Things to do in New York: Statue of Liberty

The French people generously gifted the Statue of Liberty to the people of the United States as a symbol of the international friendship forged between the two countries during the American Revolution. However, Lady Liberty has come to mean much more than just friendship. Now she is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. Our hats are off to sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, who envisioned the statuesque lady, and to Richard Morris Hunt who fashioned the pedestal she is deservedly set upon. Like many inspired creations of beauty and meaning do, her completion took more time and money than anticipated. In fact, the Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, which was 10 years later than the Centennial celebration for which she was intended, but she was nonetheless worth the wait. There are many NYC Hotels to choose from in New York City including The Milford A Times Square Hotel. The Milford is located a block from NYCs Times Square and close to many NYC Activities, Manhattan City Tours, NYC Events and NYC Shopping, New York City Restaurants and NYC Landmarks including Empire State Building, Central Park, Madison Square Garden and many more NYC Sightseeing Landmarks.

In 1924, the Statue of Liberty was dedicated as a National Monument and went through a restoration for her centennial on July 4, 1986. Between 1886 and 1924, almost 14 million immigrants entered the U.S. through New York and looked to the Statue of Liberty as the sign that theyd arrived safely to the land of their dreams. While the original intention of the torch was to suggest enlightenment, to the millions of newcomers, it meant, welcome and has become a symbol of hope.Thousands of people visit the Statue of Liberty daily. To visit her, you have to purchase a ticket for the ferry to get to Liberty Island and the ticket is also good for full access to Ellis Island. While there is usually access to go inside the Statue and even to climb the stairs and look out her crown, starting in October 2011, the pedestal will undergo a yearlong renovation, so youll have to admire the Statue and the surrounding grounds from outside.Liberty Island Information:Liberty Island is open every day except December 25.

When planning, account for time to pass through security upon arrival.
