TW can’t thank London enough for receiving our first issue with open arms, being handed out bi-weekly in the morning and evening side by side with more established free publications like the Metro, Sport, Stylist, Short list and Evening standard, we are pleasantly surprised with how London has received our publication.
We thank you for taking time out to send us your various feedbacks, both by mail and in person. To all of you who sent positive feed backs we say thank you; we promise to continue to give you
a quick read magazine that helps you plan your weekends and for those that were not so positive we say thank you also. We would like a second chance as we have made improvement to areas which you have identified.
We would like to specifically say thank the following people for their outstanding feedbacks. Elena from Aviva, for your comments, It was very encouraging and you will notice that we have made adjustments in areas you identified, Sarah in Soho for the encouragement. Thanks to Corrine also for
opening our eye to off West End theatre and not to forget Crystal from Kingston, we have a surprise for you in beauty page. And we would also like to thank all of those that invited us to review their facilities and eventsSome of the improvement made is an inclusion of an arts, exhibition and theatre from non west end theatres.
For this issue we have a bumper pack for our new fans, it starts with the review of the Smallest pop up hotel in the world, which was brought to our notice by a certain Mr Kennan (you didn’t say where from) and we continue by highlighting some exciting deals as we usually do and the
review of Tennessee Williams’ Cat on the Hot Tin Roof is also highly recommended. You should look out for the review of the SILK restaurant which used to be a court room; That was very exciting too. Also keep an eye out for the movie page and the night life section as there are some exciting reviews to look out for.I also encourage you to join the group on facebook (This Weekend London) and Twitter (Weekend London) to get up to date info about what’s going on.Please continue to send your feed back to us: [email protected]

Hello London,
WWW.THISWEEKENDPAPER.CO.UK
For five nights only, a room in the most exclusive hotel in the world
becomes available, right here in London.
After being greeted by your personal concierge at the check in desk nearby, the room features a luxurious double bed, complete with a HD flat screen television, high quality surround sound system, compact refrigerator, dining area and en-suite facilities … oh, and it’s on wheels. I’ll let you read that list again.
Yes, the entire top-class hotel experience is contained within an Airstream caravan converted into a self-contained getaway based on the Raddisson Edwardian Bloomsbury St. Hotel.
The world’s smallest pop-up hotel is set to tour London, allowing its exclusive guests to gaze out their window after an invigorating night’s rest to a variety of the capital’s best loved landscapes.
From March 15th, the portable penthouse will take residence at ZSL London Zoo, Alexandra Palace, The South Bank, Covent Garden and the Old Royal Navy College in Greenwich consecutively.
Designed to highlight the unique nature of attractions, accommodation and entertainment that are available throughout the capital, the pop-up hotel is certainly set to raise eyebrows as it perches itself next to a variety of hotspots. The chance to stay in this remarkable and innovative ‘hotel’ can only be won through the Visit London website.
The lucky guests will not only be footsteps away from major London landmarks, but also surrounded by the vast choice of shops, cafés, bars, restaurants and entertainment venues that only London can offer.
Let us know your favourite places in London where you would park the pop-up hotel. Send us an e-mail to [email protected]! We’ll try to include some mock-ups of the pop-up hotel in our next issue or on our Facebook fan page – This Weekend London.
More ‘Car Park’ than ‘Park Lane’…

Even though the King of Pop seems to be gone his walk on the moon
has left foot prints that will remain fresh amongst us for generations to come, Thriller-Live is one of such. Widely described as Magical, this West End production is far more than just theatre it is like being in a concert, with two hours of legendry hits spanning over 3 decades that will move anyone including a man who have been in a coma for that long. The production is a feel good celebration of the life of the king of pop and the Jackson 5
Choreographed by award-winning director Gary Lloyd and by 5 time MTV award-winning LaVelle Smith Jnr, a very energetic and outstanding cast of actors and dancers (KIERAN ALLEYNE, JOHN MOABI, ROGER WRIGHT, MARIA LAWSON, RICKO BAIRD, MITCHELL ZHANGAZHA, STERLING WILLIAMS are amongst a few), including three different Michael Jacksons every night including a girl. The performances are also supported by a magnificent live band and very impressive use multimedia effects.
TW
In just one year of being in the west end this show has won the hearts of many, it is definitely a TW recommend for the weekend.

