Botswana may be the world’s largest diamond producer by value, but until

now few of these precious gems have been available for sale in Gaborone or Maun.

The reason is that, while Botswana pro-duces about 25 per cent of the world’s rough diamonds, these have traditionally been exported to Europe and elsewhere for cutting and polishing and rarely find their way back home unless they are set in the ring of a tourist.

But the prospect of more local diamonds being on sale to tourists came closer to reality in 2008 when Debswana, a joint

venture between the government of Botswana and De Beers, opened a US$ 83 million diamond processing plant in Gaborone with an annual capacity of 45 million carats.

JOINT VeNTure

Like Debswana, Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB) is a joint venture between De Beers and the Botswana government. DTCB will carry out local sales and marketing initiatives as well as cutting and polishing diamonds within Botswana. These diamonds will be both local and from those ‘aggregat-ed’ from around the world in Gaborone – an activity previously undertaken in London.

Square CuT Or Pear-ShaPed. . .

17

Debswana is the world’s leading dia-mond producer by value and has played a significant role in the transformation of Botswana’s economy over the past 42 years. It is the largest non-government employer and the largest earner of foreign exchange in Botswana. About 75 per cent of the nation’s income is from diamonds, which represent about 50 per cent of state revenues and about 30 per cent of gross domestic product.

Diamonds were only until now really avail-able locally from the Schachter & Namdar factory in Molepolole.

Unlike many others of its type around the world, the Botswana National

Museum is anything but a dull and worthy representation of a nation’s history.

In fact, the museum, which marks its 40th anniversary in 2008, is at the forefront of the nation’s cultural and artistic life, draw-ing some 45,000 visitors each year. These include children from local schools, stu-dents engaged in research and, of course, tourists visiting Gaborone.

exhIbITIONS

Each year, the National Museum plays host to five major exhibitions, each lasting a month and featuring local artists. The museum also organises craft exhibitions, encourages local artists and hosts exhibi-tions on topics such as HIV/AIDS.

The museum provides work space and financial support for individual painters and sculptors, and members of the public

can buy works directly from these artists. Exhibitions vary in length from one week to longer periods.

Other crafts on display include leather-work, pottery and ceramics. There is even a section for ‘own label’ clothing.

ShOwC aSe

The museum’s biggest event takes place in July and August when its main gallery is used for the National Basket & Craft Exhibition, which provides a showcase for basketry, beadwork, leatherwork, pot-tery, textiles and woodcarving. This is the world’s second-largest basket exhibition and the baskets are widely considered to be the best of their kind anywhere. Individual baskets can sell for as much as US$2,500 in the United States.

Another artistic form being encouraged by the museum is traditional music. It is easier for musicians to make a living than

it is for artists, so the museum plays a less active role in terms of providing subsidies – although the absence of royalties or copyright protection is a major issue. In another departure from the norm, the mu-seum has been lobbying the government for musicians to be given more support and recognition.

At the same time, the museum has been supporting an initiative to have the 22 July President’s Day celebrations extended and declared part of a cultural and herit-age month.

Tsodilo Hills, in the far north-west of Botswana and about 50 km from the

village of Sepupa, provide one of the world’s best examples of primitive rock paintings. What’s more, this is Botswana’s only Unesco World Heritage Site and the earliest evidence of man’s existence in the country.

Archaeologists believe the San people have occupied the area around the Tsodilo Hills for perhaps 100,000 years. The San con-sider the hills sacred and a resting place for spirits. However, the oldest rock paintings

date from about 3,000 years ago and the best examples are only between 800 and 1,300 years old – but no less impressive for their comparative modernity.

CONCeNTraTION

It is estimated that, within the nine square kilometres that make up the Tsodilo Hills, there are some 4,500 rock paintings. This is thought to be the highest concentration of rock art anywhere in the world.

The remoteness of the Tsodilo Hills is also unusual. The nearest other similar rock art site is about 250 km away from Tsodilo Hills. Emphasising its isolation is the fact that the style of rock art – with many soli-tary human figures and, for some reason, a preponderance of eland – is unlike any other in southern Africa.

