PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Welcome to SUMMER,

Oh my gosh! It’s hot. Well, it is supposed to be, Right?

Anyway, I want to tell you about a wonderful day I had Yesterday. Karan Fisher has been working with Luxford Elementary School this Winter and Spring.

With Karan’s instruction, Art teacher, Sarah Moss, 3 students and their parents worked on a Tee shirt Quilt. All the teachers helped tie the Quilt.

Yesterday the Quilt was presented to the 500 students. What a wonderful occasion!! The Quilt will hang in the school and represent the many clubs and events held at the school.

And on top of everything else Karan was named The Volunteer of the Year at Luxford. What an Honor for a woman who gave so much to these children.

Please congratulate Karan when you see her. You will get to see the Quilt at the July Guild meetings and get to meet Sarah Moss.

Hopefully we at the Guild will be involved in additional projects at Luxford.

Don’t forget Yard Sales at the July meetings. I know I have lots of things for my table. So bring $$$.

I look forward to seeing you in July.

Saturday Chapter Minutes June 6,2015

Linda Yeager, outgoing TQG Sat. Chapter Secretary23 members, 4 guests

Pam Traynham, Saturday Chapter Coordinator, opened the meeting at 10:00 welcoming all those present for this month's meeting. She reminded everyone that this is the last meeting for the outgoing slate, and welcomed all those that stepped up to assume positions for the next year's board. She is also encouraging members to bring a friend to the next meeting as a way to increase our membership.

Sue Troyan was present as a TQG representative to present the vote for the new TQG slate

for 2016-2017. The Yeahs carried the vote. New officers are:

Heather Hancsak for Coordinator,

Rosemary Rooney for Programs,

Renee Starling as Secretary,

Ann Walls as Treasurer/Membership,

Christina Hunt for Librarian, and

Sybil Magrill as Member at Large. Welcome ladies!

Heather Hancsak (our new Program Coordinator) reviewed this past years Spring Fling and stated that we are already beginning to plan next years event--most likely in mid April. If anyone would like to volunteer in any way for 2016, we will start serious planning later in the Fall. More info to follow in a couple of months.

Pam again clarified info regarding the soda can pop-top collection for Shriner's Hospitals. We are only collecting the part you put your finger through to open the can--all other parts are not pure aluminum. This does NOT include other cans that have a pop top as they are generally part steel. If in doubt, use a magnet; steel attracts, aluminum doesn’t.

Of note, Davis Main donated the quilt he used as part of his "nontraditional four-patch" program last month to the Virginia Quilt Museum in Harrisonburg. It was sold for the grand sum of $175.00. Our members' generosity knows no bounds at times!

A reminder that next months Saturday chapter will be meeting on July 11th. The "program" will be our annual garage sale. If you are going to be selling on the 11th, we are encouraging you to please arrive at 9am to set up your table. Also,

remember to bring small bills for change for those with money to burn! Although the sale will primarily be quilting related, we also have members with other interests (heresy!!) so items that would interest crocheters, embroiderers, etc can be offered.

The June program was presented by Pam and was our annual "Sewing for Others" presentation. She distributed information listing many programs and organizations that are appreciative of our donations: whether they be quilts for raffles; events that support and/or promote quilting; empower women in developing countries by teaching them sewing skills that benefit their families and villages; comfort ailing children or military members in hospitals or animals in shelters. She encourages us to keep our horizons broad, to not only donate your time and skill to those far away, but to also consider those in your community: a friend at work or attending your church that may be going through a tough time, a military member serving near or far, your local PTA as a fund raiser, an Alzheimer's unit nearby. You can always contact Pam if you would like to be put in touch with any organization and she will offer suggestions that will fill your needs.

A brief Show and Tell ended our morning. We had a small group of ladies that stayed and worked on their projects before ending the day around 3pm.

PROGRAMS – Ann Walls.

I am very pleased the Pat Carney was elected at your program chair. She is very enthusiastic about the job and I know she will bring interesting programs to the guild.

