011 is Monday, February 7 at 7:30 (come any time after 7:00 p.m.) The
activities go from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The topic is “Decent proposals.” We'll talk about wedding pro-posals people have had, what our dream pro-posal would be, and
even job proposals, if you like. Single and married
ladies of all ages are welcome. You don't need to RSVP, bring anything, or dress up. All I ask is that you show up!
Questions? Ask Stephenie Hovland: stephhov @hotmail.com or 264-8317.
Sweet Monday is a fun evening where ladies can come to the parlor and just relax. This is something you can invite a non-church friend to without them feeling uncomfortable.
