Typically TICA is being published in English this time. Why? Because we have a great deal of international customers, and many exhibitors from abroad. Our customers from abroad lite-rally come to Aalsmeer from all four corners of the globe. Not just from France or England, but also from for instance the United Arab Emirates... Why do all these cus-tomers travel such a long way just to buy in the Netherlands? Read their stories in this magazine. We’ll also be hearing from our exhibitors: they introduce them-selves and tell us what makes them different from the rest.

To focus more on the international market and to attract more custo-mers, last year we had a presence at spring and summer fairs in Düsseldorf and Hamburg. We’d like to do more of this in the future.Germany is always teeming with

economic activity. Take Munich as an example. The Bavarian capital has a classical vibe about it, particularly at Christmas time. But there’s much more to see and discover than meets the eye. Every city has a blueprint in which different styles com-plement each other: classically elegant, modern, hip and trendy. TICA went into the city and found many Typically TICA locations and products in these styles. We have the same kind of variety and diversity in Aalsmeer within our complete and dynamic range of products. And that is precisely what TICA customers are after: dynamics and diversity, innovation and surprises.

...the leading buying centre, with around 175 different manu-facturers and importers of home, gift and garden products all under one roof. in 1995, about 15 entrepreneurs joined forces at a greenhouse on randweg in uithoorn. it wasn’t long before lots more businesses joined them, the floor space was vastly expanded and the name tica was estab-lished. since then, tica has grown into an efficient trade centre with a floor area of 20,000 m2.

tica is centrally located, a stone’s throw from the aalsmeer flower auction, and only 15 minutes away from Schiphol international airport and amsterdam.

we offer easy buying, both on and offline.

we are a professional trade platform where supply and demand come together.

this concept makes buying easy. with 175 exhibitors in a 20,000 m2 wholesale market, customers can pay for everything at a single, central payment desk.

tica exhibitors are manu-facturers, designers and importers that offer unique and distinctive collections. together, our 175 exhibi-tors provide a comprehen-sive, trend-setting range of products.

tica customers are national and international retailers in home, gift and garden products and interior designers on projects in fields such as hotels and catering. tica is a professional buying centre and maintains a strict admittance policy.

1 geometric shapesThe shapes are predominantly angular and straight: lots of triangles, honeycomb, irregular polygons and mathematical shapes. This can be seen in the designs themselves, but also in textures, fabrics and patterns.

2 new colour palettesInstead of lots of matching colours, the colour palette now also contains dissonants: bright shades next to a muted colour, or pastels combined with bright colours. Fluorescent colours are often used to accen-tuate. Beige-orange shades are coming back, as are coral reds, petrol and cool greens.

3 mixing materialsIt’s not just colours being mixed together in one product, but materials are too. Light woods are being used surprisingly often for this: wood with marble, wood with metal, wood with glass or wood with concrete. These striking contrasts create an exciting new look.

4 fading coloursThere aren’t very many proper patterns around at the moment. What you do see are fading colours - colour shifts that gradate from light to dark in a product, or from one shade to another. It’s an attractive effect, and also feels a bit like a pattern itself.

Page 31: TICA magazine autumn/winter 2013

Home stylist Marie-Gon: “This winter season’s three themes each have their own look. Choose the aura that suits your shop or business best: pick & mix. The first theme is a nice combination of aged fabrics, subdued colour tones and natural materials. Home comfort with a touch of nostalgia. Also, an oasis of calm in busy urban life. You can create atmosphere with 3D frame boxes, mini expos and travel souvenirs. You can add to this effect by using natural, outdoor elements, such as branches, plants and prints. That way, you can create an ‘in the city’ vibe.Everyone will love ‘Colourful detailing’, the second theme. The bright, cheerful colours and fresh patterns combined with the fashionable, colourful packaging create a happy look. Perfect for gift wrapping or adding highlights to your shop or shop windows.December is always associated with cosiness and parties. In Milan, I saw a lot of bronze and red copper. They are metals that can add a new touch of warmth and shine. They can create even more atmosphere with offblacks and metallic paint (in the background). That mix of materials with exquisite structures and shiny details sets the tone for the third theme: ‘mixed materials’.”

typically... EurolightWho Nancy Ilcken Where do we know you from? Our 400m2 lighting stand, with a wide range of lamps, lamp bases and lamp shades. What’s your style? We mainly sell lamps with a rustic look, which we import from Asia and European countries. And we have unique and trendy lamps too. We’ve also expanded our product range to include wall decorations such as wall panels, paintings and mirrors. Why should we buy at Eurolight? Our lamp bases and shades are all made exclusively for us. That’s how we distinguish ourselves and are able to keep displaying new models.