The best-known collection of paintings is the so-called Van der Post Panel, named after the legendary explorer Sir Laurens

van der Post, who originally drew attention to the archaeological significance of the Tsodilo Hills in his seminal book, ‘The Lost World of the Kalahari’.

Access to the paintings is easy because the hills, which rise to 410 metres above the surrounding bushveld, can be reached by way of footpaths and reasonably shallow climbs. Visitors are advised to view in the early morning or late afternoon, however, because of the often high temperatures.

The Okavango Delta is Botswana’s best known and most visited tourist attrac-

tion. The Delta is generally reached via the gateway town of Maun, in the north of the country.

The Delta, which once formed part of Lake Makgadikgadi, has no outlet to the sea and therefore is forced to empty into the Kalahari Desert. It is the world’s biggest inland delta. Each year, during and shortly

after the rainy season, the Delta irrigates about 15,000 sq km of otherwise arid desert. However, the high temperatures of the Kalahari ensure that this excess water quickly evaporates.

This seasonal flooding commences during the southern hemisphere midsummer in the north and ends about six months later in the south of the Delta. This results in water rising in the north as it recedes in the south in summer, and rising in the south as it recedes in the north in winter. The nature of the annual flooding is benign, with floodplains and islands disappearing under the rising water and then reappearing in an ever-changing landscape at the end of each season.

Depending on the season, the Okavango hosts a wide variety of game: elephant, buffalo, rhino (black and white) and hippo

as well as the big cats (lion, cheetah and leopard) and other predators such as hyenas and wild dogs. The Delta is also home to over 400 species of birds.

The Moremi Game Reserve, which makes up about a quarter of the Delta’s total land area, forms a contiguous area with the Chobe National Park (see separate story) and is a mix of wetland and desert.

The Kalahari desert covers 900,000 sq km and spreads across seven coun-

tries in southern Africa. By far the largest part of this desert lies within Botswana, where it occupies about 70 per cent of the nation’s total land area. Its name derives from the Tswana word Kgalagadi, meaning ‘great thirst’.

In fact, it is more semi-desert than desert: the Kalahari is surprisingly green because most of the desert receives some rain each year. At times the landscape is covered with flowers and grass and even tracts of

woodland. After rain, its comparative lush-ness attracts a variety of animals including lions, several species of antelope and the ubiquitous meerkat.

game reSerVeS

The Kalahari contains three main game reserves: the giant 52,800 sq km Central Kalahari Game Reserve (the world’s second largest protected area); the 2,500 sq km Khutse Game Reserve; and the 38,000 sq km Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, of which 28,400 sq km is in Botswana and the remainder in South Africa.

The San people have lived in the Kalahari for 20,000 years as hunter-gatherers and, despite Botswana’s economic success, many still maintain a way of life largely unchanged over many centuries.

The Kalahari is one of Africa’s last great wildernesses and fixed accommodation is

in short supply. To get around this lack of lodgings and to ensure that the Kalahari remains unspoiled, many local companies offer mobile safaris that allow visitors access to even the most remote corners of the desert. Most of these either start in Maun or require an onward flight from Maun to a place such as Nata, a small village on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans.

JOurNey Of dISCOVery

Roger Dugmore is one of Botswana’s most highly qualified professional

guides. The son of a former Great White Hunter who travelled widely through Africa, wilderness is a part of life for him - indeed, when he first arrived in Maun almost 40 years ago, trips to school by boat usually involved dodging hippos and crocodiles, and lions and elephants were still a com-mon sight in the small frontier town.

Roger has been conducting photographic safaris since 1989 and his passion, knowl-edge, and experience of wild areas translate into an unforgettable adventure in some of the most beautiful parts of Botswana. His personal interests lie in photography and videography, and his photographs have been exhibited in Botswana’s National Museums. He has assisted film crews in the making of documentaries, including ‘Aspects of Life’ and ‘The Last Edens’ featuring the Okavango Delta and the Kalahari Desert.

dISCOVery

Roger’s philosophy is that every safari is a journey of discovery, where each sunrise marks the beginning of another day of adventure. He is uniquely qualified to take visitors to wild and untamed areas in absolute comfort, including three-course

meals, hot showers, cold drinks, and gives personal attention to ensure satisfaction and enjoyment. He prides himself on the number of guests that return each year, once again eager to experience adventure. He also tells some pretty good tall tales around the campfire.