When I was a kid, a product tagged ”made in America” meant it was
of the highest quality. You might not think this is the case anymore but multiple award winning director Debbie Allen’s production of 1955 Tennessee William’s classic “cat on a thin roof” proves otherwise. Starring an award winning cast of James Earl Jones, Phylicia Rashad (the Cosby show), Sanaa Lathan (love and basketball), and our very own Adrian Lester (Mickey Bricks of Hustle) including Peter de Jersey and Nina
Sosanya. After only 20 weeks this cat has left elephant prints all over broad way, grossing over £8 million and it’s currently doing the same in the West End. James Earl Jones proves that age does not slow down true greatness by playing the part of big daddy; the head of powerful southern African-American family, whose last birthday becomes the day of reckoning as secrets are let out of the closet and truths emerge from under the carpet. This is a story of a dying father (James Earl Jones) and his millionaire estate, a defeated favourite son (Adrian Lester), his questionable role in the death of his friend, and his failing marriage with his sexually frustrated wife (Sanaa Lathan), an intrusive but subdued
mother (Phylicia Rashad) and an older brother with his scheming wife (Peter de Jersey and Nina Sosanya.). This story is a family drama filled with all kinds thought provoking of emotions yet it leaves you feeling up lifted. .it leaves West End in couple of weeks and even though its worth chasing around the world to see why don’t catch this cat while you can.It is running at Novella Theatre
Performances Mon – Sat at 7.30pm, with matinees on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2.30pm
Tickets, priced from £10.00 - £49.50, are available from the Novello Theatre Box Office on 0844 482 5170 or to buy online.

It tells the tale of how Christie Daae accepts an offer to perform in America (New York) after a ten year absence on stage in Paris. She soon finds out the true identity of the anonymous impresario who has lured
her from France to sing. This show has been long awaited and expectations are very high. If you like to be an early bird and want to be one of the first to see it why don’t you visit www.loveneverdies.com to read the composer note, know the cast and watch a videos.

Adapted for stage by Patrick Prior, Two Women is a 1999 novel by
bestselling novelist Martina Cole who has sold over 8 million copies including topping The Sunday Times bestseller list. Several of her books have been adapted to TV also including The Take and Dangerous lady but this is the first adaptation to stage. This story set in east London, recounts the story of lady whose abusive experience of a father jealous love and a jealous mother’s nonchalance pushes her to seek refuge in a marriage which had signs of hell written all over it from the alter. She remained a patient, strong, enduring wife and loving mother through the heart breaks and betrayals until a faithful day when she personally called the police reporting how she drove a hammer into the skull of her hammers fan husband. The show starts by introducing us
to two women; Susan an abused east end mother and Matty a middle class wife who did not want kids from her husband, both cell mates in Holloway prison for the murder of their husbands..
The story then focuses on Susan goes in-depth in to the major experience that lead to Holloway and how her raw and sincere nature helps her find true friends in the most unlikely places as she hope her appeal for freedom to reunite her with her children will be granted. The transition in time from present to past and back was skill fully managed, especially with the performance of Susan (Cathy Murphy) which was absolutely brilliant, she was practically on stage throughout and the beauty of her performance was the way she changed emotions, she went from happy to sad and back like she was changing TV channels .
A very serious story, with a couple of very provocative scenes which sometimes make you close your eyes for a second and other times make you feel like getting on stage to correct abusive behaviours. It was however skilfully made light with jokes and 10 truckloads of swear words that will probably make Alpacino’s Scarface seem like East EndersThis show is definitely a jewel in the east; it was nothing less than brilliant and I hope it stays longer than planned. Now I know why Martina Cole is one of my mum’s favourite authors.
Cast: It features a star studded cast including Frances Albery, Victoria Alcock (Bad Girls), Marc Bannerman (EastEnders), Michael Bertenshaw, Sophie Cosson, Marcus Ellard, Sheryl Gannaway, Laura Howard (Midsomer Murders), Cathy Murphy (House of Eliott), Alison Newman (Footballer’s Wives), Sally Oliver (Emmerdal, it’s also directed by Ryan Romain.

M a u r i c eFrom the novel by E. M. ForsterMaurice is a stage adaptation of a novel published in 1971 after the death of the author E.M foster, it tells homosexual story of a certain Maurice Hall in class rigid Britain, the Edwardian era precisely. A time which represented the height of the country house, class system driven Britain, a time of long summer afternoon parties, leisure sports and a growth in industry and fashionMaurice was born into this upper class of the society; he was faced with the challenges of having to conform as his life was all planned out as it usually was back in those days. On his way to Cambridge Maurice takes brave a detour from the life set before him by falling in love with boy. True homosexual love is tested when he is faced with rejection from family and society in country where homosexuality is against the law.
The novel was written in early 20th century around 1914 and was believed to be un-publishable at the time. It was also made into film in 1987.

The dead schoolRaphael Bell a devoted schoolmaster with traditional teaching values finds his world colliding with Malachy Dudgeon also a schoolmaster who loves rock music and makes rules only in order to break them. What will be the resultant effect on the lives of this men with sharp contrasting views on life and impact on their future and belief? This drama is interwoven with music and song which lends a hand to this powerful story which jumps between the past and present to reveal the cost of the pursuits of men’s convictions and love that is left in its wake.