typically... Colours & GreenWho Peter Jongejan Where do we know you from? He owns Colours & Green bv, an importer and whole saler of high-quality silk flowers and plants. What’s your style? I would describe our style as ‘sellable and exclusive’. We aim to keep on finding new, memo-rable items that are both beautiful and sellable. Whether our collection is big or small, the end consumer has to really want these products. Why should we buy at Colours & Green? All our products match each other, which makes them a lot easier to sell. Terrific products like these sell themselves, but also have to be supplied quickly. Our team gives expert advice, makes sure the collection is all there and is presented as well as possible.

typically... Frames & PapersWho Jolande van de Schilde Where do we know you from? I’m the owner of Frames & Papers bv, impor-ter and wholesaler of gift products and specialist in wedding accessories. What’s your style? We mainly sell paper products. We designed them ourselves, with a focus on all the memorable moments in life, like a birth or a wedding. All in all, it’s a wide collection including guest books, ring pillows, small presents, gifts and envelope boxes. Why should we buy at Frames & Papers? Our products are all unique, original and functional.

ALICE, MARGRIET, SUSAN AND YOLA COME TO TICA REGULARLY. YOU MIGHT NOT THINK THAT IS ANYTHING SPECIAL, BUT IT IS. THEIR SHOPS ARE IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE, IN THE ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE, AND IN THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, OF ALL PLACES. WHY DO THEY TRAVEL SO FAR TO DO THEIR BUYING IN THE NETHERLANDS?

boutique margueriteIt is a matter of course for Margriet van Zaal to do her buying for Boutique Marguerite at TICA. She was born and grew up just around the corner. Her shop has been housed for the past ten years on the ground, first and second floors of a 400-year-old building in Cotignac, a village in the French department of Var. The premises have so many different little corners that Margriet has created lots of different looks, making it look more like a home than a shop.

What kind of customers buy at your shop? On the one hand they are local people who come to buy presents, and on the other hand they are well-to-do French people and second home-owners from various different countries who come to buy interior accessories. It’s nice that people respond positively to the building itself and also how it is decorated.

Why do you come to TICA? I like doing my buying at TICA, as it allows me to distinguish myself as the prices are reasonable and you are not constrained by a minimum order size from each exhibitor. At large trade fairs I often can’t meet the minimum purchase price. TICA on the other hand sometimes has limited quantities of products that I want to sell. But I have found a way around that problem! Before I set off for the Netherlands, I contact that particular exhibitor who then puts aside the right quantity at custo-mer service. That works fine!

What exactly can you find at TICA that you can’t find elsewhere? Pots, cushions, lighting, statues, furniture... All the things that my custo-mers say are so different in other shops.

What do you think of the service at TICA? Everyone is invariably helpful and kind. Your team has my compliments! That makes a buying trip a much more enjoyable experience.

all in one seasonAlice Calcasola-van der List is a Dutch Floral Designer who has been living in the UK since 1999. Her passion is to create atmosphere using natural materials and flowers in a very unusual way. Nature is her main source of inspiration in everything she does. On her visits home to the Netherlands she was inspired by the trend for ladies to make beautiful things for their home or garden. That’s why she set up a floral design company in 2001 and runs a range of workshops and courses in her studio in Letchworth Garden City, between London and Cambridge.

She also specialises in bespoke design work for weddings, funerals & corporate business. Following the growing demand for unusual and special products, Alice expanded the business in 2010 into her outbuilding and garage and opened her All in One Season shop from home.

What kind of customers buy at your shop? Local ladies from near and far, word-of-mouth customers and customers from all over the world on the All in One Season webshop.

Why do you come to TICA? The all-under-one-roof concept of TICA is unique and saves time. This is important for me as I normally have very limited time to do my buying in Holland.

What exactly can you find at TICA that you can’t find elsewhere? Typical Dutch products, new ideas and inspiration. All things floral: pots, vases and beautiful home accessories, all with a “touch of Dutch”.

What do you think of the service at TICA? Excellent service, always!

Does your company have its own webshop? Yes, have a look at allinoneseason.com.

art & flower‘A love of beauty’ is what inspired two friends from Lebanon, Yola Raad and Susan Trad, to set up their Art & Flower floral boutique in Dubai in 1999. Whenever they wanted to order flowers themselves they would struggle to get exactly what they were looking for. So that’s what moti-vated them to get started themselves, giving them a direct channel to express their creativity. They wanted to bring out new ideas and con-cepts, and they discovered that floral design is constantly changing and keeps up closely with interior trends. That resulted in a business that is much more than a flower shop. Yola and Suzy don’t sell bunches of flowers wrapped in cello phane: each and every flower or arrangement is presented as a true work of art.

What kind of customers buy at your shop? All kinds of people, mainly locals. They either come to the shop or order online. But our expertly arranged flowers and plants can also be found in corporate and commercial offices, restaurants, hotels, homes, weddings and many other events and spaces.

