    Fall 2005

Its the end of our seventh season as the owners of

Timberline Gardens. Each year just gets better

and better thanks to YOU, our loyal customers.

Thank you so much for your patronage, and as al-

ways, we love to hear your ideas, requests and cri-

tiques so that we can continue to serve you better.

We are proud to be a retail outlet for High Country

Gardens in Santa Fe. Most of the plants in their cata-

log are available through Timberline Gardens. We also

carry their YUM YUM MIX fertilizer and soil condi-tioner which is favored by gardeners across the West.

Wow, its been 20 years since I graduated from CSU.

There was a lot of buzz at that time about the symbi-

otic relationships between plants (especially trees and

shrubs) and certain fungi called mycorrhizae. These

fungi are found in most natural plant communities.

Researchers found that the growth of plants in nurs-

eries could be greatly enhanced if the fungi were in-

troduced to the young plants. It also helped them resist

other bad fungi. Now, the home gardener or landscaper can buy

Myke, a laboratory culture of mycorrhizae to add to

their trees and shrubs at planting time. What a dif-

ference it makes! You might even try adding it to pre-

viously planted plants that arent thriving and see if it

makes a difference. (See coupon for Myke on the

back page.) I think this will increase survivability tre-

    mendously.

I hope you have a great fall season!

    Happy gardening,Kelly Grummons

The gardeners at Timberline Gardens are passionateabout organic gardening and fall is the most impor-tant time to apply organic fertilizer. Our customersreport that they have such healthy lawns and gardens

since theyve been using ALPHA brand fertilizers. Thealfalfa-based formulas are rich in micronutrients-just

what our barren soils need!Once you have your lawn on a program of fertiliza-

tion with ALPHA, youll see very few fungal diseaseswhich will save you big bucks on fungicides. ALPHAenergizes the healthy microbes in the soil and makesthe whole soil ecology work better. It also feeds theearthworms which are natures aerators! The healthierthe worms, the more air tunnels in the soil and thedeeper the grass roots can go. Deep rooting givesdrought resilience.

    Special Events

Theres no better end to your winter blues thanbeing surprised by the flowers of tulips, daffo-dils and other spring blooming bulbs. Kids loveplanting bulbs too!

WHY SHOULD I BUY BULBS AT TIMBERLINEGARDENS INSTEAD OF THE DISCOUNT STORE?

We carry only top-sized bulbs from Holland. Some-times bulbs at discount stores are of lesser sizeand dont flower the first year. Also, our horticul-turists can help you choose the best varieties for

your situation. Perhaps you have problems withdeer, squirrels or high altitude issues. Whateverthe situation, we can help. Do the people at the

big box stores know the answers? Usually not.Timberline Gardens has a wonderful selection

of spring flowering bulbs that you can buy rightnow! Its best to stock up now while supplies aregood then hold them in a cool, dry place (base-

ment, pantry, etc.) until its cool enough in Octo- ber to plant them. Be sure to incorporate somebulb fertilizer with each bulb to ensure maximumperformance.

If you like forcing bulbs to bloom in pots in winter, our horticulturists can help you choosewhich varieties are best. Try paperwhite narcis-sus, hyacinths and crocus. (see coupon for bulbs). If you have hard soil and have had trouble plant-ing bulbs deep enough in the past, try a bulb au-ger. This drill-like device is attached to a heavyduty electric drill and makes the planting of larger

    bulbs easy and fun.