Christian AudigierWhen the late king of pop dubs a designer “the king of fashion”, then he surely must have something special, Christian Audigier is nothing more than special, With hugely successful brands like Ed Hardy, Von Dutch, and self named Christian Audigier, he has built a clothing line into a lifestyle
brand. This time he has moved from our closets to our tables, in June 2009 he
lunched the delightful range of Premier Cru Champagne, working with award winning winemakers Dumangin, based in Chigny Les Roses, France to create two distinctively branded varieties Christian Audigier Premier Cru Champagne namely Christian Audigier Premier Cru Pink Champagne and Christian Audigier Grande Reserve (Brut). The bottles are definitely the most attractive in the champagne market, the kind you always want to be seen with as they stand out with signature Christian Audigier naughty rock love tattoo imagery.I must confess I did not expect to be wowed by the taste, this not just some pretty bottle, it’s quality champagne that ranks up there with some of the very best in the market. The bottle and its content are definitely perfectly married.Since its lunch over 7 months ago it’s been seen on the table of the young affluent upwardly mobiles in the classiest of restaurants, bars and clubs of the world and it has proved that it definitely deserves a place on our tables in London. At just about £60.00 retail, and from about £120 in the clubs.

Once upon a time in the era of Edwardian glamour and class in London, a certain chef from Asia found himself being questioned in Court. Just off Oxford Street, this courthouse was accusing him of stealing the hearts of Londoners with his amazing dishes. Before the final judgement was passed, his last words echoed around building... “this room would be perfect as a restaurant!”
Ok, I'm sure you have guessed this didn't actually happen, however I'm pretty convinced Mick Jagger, Oscar Wilde and John Lennon didn't have food on their minds as their stood on trial in this old courtroom, which has now been converted into the SILK restaurant.
This 2009 Michelin recommended restaurant is This Weekend's chosen Restaurant of the Weekend, carefully located in the Courthouse Doubletree by Hilton Hotel on Great Marlborough Street (just behind Oxford street). The restaurant is said to be named after the 'Silk Road' Routes that criss-crossed Eurasia.
What really sets this restaurants apart is that it has retained all the original court room features; the judge's bench, the witness' stand, and the lighting from the original glass ceiling from the days when it was still the Marlborough Street Magistrates Court, closed only in
1998. The dark wooden panel walls and Victorian style carpentered docks of the courtroom certainly provide an 'official' atmosphere to the restaurant, uniquely contrasting with the varied Asian influenced cuisine. Similarly, the gentle background music has pan-Asian roots, creating an intimate experience for the diners.
The Silk Restaurant may be guilty of being a little small, but who needs a football pitch to be 'witness' to the delightful culinary skills put together by Head Chef Rajesh Parnar, and his talented team.
On our visit, TW was treated with a starter menu that included a variety of appealing appetisers; chicken leg in Pandan leaf, which is a juicy, moist
fillet of well seasoned poultry, and Kentish Roe Deer with chilli paste and coriander seeds. By far the most pleasantly surprising item on the menu is the Welsh lamb, which is tender and flavoursome, accompanied perfectly by a rich vegetable stew. The herbed Thai chicken breast is also delicious, served with a garlic sauce that enriches the senses. The dessert platter includes a range of sweet and delicate treats, from a simple fruit salad and sweetened milk, to a fabulous chocolate mousse with ice cream and lemon parfait with strawberry sago. The waiting service is also an exemplary part of the experience, with attentive, but not invasive staff always available for requests if needed. TW was also informed that this menu is reviewed and reworked up to 3 times a year.
After such a fantastic experience at the Silk Restaurant in the Courthouse Doubletree, TW will certainly be revisiting it, and we suggest you do too!

This Weekend london’s Top 5 Venues to help you get over your ex
I stare at my phone with confusion, as a message comes through. The text i had just sent; “Hey what are your plans for this weekend *winky face*”. Having high expectations for what the reply might be, i couldn’t quite believe what i was reading....“Hey been meaning to text, feeling a little tied down it’s just not working out”Something about those last 5 words felt like a bullet to my chest with no prior warning...I rubbed my eyes and turned on the lights, with the last phrase running through my mind seeking meaning, it suddenly dawns on me, that THAT was a break up text.
My girl friend says “It’s his loss” as I remain in denial, not 14 days after valentine, where did all the magic we had a couple of days go. Well it’s half past crazy o’clock now and I already feel like I’ve been scripted ina breakup novel entitled “How to lose your guy 14 days after Valentines”
1 bottle of Laurent Perrier later, and a quick move from denial to acceptance, knowing that negotiating with this man was out of the question.
I’ve decided that it’s time to get my Mojo back! Ah ha! I won’t be so quick to play Russian roulette with my time. Oh you thought I meant with my heart?
Note to self: Must get mojo back on track and feature at all the “IT” places this weekend, take Calculated Risks and look in wardrobe for Killer Heels I’m off to shake this off!Check out This Weekend London’s top 5 Venues to get over your ex like I did and maybe meet your Next???