The board approved a program for November and I think will be very compelling. Phyllis Lawson and she has written a book entitled, Quilt of Souls. (website: http://quiltofsouls.net/). It is about a quilt made by her grandmother that tells the story and her family. She her website for more details.

Cheryl See’s workshop in August is wonderful opportunity for learn hand quilting or to add to your skill. . Please do not delay sending in your form.

AUGUST 2015. Cheryl See will be here to give presentations to both the Day and Night Chapters and to conduct a workshop called “Innovative Hand Quilting” on August 8. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLc3Apbr92E She is known for her paper piecing and her hand quilting. She won awards for both. The Registration Form and supply list for her workshop are attached. Her web site is www.cseesquilts.com. I had the pleasure of visiting Cheryl See in her home and seeing many of her lovely quilts hanging on her walls. I was thoroughly impressed. She has a unique approach and I think we would all benefit from her perspective. Many hand quilters tend to go with the straight lines, she gives techniques for many options during this workshop. Also, I asked Cheryl See if her workshop was for experienced quilters or if people who had never hand quilted could also attend. This was her response: “Yes they can Ann. I am fine juggling different skill levels. Students can watch the

progression of more experienced quilters as well.” Here is a UTUBE link to an interview with her: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLc3Apbr92E

BTW she is TQG member Jackie Gaskins’ daughter.

OCTOBER 2015. Jane Hall was scheduled to come to our guild several years ago but had to cancel due to her husband’s illness. We have, at last, rescheduled her visit. She will conduct a workshop called Pineapples Plus on October 17. Registration will be open in August 2015. Night chapter lecture: Painless Pieced Borders. Day Chapter lecture: Firm Foundations Updated. Her web site is http://www.janehallquilts.com/index.php

NOVEMBER 2015. Phyllis Lawson will talk about a quilt made by her grandmother that tells the story about her family. She has written a book about the quilt entitled Quilt of Souls that is available on Amazon. She will have copies of the book for $15 and it is also available through Kindle. The presentation will be the same for both Day and Night Chaptersa; so, you can pick which meeting is most convenient or come to both.

SEPTEMBER 2016. We are sharing expenses with the Peninsula Piecemakers Quilters’ Guild (PPQG) to bring Linda Hahn to our area. Linda will give two presentations to each of our guilds and PPQG is sponsoring two workshops. One during the day on September 8 and another on Saturday September 11, 2016. More details to follow. Her web site is www.froghollowdesigns.com. She is known for the NY Beauty.

Innovative Hand Quilting by Cheryl See Supply List for Workshop

• ¾ yard of fabric or a fat quarter for quilt top; I prefer a gradated fabric; if you quilt with a hoop, you may prefer the larger piece of fabric or baste fabric on all sides of the fat quarter.

• ¾ yard of backing fabric; I prefer a busy print with a looser weave

• Batting--18” square, low loft of your choosing • Batting scrap--approximately 12” square for Trapunto • Yarn- any color that will not show through your chosen

fabric for quilt top and backing • Needles— between needles and large eyed needles for

yarn • Straight pins • Quilter’s safety pins for basting • Thimbles for finger and thumb • “Thimble” for under finger if desired. The “thimble” for

under finger is any product that you use to protect your finger under the quilt and have a preferred product. There are spoons, metal, sticky to your finger tip thimbles, thick tape. This is not necessary and I will bring in examples.

• Scissors--for fabric and paper • Thread--bring a variety of colors to match and

compliment/contrast your quilt top; hand quilting thread is preferred

• Pen for taking notes • Notepad for drawing and notes • Pencil and marking tool that will show on chosen

FOR TRAVELERS TO D.C.