Meno A Kwena Tented Camp & Safaris operates out of its base camp on the

banks of the Boteti Riverbed, one of the drainage systems that carry the Okavango floodwater deep into the Kalahari and the dry season range of southern Africa’s larg-est zebra and wildebeest migration.

Safari operations incorporate three pro-tected wildlife sanctuaries in the Kala-hari – The Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans National Parks, and Central Kalahari Game Reserve. The camp is just over an hour from Maun, and in a unique position for Kalahari safaris.

The company’s commitment to wildlife conservation through local community

involvement, uses tourism to maximise the benefits to local people, as well as preserv-ing wildlife through establishing wildlife corridors between the protected wildlife sanctuaries.

TeNTed C amP

Using safari tents and equipment from the company’s former ‘mobile’ safari days and combining these with permanent locally sourced and built fixtures, the fully serv-iced camp maintains an atmosphere of the original safari experience. The seven safari tents are set on the edge of the riverbank. A hundred feet below the camp is the wa-terhole that attracts thousands of animals during the dry season.

Other options include self-drives, mobile safaris, Kalahari helicopter safaris, wildlife and saltpans, tailor-made safaris, and film and photographic expeditions.

CreSTa hOTelS

In a country where the hospitality sec-tor consists mainly of small lodges and

camps, Cresta Hotels is unique in running eight quite large city hotels.

Cresta is easily Botswana’s largest hotel group in terms of bed capacity and is certainly the most broadly spread when it comes to locations.

The group’s flagship property is Kasane’s 111-room Mowana Safari Lodge. Gabor-one’s 159-room Cresta Lodge. Just 2 km from the city centre, the hotel is convenient

for business. Its restaurant, Chatters, is popu-lar with both locals and out-of-town visitors.

The central location of the 90-room Cresta President Hotel is perfect for those visit-ing Gaborone on business or to attend a trade show, conference or seminar. Most government ministries are just a short walk from the hotel. Its Terrace Restaurant seats up to 140 guests and offers a full menu throughout the day.

The three-star, 51-room Cresta Bosele Hotel is set in the town of Selebi-Phikwe, gateway to the Tuli area, famed for its abundant wildlife.

The 49-room Cresta Botsalo Hotel is located at Palapye, between Gaborone and Francis-town. The 96-room, four-star Cresta Thapa-ma Hotel is the largest hotel in Francistown and a natural meeting place for those on business or passing through Botswana’s second-largest commercial centre.

Perhaps the best located of the group’s properties is the 58-room Cresta Marang Hotel – just four km outside of Francis-town – which occupies what is arguably the finest natural location in Botswana.

Up in Maun, the 51-room Cresta Riley’s Hotel – known locally simply as Riley’s – offers an established base from which to explore the wonders of northern Bot-swana. Located on the banks of the slow moving Thamalakane River, it is also a perfect getaway location for work or play in peaceful surroundings.

Air Botswana operates and maintains a modern fleet of three 46-passenger ATR42-500 aircraft. In addition, Air Botswana owns one 78-passenger BAe146 jet.

The carrier’s mission statement says that “Air Botswana is committed to being the airline of first choice through the delivery of high quality service”. And in a highly com-petitive international airline sector this is ex-actly what Air Botswana is trying to achieve – albeit against a backdrop of operating in a vast country with a sparse population.

Total annual air passenger movements in, out and around Botswana are about 400,000 including 235,000 for scheduled services, of which Air Botswana carries

more than 150,000 – a 68 per cent market share. It is estimated that nearly half of Air Botswana’s passengers are business travel-lers and 31 per cent are tourists;

From Gaborone, Air Botwana’s route net-work comprises:

• 27 flights a week to Johannesburg

• two flights a week to Harare

• nine flights a week to Maun

• nine flights a week to Francistown

• three flights a week to Kasane

From Maun, Air Botswana offers 12 flights a week direct to Johannesburg.