THIS WEEKEND LONDON
As London Fashion Week's official hotel, The May Fair is home to one of central London's premier day spas. I visited to try the Perfect Peace package; a two hour pampering session combining two of The May Fair's most sought after treatments - a traditional Swedish massage and prescription facial.
First the massage; a drizzle of warm oil started 60 minutes of kneading that left me in such deep relaxation, I was practically asleep by the end of the treatment. Next the facial that was specifically tailored to suit my combination skin. It had all the elements of a traditional facial as you'd expect; cleanser, exfoliation, tone and massage, but in addition an AHA treatment to shift dead skin and bring out a healthy glow, which it did successfully.
The surroundings are as luxurious as you'd expect from The May
Fair, and the spa has some impressive features including a herbal sauna and aromatic steam room that guests can enjoy up to an hour before their treatment time. The facilities have been designed with a spiritualistic feel; Asian inspired symbols and incense candles enabled me to forget the busy streets of London just outside, for a moment of r&r.
The Perfect Peace package costs £180.To book call: 020 7769 4041

1 Clinque Skin Supplies for Men Cream Shave
100ml, £12.50
Liz Earle Skincare has been dubbed Britain's best-kept secret by top beauty experts. Made from naturally active ingredients, they boast soothing and rejuvenating properties to plump and perk up tired skin; our beauty editor puts two of their most iconic products to the test.
THE REVIEW
1 Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser, £12.75
Simple enough to use and luxurious enough to covet; the Hot Cloth Cleanser is an indulgent treat with minimum fuss. Just massage gently onto dry skin and use the damp muslin cloth to polish off the cream. Packed with skin-loving ingredients such as rosemary, chamomile and cocoa butter, it's an ultra nourishing way to cleanse the face daily. It left my skin feeling pampered and soft to touch. The buzz around this product is well deserved.
2 Liz Earle Superskin Moisturiser, £31.50
This gem of a product has been a skin saver for me; It claims to help replenish mature and very dry skin, however in my opinion, it is also beneficial for combination and acne prone skin. Rich in antioxidants and free from liquid paraffin waxes, it improves the skin's elasticity and reduces blemishes. One week of using the Superskin Moisturiser and my complexion has improved considerably. This product will be on my list of must-haves for a long time to come.

From Paris with Love
“Be careful what you pray for” is the moral to this action packed story featuring Legendary John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The plot tell the story of a personal aide to the Ambassador in France named James Reece (Jonathan) who is also an inactive low level CIA agent gets a long dreamed chance to work in the field on a real assignment to stop a terrorist attack with very experienced
Charlie Waxman (Travolta) who unknowingly to James was a trigger happy, wisecracking loose cannon agent. James had had enough of the action and wanted to return to his simple near perfect life when realises that he is also a target on the list of the terrorist. This is an action packed movie as with some very hilarious scenes.
TW
SHUTTER ISLAND (Drama Thriller)
The movie set in the 1950s tell a story when a federal marshal Teddy and his new partner are assigned to criminally insane hospital/prison in Shutter Island outside Boston to investigate the disappearance of a murderess. They soon find out that the hospital staff where hiding valuable information that will lead to cracking the case, as they pushed for answers a hurricane hit the island
which set more prisoners loose and cuts all communication to the main land. This confusion leads to several twists to story including answers to all the questions he been asking. This movie by Oscar winning director Martin Scorsese has grossed over £20 million in its first weekend in America, as it feature a heavy hitter cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams and more.At cinemas March 12www.shutterisland.com
Percy Jackson & the Lightning Theif
Chris Columbus, director of Harry Potter & the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets, brings us a film with a familiar feel to the JK Rowling franchise, but with an original twist. Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) stars as a schoolboy who discovers that he is a demi- god; the son of the Greek God of Water, Poseidon. With this heritage comes aquatic-based abilities which he recognises with hindsight after
discovering the truth. Percy findsout almost immediately that these magnificent powers also put him in unparalleled amounts of danger, as King of the Gods, Zeus, has his lightning bolt stolen. The youngster is a prime suspect and becomes subject to an onslaught of attacks by mythical creatures. The film casts the star duo of GoldenEye with Pierce Brosnan as Percy’s aide, Mr Brunner and Sean Bean as Zeus, as well as an appearance from Uma Thurman as the sinister, yet seductive, Medusa.