Any one in the DC area should plan a visit to Dumbarton House [ NOT Dumbarton Oaks] a small historic property in Georgetown.Visitor information: http://dumbartonhouse.org/

A QUILT FULL OF POSEYS AND PROVENANCE

One quilt, nine dresses, and a tradition spanning time and place. In 2015 from April to Labor Day, Dumbarton House will display the “Posey Quilt," an early 19th century American pieced quilt made of silk dress fabrics from a variety of early American women and Posey family members. Onpublic view for the first time in a dedicated exhibition, the quilt includes fabric squares from the dresses of Martha Washington, Nelly Custis, and thquilt's creator, Mary Alexander Posey, who married Thomas Posey in 1784.

The exhibition will highlight the eight women believed to have owned the dresses used in the quilt,

as well as the Posey family and its long tradition of passing the quilt down from mother to oldest daughter; a tradition which moved the quilt across North America for generations until it was donated to Dumbarton House in the early 1960's. The quilt has small numbers on various squares which correspond to the fabrics of the women’s dresses. A muslin key on the lower left corner of the backing matches the numbers of the fabrics with their owners. According to the key, the quilt includes fabric from the dresses of "Betty Washington Lewis, Nellie Custis, Mary Alexander (Thornton) Posey, Martha Washington, Lucy Posey," and a “Mrs. Beverly, Mrs. Fairfax, and Mrs. William Thornton." The exhibition will also examine historical uses of silk and textiles in Federal America.

News from the Virginia Quilt Museum

Once again, the Virginia Quilt Museum (VQM) has assembled four fabulous quilt exhibits that will thrill the novice to the experienced quilter. The exhibits range from Antibellum selections from the Museum’s collection to the contemporary works of Caryl Bryer Fallert.

Nestled in the picturesque Shenandoah Valley, the Museum is the perfect blend of art, heritage, and the social culture of Virginia.  Established in 1995, VQM is dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and nurturing Virginia's quilting heritage and features a permanent collection of nearly 300 quilts. Visit the website http://www.vaquiltmuseum.org/ to see the schedule and plan a road trip to Harrisonburg.

After visiting the museum, spend a day sampling the richness of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Trendy restaurants, museums, art galleries and QUILT SHOPS are located within minutes of the Museum.

VQM is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and is funded by admission fees, gift shop sales, special programs and donations from lovers of quilting like you! TQG is a long-time supporter of VQM. One of the Museum’s fund raising programs is an on-line auction, “Little Quilts, Big Talents”. Several of our members have donated quilts that have been included in the auction. This year, in addition to donations by individual members, we would like to donate a “Batik Basket”, from the Tidewater Quilters’ Guild, that will be included in the auction. All

of our members are invited to bring batik fat quarters to the meetings in July, August and

September. A member of the guild will be available to collect your donation.

All proceeds from this event support the Virginia Quilt Museum. We hope you will donate several fat quarters and also bid on an item to help the Museum continue its mission of celebrating Virginia's quilting heritage.

Thank you for your support!

Many thanks to all who joined Kathi Rokitski at the workshop we had at Spring Fling! By all reports, everyone had a great time and six lovely quilt tops were completed that day, with another almost done! (We were in Wimberley, Texas, enjoying a visit with family on the Blanco River.) Those quilts are now "in the pipeline", on their way to or already at quilters, soon to be finished and on their way to deserving service members.

Our contact at Landstuhle is keeping us appraised of the needs there, and based on what she is telling us, we will probably be offering block kits in the fall. In the meantime, based on what information she sends and what happens in the next few months, we may be reappraising our direction. She has repeatedly expressed great appreciation to and for not just the quilts we have sent but for you, the quilters of TQG, who have been so dedicated to our wounded service members over the years. The time (and money) spent, the love and kindness sewn into every quilt sent has been a blessing to not only the men and women who have received our quilts, but to the nurses, doctors and clergy who have attended to our wounded so faithfully, reminding them in a real and tangible way that people remember them and care. Know that those blessings will continue warming hearts, soothing spirits and healing wounds for years to come. Your efforts are appreciated! Thanks for doing your best work!