Since its inception, Air Botswana has been 100 per cent owned by the Government of Botswana, but for some time there have been plans to privatise the carrier – although plans to do so were temporarily abandoned in 2007.

The airline contributes fully to the devel-opment of the tourism sector through its active membership of the Hotel & Tour-ism Association of Botswana (HATAB), its scheduling and its participation at major international travel shows.

On the ground, the airline’s reputation for excellence extends to the modern engineer-ing hangar at Gaborone’s Sir Seretse Khama International Airport. Air Botswana is able to carry out full maintenance of its own fleet and also on aircraft from carriers based in Zambia, Malawi, Kenya and Tanzania.

Six properties, all located in very dif-ferent areas of Botswana, are owned

and operated by Desert & Delta Safaris. Each property is managed by a team of dedicated professionals with many years’ experience.

The Desert & Delta philosophy is to provide guests with the best possible safari experience through ownership of some of Botswana’s finest locations and properties:

• Camp Moremi, situated on the Xakanaxa Lagoon within the Moremi Game Reserve.

• Chobe Game Lodge, as its name sug-gests, is set within the confines of Chobe National Park.

• The Savute Safari Lodge offers individu-ally designed suites that set the property apart from more typical safari-type accom-modation.

• Camp Okavango has been built on remote Nxaragha Island in the heart of the Okavango Delta and caters for those who demand the ultimate in exclusivity.

• Xugana Island Lodge – also in the Delta – is one of Africa’s finest wildlife and wil-derness sanctuaries.

• Leroo La Tau – A luxurious timber and thatch lodge overlooking the Makgadik-gadi National Park. Opening June 2008.

Part of the fun of visiting the various Desert & Delta lodges and camps is actually moving between them. A fully in-tegrated private air charter service is pro-vided by the air charter subsidiary, Safari Air, which operates single-engined Cessna 206, Airvans, twin engine Islanders and

turbine Cessna Caravans. Many of the lodges have their own private airstrips.

From the camps and lodges, Desert & Delta operates either seven-seat Toyota Landcruisers or nine-seat Land Rovers. Each vehicle has a removable canvas roof to provide shade and ample storage space for cameras, binoculars, etc. The Land Rovers at Chobe Game Lodge are equipped with 12-volt power points for guests’ cam recorders.

Wilderness Safaris was established in 1983 as an ecotourism company

that specialises in memorable wildlife experiences in some of the most remote and pristine areas in southern Africa, while remaining fiercely committed to protecting the planet’s precious natural and cultural resources. It shares these special places with guests from all over the world by operating camps and safaris in Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Seychelles.

The company offers wildlife, marine and heritage safaris in remote and pristine wilderness destinations, which are special-ised, educational, explorative and fun. Its ‘conservation through responsible tourism’

policy shares the benefits of tourism with local communities and ensures the protec-tion of these areas for future generations.

uNTOuChed

The reserves and concessions that Wil-derness Safaris manages cover some of Africa’s most impressive and untouched wildlife experiences. It operates privately on nearly 3 million hectares of southern Africa’s best wildlife and wilderness re-serves in some 54 lodges and camps. Wil-derness Safaris offers over 4,000 hectares per bed of private land, creating a sense of privacy, exclusivity and space that makes its operation unique.

Wilderness Safaris provides memorable wildlife experiences in Botswana’s most beautiful areas: the Okavango Delta, Linyanti and the Selinda. In these areas it operates in several private concessions, where its varied activities include game drives and night drives by vehicle as well as wildlife viewing by boat and dugout canoe (mokoro), which are ideal ways to see the

water areas. Walks are unsurpassed for being in touch with nature, while hides offer a great way to enjoy wildlife viewing and birding, especially during those mid-day siesta hours.

Wilderness Safaris is dedicated to respon-sible tourism in southern Africa, striving to ensure the protection of Africa’s spec-tacular natural heritage while sharing the benefits with its people. It was a finalist in the World Travel & Tourism Council’s 2007 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards, which recognise the world’s leading examples of best practice in responsible tourism development.