THIS WEEKEND LONDON
Behind every untrusting girl is a boy who made her that way.Number of members: c.115,000The Lesson: The internet is made up of sadists, or people who are pathetic.
Number one on my list of perplexing Facebook fan pages is this one. I’m not even certain what the members are professing to be a fan of? Is it applauding the boy who broke the eponymous girl’s heart, because that would mean that there are a lot of emotional sadists on Facebook.Alternatively, it may just be for people who like untrusting women, which suggests it would be a call to arms for like-minded fans of distrustful women to get together to discuss the best way of breaking a woman’s trust.Dropping the facetious-tinted lenses that I view most Facebook fan pages with, this is obviously a page for people who consider themselves untrusting, presumably as a means to get even at whoever betrayed their trust.Perhaps it is because I’m male, or perhaps it is because I’m British, but something seems intrinsically wrong about advertising the fact that you’re: a) untrusting, and b) the fact that you’ve let a boy hurt you in the past, to your entire network of friends. I can’t help but feel that this group single-handedly puts back the cause of feminism a good half decade.
The sexist legend who put this on his maths paperNumber of members: c. 115,000The Lesson: 1950s views of women are not only socially acceptable, but also funny.
To be honest, I’ve seen this before and it caused a small amount of mirth, it’s a question from a maths paper featuring a woman- Tracey- quoting an equation, the question then asks the participant to say why Tracey is wrong. The answer given on this particular paper is “She’s a woman”, which, as I said, did raise a smile. However, I did not find it funny enough to warrant starting, or even joining a group supporting the bloke (or woman with no self-esteem) who wrote it.Then again, whoever started the group wasn’t applauding the joke itself, but “The sexist legend” who wrote it, which sort of implies that he likes people who are sexist, and that he also lacks the intelligence to produce the curt response himself. He also uses the word “legend” in a stupid place- which for some reason really irritates me. I doubt that the story of “The sexist with a sense of humour” will endure as long as that of say, King Arthur, but then again I’ve done my part to pass it on.
ALARM…Snooze…ALARM…Snooze…ALARM.*Checks Time*…SHIIIITNumber of members: c. 1,559,000The Lesson: Some people are not good at waking up
It is one of the fundamental truths of human existence that after a decent night’s sleep, people do not enjoy getting up, and that some people may, on occasion, hit snooze a couple of times and regret it. I don’t understand why it is necessary to become a fan of something so utterly banal. Unless it’s crumpets. Crumpets are awesome.
Kill The Lot: Paedophiles, rapists, abusers of all kindsNumber of members: c. 29,200The Lesson: Paedophiles, rapists and abusers of all kinds are bad.
Yes, much like the previous point, this group points out the blaringly obvious. Only this group goes much further and suggests that they kill Paedophiles, rapists and abusers of all kinds, presumably “all kinds” includes abuse of human rights, and with one member advocating that the any of the above groups should be shot on site, bypassing the right to a fair trial, I suppose that suggests that some members of the group should also be shot. And not just for their abuse of the English language.
WOW…YUH DON’T LYK ME…>What do you expect me to cry or summinkNumber of members: c. 1,774The Lesson: People are so, so stupid
This group, just going by name, irritates me in so many ways, the lack of punctuation other than ellipses, the lack of spelling, the apparently aggressive demeanour of whoever created it, defending their right to be a moron in as loud and as objectionable a way as possible. I read this title and I am immediately reminded of a 14 year old chav who I once saw on the bus, who was near enough chewing the ear off anyone who looked at her, this brought her further attention.
6 Lessons (and other miscellaneous ramblings by Jonathan Crouch)Number of members: c. 80The Lesson: The internet is awesome and has a great deal of fun and readable content. It also fosters shameful amounts of self-indulgence and shameless self-promotion.
And in a surprise entry at Number 6 is my very own Facebook fan page, I suggest that you join it if you haven’t already, and invite all of your friends to it. The majority of the fan pages I have joined have been local bands or DJs who I am friends with, and the fan pages of Facebook are perfect for helping them keep in touch with their fan base (the fact that having a group of people being you can refer to as your fan base is wonderful in itself ) and publicising their events to people who may be inclined to see them. For evidence for fostering of self-indulgence and shameless self-promotion, look no further than the previous 1,000 or so words.
6 Lessons Learned from Fan Pages
The Internet, it truly is a fabulous thing. I use it daily; I imagine you use it daily. In fact I bet you’re on it right now. Anyway, I came across a superb site- a recommendation from my sister- this week: Stumbleupon.com, basically it is a website which directs you to other websites which people have recommended to it, when you’re bored of that particular site, click the “Stumble!” button and it will put you onto something else. The websites can be anything from web comics to psychological journals explaining quirks of human behaviour, from flash games to playlists of songs that make you happy. It really is excellent and shows you how good the Internet can be.
Unfortunately the internet can also be a place for rampant idiocy. I, like many people in the 21-35 bracket, harbour something of an addiction to Facebook, spending most of my free time on it- a fact that becomes even more concerning when I consider the abundance of free time that currently I have. Whilst doing what amounts to very little on Facebook, I’ve noticed that with the advent of fan pages there has a new selection of moronic bandwagons for people to jump on. So here are 6 lessons learned from Facebook fan pages:

Actor of the WeekendHugh grant
Our choice for this issue is one of our very own instantly recognisable and renowned
Hollywood actors, Hugh Grant.
Notting Hill (1999)
One of the films which set the standard for the now popular romantic comedy genre was this one. Travel bookshop owner William Thacker (Hugh Grant) is astonished when the most famous actress in the world, Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) wanders into his shop. After quite literally bumping into her again, they develop a growing friendship which becomes extremely difficult to conceal due to Anna’s global fame. Making his attempt to keep her interested even more likely to fail are an eccentric group of family and friends, and a dim yet lovable lodger, Spike (Rhys Ifans).
Mickey Blue Eyes (1999)
A great comedy movie always ensues when a character is taken completely out of their depth and comfort zone, and
it’s illustrated no less perfectly in Mickey Blue Eyes. Hugh Grant stars as Michael Felgate, a British Auctioneer who
unknowingly proposes to the daughter of a high ranking Mafia gangster. When pressured into helping the gang out
with a few favours, the FBI become involved and Felgate must save himself and his girlfriend in a tangled web of
planning and deceit amongst the people they know best.
About a Boy (2002)
About a Boy seems to stand out as one of Grant’s different films as his character departs from the usual polite and perfect gentleman he is always cast as. Will Freeman is a well-off bachelor living a life free from responsibility, dependencies and serious relationships. After finding out that dating single mothers suited his lifestyle well, he puts on a façade of also being a single parent to attend support meetings to find more eligible women. After agreeing to go on a date, he meets the woman’s son, Marcus who slowly become friends, as Will helps him to become a cool kid at school, and his life priorities change…
Named as This Weekend’s Film of the Year 2009, the Academy Award nominated, Up is released on DVD. With the insane premise of an old retired man flying his house across continents to fulfil a childhood promise to his wife, this film doesn’t restrict itself within the confines of a road movie. Once again Pixar subvert the traditional family unit; how many families do you know include a
talking dog and a giant bird named Kevin? The story primarily focuses upon their relationships and the true meaning of love. All this really highlights the joys and laughter in which the film can give, however the opening montage to the film is being regarded as some of the most powerful and jaw dropping bits of cinema ever made, never mind simply animation.
As Earth’s ever increasing population grows exponentially, a spaceship carrying 60,000 people to start a new civilisation is set on course for a new planet. Two of the astronauts, Bower and Payton, awaken from their long-term slumber in an amnesic state and bewildered as to where the thousands of crew members have disappeared
to. Whilst delving into the murky depths of the eerie spacecraft, Bower mentions Pandorum; a condition caused in suspended animation that induces violent and psychotic tendencies within an individual. The production team that brought us the Resident Evil films are also behind this tense psychological thriller, which despite its relatively poor box office performance, is a great watch.

THIS WEEKEND LONDON
A seldom find in today’s over commercialised industry, Hot Chip
are all about the music. Having found mainstream success with their first top 40 charting track, Over and Over, the London based quintet set upon a musical journey which will hopefully continue to develop and entertain us all.
Previous critics of Hot Chip give the opinion that the albums released so far have gone from developing their own style of music to repeating previous songs with new slants on them. When they responded with their third album, Made in the Dark, the sound shifted away from its predecessor with commercial success, yet critics were still adamant that the album itself was thirteen different versions of the same song.
I Feel Better could prove to be the bands answer to this lengthy criticism, as the sound is distinctively associated with Hot Chip, yet the song could easily find itself as a backing track for a range of artists, with a percussion rhythm more adventurous than those on previous albums.
One Life Stand emphasises the experimental nature behind Hot Chip, fusing an electro-dance foundation with steel pans to give a unique and playful quality to the album’s title track. The song Alley Cats, first penned after their most recent world tour, is both relaxing, yet full of energy and creativity, whilst Keep Quiet is influenced from 60s psychedelica and very atmospheric.
This one really is an album that you can’t
describe until you hear it. Tracks can easily be found on YouTube and Spotify, so go have a listen!Out now

ALBUM of the WEEKEND H o t C h i pONE LIFE STAND
Lady Gaga – The Fame Monster
The album that was supposed to be a re-launch, revamped, repacked and all the re’s you might be able to think up version of the previous successful album “The Fame” but, eventually thought to have been too expensive for a re-launch finally got the acknowledgement to be released as a follow up album titled “The Fame Monster”.Consisting of just 8 tracks in the offering to fans I wondered why bother? I must say though unlike its predecessor it has not been as successful even with collabos with superstar Beyonce on the single “Telephone” and the number chart topping
single “Bad Romance”.However the songs on this album which are few have a powerful blend of sounds that would make the average John and Jane stop and bob to the beats. Typical Gaga style all the way, I am sure all her fans are not disappointed with the offering of new tracks.Overall I still consider it a success considering the lapse in time between both albums. I do only hope other artistes do not follow the same route all in the name of staying relevant but from what I have seen of her recent performances consider this person gaging for her uK tour.
Ellie Goulding:
Our artiste for the weekend is Ellie Goulding simply for the fresh quirky style she brings to her song. The fact that she is a singer/songwriter and guitarist might have added to this but the fundamentals of the electronic instruments infused on her tracks coupled with her light quavery yet quintessential voice.Born in Hereford and grew up in Wales, the twenty some year old has come a long way from being unsigned to the release
her first single “Under the Sheets” in 2009 and a second single “Starry Eyed” released 2010 reaching No. 4 on the UK chart list. Currently now signed to Polydor Records and claiming a few accolades along the way winning the BBC Sound of 2010 and the Citic Choice award at the 2010 Brits Award. Her debut album Lights is geared to be released in March 2010 and a UK tour soon after. As far as new artistes come and go, this one is here to stay and is ready to storm the UK.

