A series of slides which are meant to be the basis of a face to face conversation with owner-managers as they think about 2016.

It is based on the theory that your business changes when you change and will change at the pace and in the areas where you are willing to change.

It is also based on the philosophy that we change our business one conversation at a time.

It is also based on the inextricable link between who we are and how we do what we do.

I hope they help you think about the way you think about 2016!

Heading into 2016 with a mind leap, a determination, a sense that it can go somewhere, that we can make a choice to leapfrog into it. The question is ………..

In other words “If you aim at nothing you will hit it every time.”

So, how about fixing some objectives, outcomes, end points, game changers regarding life and work for the year ahead?

Here is a suggestion to consider …..

Seeing differently

Page 8: Thinking about the way we think about and where we are heading in 2016 mp2

What do we mean by ‘seeing differently’?

• What we mean by ‘seeing differently’ is a particular state of mind, an outlook, a way of ‘seeing’, a perspective, a daily evaluation of the ‘lenses’ we live and work with - a new or fresh outlook for 2016.

• If you wear glasses you know that all lenses need cleaning and renewal at some point and this process can be a check up on the lenses we see through as we head into 2016.

• For example ………

Seeing differentlyin 4 areas

The way we see ourselves:• On the inside• Our strengths and talents• Our routines, our future, our

priorities• Our emotional wake – what we

leave when we have left the room• Coming out from behind ourselves

and being seen.• What am I pretending not to know?

The way we see others:• Our colleagues, our friends, our family• Our Debtors and Creditors• Our enemies• Our neighbours• The opposite gender• The less able• “Authenticity is not something you

have; it is something you choose.”

The way we see each day:• Tackle our toughest

challenge today• Live with a sense of hope

and a future• Trust and obey your

instincts• Master the courage to be

real with ourselves• Know the gaps between

the values I stand for and the way I behave

• Know the gaps between the talents I have and what I don’t bring to my work or relationships

• That today truly is a gift and if I don’t believe it, remember those who have died

• “How we spend our days is how we spend our lives”. (Annie Dillard)

The way we see nature:• “Look deep into nature and

then you will understand everything better” (Albert Einstein)

• “He is richest who is content with the least, for content is the wealth of nature.” (Socrates)

• “It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.” (Robert Louis Stevenson)

• “Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.” (John Ruskin)

Page 10: Thinking about the way we think about and where we are heading in 2016 mp2

What do we seemost days?Opposite is the well known image of the old woman young woman illusion!Which, if any, do we see as we take a look?

“Each of us tends to think we see things as they are, that we are objective. But this is not the case. We see the world, not as it is, but as we are or, as we are conditioned to see it. When we open our mouths to describe what we see, we in effect describe ourselves, our perceptions, our paradigms.

Our paradigms, correct or incorrect, are the sources of our attitudes and behaviours, and ultimately our relationships with others.”Source: Stephen Covey 7 Habits Pp 28-30

It would therefore appear we live, work and play the way we see

What a game changer – a change of perspective which leads to a change of life and lifestyle

Might we ‘see differently’ in terms of …….

1. Being the kind of person who generates positive energy and who can sidestep negative energy rather than empowering it?

2. Being aware that the fundamental outcome of most communication is misunderstanding

3. Recognising that the problem can be the way we see the problem?

4. Know that “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” (Aristotle)

5. Know that the answers are in the room, inside us all

6. Trusting our instincts more and more

7. Discover that the conversation is the relationship and not mistake talking for conversation

8. Learn to deliver the message without the load

9. Know that saying no is not the problem in fact it is often the solution

10. Know that we must extend to others what we want to receive. It begins with us.

What do we mean KISS more??

We mean applying the KISS principle (source Wikipedia)

04/02/2016 14

The acronym was reportedly coined by Kelly Johnson, lead engineer at the Lockheed Skunk Works (creators of the Lockheed U-2 and SR-71 Blackbird spy planes, among many others). While popular usage has transcribed it for decades as "Keep it simple, stupid",

Johnson transcribed it as "Keep it simple stupid" (no comma), and this

reading is still used by many authors. There was no implicit meaning that an engineer was stupid; just the opposite.

The principle is best exemplified by the story of Johnson handing a team of design engineers a handful of tools, with the challenge that the jet aircraft they were designing must be repairable by an average mechanic in the field under combat conditions with only these tools. Hence, the "stupid" refers to the relationship between the way things break and the sophistication available to repair them.

So, how about ……...

For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.(Steve Jobs)
