Drive DeweededOn a warm Sunday afternoon, Time bank members, helped Denise de-weed her drive and front garden.

Denise who is phobic of Bees and Wasps had been too frightened to go out and attempt the clear the jungle that was claiming the outside of her home.

Time banking in Tameside trimmed the hedges, de-weeded, trimmed, swept and cleared the drive and garden and now Denise and her partner Graham don’t have to worry about it anymore.

Crochet WorkshopDenise, one of our members ran a Saturday morning crochet workshop, where a group of people learnt the basics of crochet. There was a wide range of abilities which Denise handled extremely well. The group were very impressed with the hand-outs she had put together and examples of Denise’s previous crotchet work, this has led to many requests for one to one sessions.

Top tips and ideas were free flowing and everyone went home with new projects in mind. Barbara was top of the class and that inspired after the workshop that she went home and crotched a glasses case over the weekend.

Gardeners, are you ready? The summer is finally on the horizon and the gardening requests are coming in thick and fast. Here’s a list of some of our current garden requests:

• Help with Grass edges and digging

• Second coat of paint on outdoor fence

• Driveway clearing

• General gardening

• Advice on starting a vegetable patch

If you think you can help, please give us a call!

James, one of our teenage members, was eager to clean Jean’s windows as he has a new toy! The window vac really helped speed up the task with excellent results. Jean, who had a fall and broken her shoulder, was unable to clean them herself, so was really impressed with James’ hard work and the sparkling windows!

What is Reiki?Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

Would you like to find out more? We are holding a very informal, friendly workshop run by one of our members, Fiona. This will include Questions and Answer and ‘taster’ session

Hyde Park’s first Orchard Pop Up KitchenOver 20 people helped out with weeding in the community orchard in Hyde Park and were rewarded for their efforts with a healthy lunch, which everyone helped prepare. This was made from locally sourced products (including honey made from the park’s bees). The event was a joint initiative between community food enterprise, Operation Farm and Time Banking in Tameside.

The Orchard Pop up Kitchen was created and organised by Ali Shockledge, Board Member of Operation Farm; with the aim of developing skills in gardening and cooking in an outdoor setting.

Alison said, It was a really successful day, the sun shone, everyone worked hard and I hope

we demonstrated how to bring together low cost, seasonal and healthy ingredients in a fun way.

Chair of Hyde District Assembly who attended echoed this stating, the food was superb; it was great seeing community members mucking in together. Events like this are fantastic.

Our Time Bank Country WalksWe have had 3 fantastic walks in the past 3 months.Firstly, in April, Robert & Pat organised a walk around Chadkirk, a historical area in Romiley. The walk went really well, the weather was kind to us and Robert was well prepared with lots of historical facts about the area. There was lots of laughter and fun and the children enjoyed running around, especially Charlie who was constantly climbing!

Towards the end of the walk we visited the farm cafe and enjoyed a hot drink and a chat while the children visited the animals. On the way back to the car park we detoured to view Stockport Hydro. This is a renewable energy scheme at Otterspool Weir on the river Goyt near Marple. It is Greater Manchester’s first community owned hydro-electric project.

In May, Keith & Barbara led a lovely walk around ‘Great Wood’ in Broadbottom. Again the weather was fantastic and we found out so much about this beautiful, secluded area. We ended the walk in the newly refurbished Lymefield Tea Rooms, which was also full

of history of the local dairy farm. A thoroughly enjoyable experience was had by all!

Just recently, Eileen from our Denton South Time Bank, led our third country walk. This was into and around Reddish Vale Country Park. The weather was superb! This walk focused on the wildlife and nature of the area, walking around the fishing lakes with ducklings and other birds, and then a wildlife butterfly meadow. It is amazing the wealth of nature we have on our doorstep!

We would like to say a HUGE ‘Thank You’ to Robert, Pat, Keith, Barbara & Eileen for organising such great events, it was very much appreciated by everyone!

Would you like to organise something for other Time Bank members? We are looking for ideas for social activities. It could be a workshop, hosting a games event, leading a walk, etc,. Elaine, Julie and Sasha would love to hear from you and help turn your idea into reality (within reason though!) Please contact us on the usual numbers.