Three-star chef Gordon Ramsay's favourite food
is one that he shares with a lot of Britain - curry.
But, until now, he's never been to India to see
how the real thing is cooked. Accompanied by a
Channel 4 film crew, Gordon takes the culinary
trip of a lifetime to discover real Indian cuisine
and share this collection of over 100 of his
favourite Indian dishes. As you'd expect from a
Michelin-starred chef, Gordon brings his eye for
perfection and ability to judge flavours perfectly
to his exploration of Indian food and shows us
how to cook authentic, mouth-watering dishes
from all over this huge and varied country. He
visits Kerala deep in the South of India to bring
us spicy, coconut-based curries and travels to
colourful Rajasthan to learn about the creamy,
flavourful dishes of the North. Along the way
Gordon experiences the hugely different flavours
and spices from the different regions and absorbs
local cooking styles and traditions. Throughout
his culinary journey, Gordon selects the best
of the vast array of Indian spices, now readily
available in British supermarkets. He shows
us how to use these authentically to produce
a beautifully flavoured Indian dish. Gordon
Ramsay's Great Escape includes over 100 recipes
in the following sections: Everyday, Entertaining,
Quick Lunches and Healthy Dishes. Once
Gordon shows you how easy it is to put together
authentic Indian dishes, you'll never look back.
Cleo Quinn doesn't have the
greatest track record when it comes
to men, but now Will's come along.
Handsome and attentive, he could
be her Mr Right. Things are definitely
looking up for Cleo... apart from one
small problem with a rather large
ego. Johnny LaVenture, sculptor
extraordinaire and her personal
childhood nemesis, is back in
Channing's Hill and tormenting
her as if he'd never been away.
Meanwhile Cleo's sister Abbie has a
problem of her own – husband Tom
has become distant and withdrawn,
and she's determined to find out
why. But will the shocking truth
mean the end of their idyllically
happy marriage? The sisters are
about to discover that the past can
come back to haunt you, and that
love can flourish in the unlikeliest of
places…
Chrissie always believed that Richie
loved her, had loved her for all the
twenty-three years they'd been together,
loved their three daughters and their
house in Highgate and their happy,
lively existence. But if she really was
the love of his life, why had he never
given her the one thing that would
have made her life perfect? The ring she
wore was not a wedding ring, and it did
not bring her the security of marriage.
That belonged, still, to Margaret, back in
Newcastle where Richie had started off
as a musician, before he became famous.
Margaret and her son Scott never saw
Richie, and had never met the three
girls. They were his other family, not
mentioned but always in Chrissie's mind,
an obstacle to her complete happiness.
And then, suddenly and shockingly,
Richie is no longer there, and Chrissie
and the girls have to learn to manage
without him. The presence of the other
family becomes, all at once, impossible
to ignore - not least because they are
involved in Richie's will. Old resentments,
and feelings of abandonment and loss,
have to jostle with the practicalities of
money and property.
Clayton Miller's life is a mess. His
career as one of the country's best
comedy script writers has stalled and
his long term girlfriend has left him
for his ex best friend and ex writing
partner. Just when he thinks his life
couldn't get any worse, he commits
a spectacularly public fall from
grace and with the press hounding
him; his agent banishes him to the
middle of nowhere until the dust
has settled. At a remote country
house he meets Alice, a voiceover
artist who habitually goes to great
lengths to avoid telling the truth and
after agreeing to help out a friend,
by shopping and cleaning for the
unknown man staying at Cuckoo
House, she soon becomes suspicious
that her strange and obnoxiously
rude client has something to hide.
But equally so does she. When they
discover the truth about each other
they form an unlikely friendship,
but then Alice discovers Clayton has
betrayed her in the worst possible
way.
Olivier is a French aristocrat, the
traumatized child of survivors of
the Revolution. Parrot the son of an
itinerant printer who always wanted
to be an artist but has ended up a
servant. Born on different sides of
history, their lives will be brought
together by their travels in America.
When Olivier sets sail for the New
World, ostensibly to study its prisons
but in reality to save his neck from
one more revolution - Parrot is sent
with him, as spy, protector, foe and
foil. As the narrative shifts between
the perspectives of Parrot and
Olivier, and their picaresque travels
together and apart - in love and
politics, prisons and the world of art
- Peter Carey explores the adventure
of American democracy, in theory
and in practice, with dazzling wit
and inventiveness.
This devastating and inspiring book, by
one of the world's leading economic
thinkers, lays out not only the course of
the financial crisis which began in 2007,
but its underlying causes, and shows why
much more radical reforms are needed
than are currently being contemplated
if we are to avoid similar 'systemic' crises
in the future. It shows why the bailout
has been only marginally effective
and how it could have been much
more so, and outlines the enormous
opportunity - not yet taken - to design
a new global financial architecture. It is
highly critical of many of the actions not
only of George Bush's administration,
but also of Barack Obama's. It shows
why the bulk of the cost of recovery
should be borne by those in the financial
sector - not just for reasons of natural
justice, but for compelling economic
reasons also. More than any of this, it
reminds readers to think constantly
about what economies are for, and the
human purposes they serve. Freefall is an
instant classic, combining an enthralling
whodunit account of the current crisis
with a bracing discussion of the broader
economic issues at stake.