Botswana Development Corporation Ltd (BDC) was established in 1970 and is

wholly owned by the Government of Bot-swana. Since inception, BDC’s has aimed to be the country’s main agency for commer-cial and industrial development by provid-ing financial assistance to investors (both local and foreign) with viable projects.

Another core objective is to support projects that generate sustainable employ-ment for Batswana and for those that add to the skills of the local workforce. BDC also seeks to encourage citizen participa-tion in business ventures.

Additionally, BDC will consider giving its support to a project if it:

• Uses locally available resources.

• Produces products for export or substi-tutes imports.

• Fosters close links with local industry.

• Contributes to the development of Botswana’s existing resources and overall economic development.

Generally and despite these objectives, BDC does not wish to be a majority stakeholder but may bear the major burden of any devel-opment project if it’s in the national interest.

This is particularly true in terms of development finance where BDC has been instrumental in the sustained growth of the property market, through its 100% owned properties, and partnerships. The Property Division’s mandate is developing and managing hotel, residential, commer-cial and industrial properties for BDC.

The division also monitors a portfolio of property development loan facilities held with subsidiary, affiliate and non-affiliate

companies, through partnerships or joint venture developments.

sTRATEGy

The strategy is aimed at developing new businesses that are commercially viable, and sustainable. It must also contribute to the growth and economic diversifica-tion of Botswana. With a mandate of developing manufacturing, the Industry Division has a key role to play in the diver-sification of the economy.

BDC’s Agribusiness Division’s role is to help grow the local agricultural sector. There is strong emphasis on this particular sector as Botswana is keen that locally grown foodstuffs should reduce the country’s reli-ance on imports. Furthermore and given the slow rates of return from, and high-risk nature of, agribusiness projects, BDC’s involvement is crucial in this sector.

Botswana is a country best known for peace and tranquillity, its diamonds (the country is the world’s largest exporter by value), its phenomenal game viewing and wilderness areas and its excellent quality

beef. In all of Africa, Botswana stands out as a beacon of democracy and the rule of law.

Botswana has succeeded in the tourism sector (as in other sectors and activities), by operating an open approach to foreign investment, while also encouraging nationals to participate in the development of new tourism products and services.

This has enabled Botswana to benefit from a growing and highly successful tourism industry that has maintained a reputation at the premium end of the market while ensuring that fragile eco-systems in the pristine Okavango Delta and the Kalahari remain unspoilt for the enjoyment of future generations.

The company’s policy of operating only new 65-seater buses has brought a high level of reliability, comfort and sophistica-tion to the two routes. Modern luxury is being in truly pristine wilderness, no phones, no television,

no email, a million acres and ten million stars – just like visiting Africa as it was tens of thousands of years ago

Kwando Safaris is very proud to be 100 per cent Botswana owned and feels privileged to be concession holders of over 4,000 sq km of wilderness in northern Botswana for the exclusive use and enjoyment of its guests. This area is outside of the national parks and game reserves, with no crowds, no fences, where the animals roam as they have for thousands of years.

cONcEssiON AREAs

Kwando Safaris operates two ‘concession’ areas in Botswana. One is in the perma-nent water of the Okavango Delta, but this doesn’t mean guests are limited to water activities. This concession is adjacent to Moremi Game Reserve, so provides the best of both worlds. The other concession is in the far north of Botswana in an area

renowned for its large herds of elephants and frequent predator sightings.

Kwando operates its four camps all year round – Kwara and Little Kwara in the Okavango Delta and Lebala and Lagoon camps in the Kwando River Concession (in the far north of Botswana).

ABsORBiNG

The fascinating and absorbing Kwando Safaris circuit is one of the best available for the discerning visitor to Africa. The style is intimate, private and personal, with the company and the staff going out of their way to treat every guest as though they are a member of the ‘Kwando Family’.

Recommended circuits include at least two nights at either of the camps in the Okavango Delta – Kwara or Little Kwara, a couple of nights at Lebala Camp on the edge of the Linyanti marsh – a favourite spot for predators, two nights at Lagoon camp on the edge of a permanent lagoon

(about three hours from Lebala Camps) and finishing with a few nights at the delightful Songwe Village – situated on the edge of a gorge in Zambia and close to the Victoria Falls – where guests can participate in all the wonderful activities that the Victoria Falls has to offer.