Why do you come to TICA? When we come to the Netherlands to buy stock, we combine TICA with a trip to the flower auction in Aalsmeer. We buy our flowers in 16 different countries, but nowhere else has a buying platform like TICA.

What exactly can you find at TICA that you can’t find elsewhere? Flower pots and vases in all shapes, sizes and materials, and also chande liers and candelabras. And all of it is good quality.

The company was started over 20 years ago by Angélique Clares-van Lint and Agustin Clares y Sánchez. Sustainability has always been something they have been aware of in running their business. Angélique explains: “Twenty years ago, manufacturers didn’t have a clue about sustainable production. Now that govern-ments, manufacturers, importers and shoppers know and want the same things, sustainability in the manufacturing process has become a real possibility at Rocaflor. In essence, standing together you are stronger, and only then can you truly come up with sustainable developments. We realise that more steps need to be taken in the sustainable manufacturing and packaging process, and in the future we will be continuing to give those steps our full effort and attention.

We are proud, though, of what we have already managed to achieve, such as our home interior fabric collection. Most of it is from India. We work with a producer there who gives sustainability paramount importance too. That has led to a well-balanced working relationship. The factory holds a range of ISO certifications and a

great team of staff who are treated with respect. They use natural and recycled materials and produce stunning designs. All the rugs, cushions and pouffes (see photograph) are made by hand or woven from sustainable, recycled mate-rials (wool, silk, hide, leather, denim and jute). Also, the colourings used to dye the fabric and leather are mostly natural, as are the basic materials used to strengthen the rugs.

Plans for the futureSustainability is the mission we set our-selves when putting together our collec-tions. With attention and respect for people and the environment. That means continuing to work using the basic prin-ciples of craftsmanship so that centuries-old trades are not lost. We also help people by giving them opportunities. That means offering just that little extra bit of help to establish a good base for life. For example, with financial support to help with schooling. Furthermore, we support a Mother Theresa shelter in India where children living on the streets can find a safe home. In this context, you are stronger when you stand together!

from mango wood. This is a sustainable source of timber.

The Mango tree grows relatively quickly but has a limited lifespan

for yielding the best fruit. Then the trees are cut down and

replaced every 7 to 15 years, with the barren tree providing

farmers with additional income when sold as timber.

Only naTuralThese books have a cover that has a sturdy look and authentic appearance, made from buffalo hide. Animals are not separately slaughtered to make this leather. The lining on the inside is made using collected antique sarees. The inside itself is recycled material too: paper made by hand from cotton rags. This traditional manufacturing process means that every book is unique.

a project that gives housewives the opportunity to earn a fair wage whilst

still looking after their children.

KinTaThis water bottle is made in a small pottery in the Philippines. The potter uses locallysourced raw materials and mixes the nontoxic colours himself. This ceramic collection, which is safe to eat from, is baked at a high temperature to make it dishwasher and microwave safe.

typically... TrendDesignWho Eric Sluis Where do we know you from? From TrendDesign, whole-saler in homewares and small fur-niture. And from my stand at TICA, right next to the Ticafé on the top floor. What’s your style? Our style ranges from timeless classics to daring eyecatchers. Or: classic and modern with a touch of extravagance. Together, this makes for a distinct, singular and stylish collection. Why should we buy at TrendDesign? We set ourselves apart by combining our classical and modern style with a dash of adventure.

typically... Evenaar GroothandelWho Carien de Visser Where do we know you from? Evenaar, for more than 25 years. I buy what I love: urban style, handmade fabric and old Indian furniture. Of course I only select commercial products that would fit in a Dutch home. What’s your style? New, old items! Lots of reused mate-rials: carpets made of fabric and leather cuttings, furniture made from old wood or broken-off lorry panels, or recycled glass. But we also have zinc utensils, cushions and bags made of old army tents. Why should we buy at Evenaar? Our products give your interior its own unique style, pure and authentic.

A mix of colour-ful oriental products, which include anything for table settings, fabrics, gift items, gadgets and jewellery. Aside from the bling range, we also have a cooler, more neutral range. Why should we buy at Colours of Asia? We focus on the client’s wishes. We’re service-driven and like to deliver custom-made products for a good price. For example, we’ll come along to your business to style all our products (orders of € 1,500.00 or more).

typically... Lighthouse TradingWho Monica van der Vorm Where do we know you from? The back row of stands in the ‘pink hall’ with an enor-mous range of home & gift products: from stationery and children’s gadgets to bunny lamps and bags. What’s your style? Well-designed or printed utensils. We don’t necessarily sell cushions, thermos flasks or pens... They’ll only fit in our product range if their design or print is gorgeous. Why should we buy at Lighthouse Trading? Our collection is very diverse and constantly renewing itself. We offer ‘niche’ items and lots of products that sell like hotcakes; both are essential in distinguishing oneself and surviving in retail.