THIS WEEKEND LONDON
The individual movie franchises were excellent and combining the two was immense. Bringing the previous AvP game into the 21st Century required planning of an equally immense calibre. The result of this work: One of the best 3-way first person shooters out there. Having three conflicting sides allows each to have strengths and weaknesses against other types, forcing tactical decisions, which is what made the whole Pokémon game series so damn addictive.
The gameplay allows the choice of controlling the Aliens, the Predators or the Colonial Marines. Each campaign offers a slightly different feel and story to the game, whilst each story inevitably crosses and intertwines with the others to provide an overall plot.
The Predator mode is perhaps the most different in terms of gameplay, but most familiar from the films. The classic thermal imaging mode remains a key part in helping the Predator locate marines, but Aliens become extremely difficult to spot. They can however cloak themselves from view of the marines, but of course, the Aliens are able to infiltrate their guise.
The Alien mode is also fairly true to the movies, requiring the player to use the darker areas of the beautifully rendered environment to give cover to the attacks on their enemies. Whilst being able to locate enemies much easier, actually attacking them becomes exceedingly difficult, having only short range weapons to exterminate the Marines and the Predators.
Finally, the Colonial Marine mode is probably the one which will feel most natural to gamers, with a similar interface and system to Call of Duty and other orthodox first person shooters. What does make this different however is the aim of the mode, which again stems from the movie: to simply survive.
For gameplay, the various modes give the title a re-play value in addition to the various difficulty settings. From playing the pre-launch demo, the full release looks to be eagerly anticipated from movie and gamer fans alike. The story writing style and inclusion of references to the films will keep movie fans happy whilst the gamers will enjoy a brilliantly crafted game engine that brings together new technology with the nostalgia of its predecessor. Almost 10 years on from the first hack and slash title in the Dynasty Warriors series, Strikeforce, having already been launched on the Sony PSP makes an appearance on the PS3 and Xbox 360. Whilst at first glance, it seems that Strikeforce is simply a polished version of Dynasty Warriors 6 with a different storyline; it’s just not the case.
Downscaling a console game to portable isn’t as much of a challenge as upscaling the other way around. Fortunately, they’ve innovatively decided to merge another genre into the game, making Strikeforce a quasi-RPG. The game allows the player to level up and improve their character in the game, with a variety of activities in the town centres.
The game is available in single player,
but not as you’d expect. Venture off into the game solo and you’ll be accompanied by three AI controlled accomplices who can be directed as you see fit. Online multiplayer allows up to three friends to replace these computerised warriors.
One thing that the game does lack is the classic hordes of angry enemies riding upon horseback, which to put bluntly, does remove the essence of the previous games. The omission of split-screen co-operative mode is also quite bewildering.
Despite these drawbacks, it is nevertheless an enjoyable game aimed particularly as something different from the rest of the Dynasty Warriors series for loyal fans who have supported a decade of the franchise.

Sony HDR-CX105E:
Sony brings to us a new conventional full HD portable camcorder in the HDR-CX105E. But does having a small camcorder translate to really good video. Sony attempts to so by incorporating there Exmor technology which has been proven to perform quite well beyond all expectations. It has an 8gb flash memory built in which gives you about 1hr recording in full HD mode so investing in extra storage memory will be necessary and that option
comes in the memory stick pro duo which means you are likely to shed out a bit extra cash in contrast to the SDHC card type. For the semi pro it has not much to offer as you would expect but a mini Hdmi port does come in handy. The settings are accessible via touch screen control. It makes use of face detection for easy point and shoot recording. In daylight the images are fantastic and surprisingly good in low light as well which overall puts it at the top of its league.

Doing a stopover at Jonathan’s on a Friday night in London sounds like popping by your
mates to have a few drinks and a laugh before kicking out to the clubs right. Well actually that’s what it seems to be for most celebs that do pluck up the courage to do so but, obviously without the drinks but more laughs than your friend Jim could possibly muster. Jonathan Ross has really made Friday night something to look forward to if you didn’t plan to spend it cruising the night like I do. But obviously one can realise this with the throngs of celebs that drop by whenever they happen to be passing through London. The likes of Hollywood A list “Tom Cruise, Will Smith, rapper Jay Z, 50 cent, Amy Winehouse”, the list goes on and on like a scroll from a fictious lost city of somewhere.
Styled in a retro somewhat sixties design, the studio atmospheres look is cool and sazzy until Mr Ross steps onto the stage supported
by his odd band “Four Poofs and a Piano” introduced at the start, he sets about his thing by doing a brief stand up focused on the main tabloid sensations of the week. The show commences with introducing is guest with some light jokes at their expense. What makes the show what it is but the man himself who without effort charms you with his relentless unconventional humour. You never know what to expect from Jonathan Ross so most celebs make sure they come armed with their wits and charm. Quite right they should because sooner has he started and the topic takes on a life of its own with
the Ross antics flying through the air so much so Jonathan has to catch himself on most occasions. Between all that humour he touches on serious topics and finds a way make them relevant.I enjoy this show like most of you because it appeals to a wide range of people be it comedy, music, chat show, celeb gossip you got it all wrapped up in one. Although sadly the show is currently on its last run and like all good things we shall miss it. For this reason I say whenever you happen to be passing through London on a Friday, do a stopover at Jonathan Ross.