Abu Camp, the flagship of Elephant Back Safaris’ operations in Okavango, has six Afro-Bedouin-style luxurious tents with en-suite bathrooms. Each has its own private elevated teak deck sculpted around sycamore figs or jackalberry trees.

The essence of the camp is the elephant herd. Guests are ‘introduced’ to the elephants shortly after arrival and are soon high in the saddle for morning and afternoon rides. Guests are invited to become part of the elephant herd during their stay, watching them being fed in the evenings, enjoying the frolics of the babies and accompanying them on foot as they

move through the bush. In addition, guests are offered game viewing from open vehicles and mokoro trips.

Villa Okavango affords total privacy and luxurious relaxation for a maximum of four guests. The whole ambience of the villa is that of a luxurious private home in secluded splendour.

Seba Camp: This 12-bed camp boasts a family unit with two en-suite bedrooms, each with its own private swimming pool. The camp is also the base of one of the most fascinating elephant research projects in the area.

It is a truly spectacular area in which to ride and camp. Macatoo combines luxury with a happy camp atmosphere and the spirit of the Okavango wilderness, with its sheer beauty and diversity.

The camp features large, en-suite, walk-in, twin-bed tents. Centrally there is a large furnished mess tent and tucked away a private pool. On longer safaris, guests have the opportunity to experience the thrill of riding out to a mobile fly-camp.

Riding groups will normally be no more than seven guests, while the camp accommodates 12 guests in all. Activities include horseback safaris, game drives, helicopter rides, bird walks, night drives, seasonal boating, canoeing and fishing.

Kwara camp is situated on the edge of the permanent waters of the Okavango Delta and shares a common boundary with the Moremi Game Reserve. Owing to the specific location of the camp, Kwara is able to offer, power boating, mokoro trips, walks and game drives all year round. In addition, Kwara is in a large private concession, enabling the game drives to operate both off road and at night.

The camp consists of eight luxury tents accommodating 16 guests. There is one honeymoon suite. The camp setting is a tall treed island on the edge of the Okavango Delta.

The teak furniture created by Zimbabwean master craftsmen is elegant, comfortable and simple. Most of the tents are raised on teak decks to afford views over the surrounding plains and lagoon with the resident hippos.

Each tent comprises a spacious bedroom area, bathroom including a Victorian ball-and-claw bath tub and double basin, outside reeded shower, dressing area and side entrance to preserve privacy.

Lebala is the Tswana word for wide-open plains and each tent has extensive views over expansive tracts of African plains and wetlands that comprise part of the Kwando-Linyanti

The camp comprises two separate seven-roomed satellite camps (including two family rooms), each with its own raised dining, lounge and bar area tucked beneath a canopy of cool, shady, indigenous trees and with a magnificent vista across

the floodplains. A stargazing deck with comfortable cushions protrudes into the floodplain – a place to gaze upwards or a convivial camp fire setting.

An open boma and al fresco dining area overlooks the Xugana Lagoon expanse of pristine water that makes up the permanent delta. The lounge, bar and dining areas are set back under the ebony and African mangosteen tree canopy in open-sided thatched structures. The swimming pool, located within the mature gardens in the centre of the island, is a perfect place to relax.

The lodge accommodates just 16 guests in large raised reed and thatch lagoon-facing chalets with en-suite facilities and private viewing decks situated on the shaded fringe of the island.

Exploring the delta by motorboat or mokoro, combined with walking on surrounding islands in the concession, gives guests the chance to experience a classic Okavango Delta safari.

Birdwatching opportunities are outstanding, and fishing for bream and tigerfish is also offered as an activity at the lodge.

Zibadianja Camp is moving to a great new site that looks towards the Zibadianja Lagoon.

The new site is about 2 km south-east from the old camp and is situated in the eastern sector of the Selinda Reserve under ancient giant jackalberry and red ivory forests.

