1963-October
The Wunder von Lengede, in the October of 1963 29 miners were killed and a further 21 were trapped when a dam collapsed
flooding an iron mine in Lengede, West Germany. Local authorities lacked the necessary heavy recuse equipment to get to
the miners, with the nearest suitable equipment being 100 miles away. This disaster gave Gerry Anderson the idea for a show
about an international rescue organisation able to deploy specialised rescue equipment anywhere via supersonic aircraft.
1963
Gerry Anderson pitches Thunderbirds
to ITC.
1964-September
Production of Thunderbirds begins.
1965
Thunderbirds debuted in the UK on ATV with 26, 50 minute episodes.
1966-February
Series 2 airs, with only 6 episodes.
1966-August
Despite massive popularity in the UK and other
oversea territories, Thunderbirds is cancelled
due to the failure to sell to in the USA.
1966-December
The Thunderbirds movie “Thunderbirds Are Go!”
was given the green light before the airing of
the first series.
1968-July
Despite the box office failure of “Thunderbirds Are Go!”
the sequel “Thunderbird 6” is released.
1982-September
The Japanese studio Jin Studio release an anime
based on Thunderbirds “Thunderbirds 2086”. It lasts
for 24 episodes.
2004-July
The only live-action Thunderbirds movie
“Thunderbirds!” premiers. Film is a failure at the
box office. Gerry Anderson completely disliked the
film.
2015-April
50 Year after it debuts, a new CGI series of
Thunderbirds is released to positive reviews.
