Some of the eminent scientists in the field of photovoltaics were brought together to share their knowledge of the leading thin film photovoltaic materials CdTe and CIGS and the devices based on these materials. There was a separate technical session dedicated for TiO 2 and polymer-based devices, and the enthusiasm was very high among the participants. More than 80 participants from different countries attended the symposium, and presented 17 invited talks and more than 100 contributed presentations in the technical sessions. The poster sessions were filled with discussion and contact making, and the participants benefited with new ideas and collaboration opportunities aroused as a result of this meeting. We enjoyed organizing this meeting bringing many eminent PV researchers, professors and students to Cancun, one of the finest Caribbean beaches, to share their experience and knowl- edge with the participants. Most importantly, it helped us to make many new friends and strengthen our collabora- tions in PV research that made worthwhile organizing this symposium. From a large number of papers presented in the symposium, 46 papers were selected for the peer review process of the journal, and out of that 30 papers were accepted and included in this special issue. All the selected papers were refereed according to the policy and guidelines of Solar Energy Materials & Solar Cells. I am grateful to the reviewers for sparing their valuable time and the sincere efforts to maintain the quality of publications. I acknowl- edge the kind help and encouragement of Dr. Greg P. Smestad in bringing out this special issue and the efforts of the journal editorial staff at Elsevier. I am grateful to the Centro de Investigacio´ n en Energı´a-UNAM for the support provided in organizing the symposium and to the invited speakers and contributors to the technical sessions for making this symposium a memorable one.
