Biology LabsCellular Energy Conversions(9B)
Cellular Transport (4B)
Focus Question – 9BAnimals release carbon dioxide
(CO2) in the process of respiration.
Focus Question – 4BA freshwater fish is adapted to a low salinity environment, and thus would
dehydrate if placed in saltwater. Water would flow from a region of greater concentration (inside the fish’s body) to a region of lesser
concentration (the saltwater environment.)
Lab 4B – Cellular Transport
A hypertonic solution is one that has a greater salt concentration (and therefore a lesser water concentration) than the normal cells of the
body. Cells in a hypertonic solution will shrivel.A hypotonic solution is one that has a lesser salt concentration (and
therefore a greater water concentration) than the normal cells of the body. Cells in a hypotonic solution will swell.
An isotonic solution is one that has the same salt concentration (and therefore the same water concentration) as the normal cells of the
body. Cells in an isotonic solution will stay the same.Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a cellular membrane.
Question 3
Regulating osmotic pressure is vital, because too much water can cause a cell to burst and too little water can cause a cell to shrivel. Either scenario can lead to cell death and possible tissue damage, or even
organ failure.