The uninterrupted views over these productive floodplains are truly breathtaking. The enormous shady trees, the palm fringed savannas and the high concentrations of wildlife and birdlife out front characterise the camp, as do the elevated

views across the flood plain that forms an extension of the southern shores of the Zibadianja Lagoon.

Zibadianja Camp is located in the Selinda Reserve, a private wildlife concession of some 1,350 sq km located in the northern Kwando/Linyanti wildlife management areas.

Okavango Helicopters has been operating in Northern Botswana for 15 years and has developed a great knowledge of the area from the air.

A helicopter is a unique way to view the scenic beauty and wildlife of the Okavango. The main reason for this is the great visibility provided from a helicopter and also because flying at slow speeds allows for good viewing. Helicopters also do not experience the turbulence felt in light aircraft which offer similar services.

Okavango Helicopters provides intercamp transfers, scenic and photographic flights with the doors removed for better viewing and photography. It will structure the flights to its clients’ requirements. While aiming to please, all flights are carried out with minimum disturbance to the environment and wildlife.

Okavango Helicopters also specialises in filming, aerial survey and game work.

Destination South is one the fastest growing companies in Botswana. It was founded by Alan Michael Schmidt, who has over 25 years of professional hunting experience.

Tonunga Camp, in the controlled hunting area, CT1, is in the central district of northern Botswana and is one of the largest hunting concession areas in the country.

The major trophy in this area is elephant. Owing to the remoteness and inaccessibility of the concession, the serious trophy hunter has an excellent chance of big ivory. Other

species found in the area include lion, leopard, buffalo, eland, gemsbok, kudu, impala, zebra, duiker, steenbok and giraffe.

The Mokolodi Wildlife Foundation was formed in 1991 with the aim of promoting wildlife conservation and environmental education for the children of Botswana. Today, it is a nation-ally recognised educational, conservation and tourist facility.

The first project of the foundation was the creation of the Mokolodi Nature Reserve in 1994 on 30 sq km of donated land outside Gaborone. In addition to naturally occurring animal species such as warthogs, steenbok, kudu and a variety of snakes, several species have been reintroduced, including zebra, giraffe, eland, ostrich, hippos and rhinos.

The reserve contains Botswana’s only wild cheetah transit station for the relocation of ‘problem’ cheetahs brought in by ranchers, and four young, orphaned African elephants who are being raised as a joint venture with the Serendib Elephant Orphanage.

The philosophy behind Mokolodi Nature Reserve is that income from tourism and the sustainable use of wildlife and natural resources is used to subsidise the conservation projects and the environmental education programme.

Botswana Development Corporation (BDC) was established in 1970 to be the country’s main agency for commercial and industrial development. The Government of Botswana owns 100 per cent of the issued share capital of the corporation.

BDC’s role is to provide financial assistance to investors with commercially viable projects and to support projects that gen-erate sustainable employment for Botswana and add to the skills of the local workforce. It also encourages participation in business ventures.

Furthermore, BDC supports the development of viable busi-nesses which use locally available resources, make products for export or to substitute imports, foster linkages with the local industry or contribute to the development of Botswana’s resources and overall economy.

As far as possible, BDC wishes to limit its involvement in new projects to a minority interest, but will bear the major burden of development where this is in the national interest.

Shell Oil Botswana has over 50 outlets countrywide and is the leading retailer in Botswana. In addition, the expansion of the retail network has created more than 300 new jobs in the country. Shell began operations in the then Protectorate of Bechuanaland in 1956, although Shell fuels had been sold in the country for over 20 years.

Since 1995 Shell has invested over P50 million in upgrading its retail outlets as part of the Shell Group’s international launch of a new retail image. The project included rebuilding existing outlets to the new design, opening new filling sta-

tions, introducing 24-hour Select Food Stores and opening the country’s first Ultra City Service Station in Mahalapye.

The upgrade project ultimately aimed to provide a better service to motorists and reflected the company’s commitment to striving for higher levels of customer satisfaction.

Shell continues to look for new ways to help the development of Botswana, both through raising standards within the oil industry and promoting national economic and social goals.
