T his summer, Longmont-area youth will get thechance to experience sever-al of the opportunities the

Colorado outdoors has to offer. St.John the Baptist Catholic School willhost a hiking and outdoor adventuresummer camp to give kids a basicunderstanding of hiking, cycling andfishing.

“We are trying to get kids outsideand give them some ideas of thingsto do other than playing videogames all summer,” said Mike Col-ley, who is the physical educationteacher at the school. He will be run-ning the camp this summer along-side his wife.

The camp will run the week ofJune 24-28, from 9 to 11 a.m. eachday.

St. John’s Vice Principal MaryWellems said registration for thecamp will likely begin shortly afterthe school’s spring break, which be-gins April 8. The $50 camp will beopen to any children in grades threethrough six. For more information, call 303-776-8760 or visit http://johnthebaptist.org.

Colley plans for campers to spendthe first couple days hiking RabbitMountain and Hall Ranch, where hecan teach them about the flora andfauna in those areas. He also plansto teach them about wildernesspreparation and safety. Later in theweek, they will take bike rides onLongmont greenways. He will takecampers fishing on the last day ofthe camp.

Campers will be welcome to bring

their own gear, but aside from thebicycles, everything will be pro-vided.

Colley stressed the importance ofgetting youngsters out of the houseat a young age.

“If (the campers) get out now andunderstand that being outdoors canbe fun, it will help them throughouttheir lives,” Colley said.

This camp was actually a long

time in the making, according toWellems. She said she and Colleytalked about it a couple of years ago,but it was not practical because ofthe time Colley was spending withhis family.

“We‘ve been trying to figuresomething out to get the kids out-side,” Wellems said. “We’ve beenhashing this out for two years now. This year we decided that it is agood time.”

Colley served as a park ranger be-

fore he became a teacher at St.John’s. He hopes he can share hisown passion for hiking and biking tocreate enthusiasm for the outdoorsamong the campers.

“My goal is to reach out to thekids and have them enjoy the wilder-ness as much as I do,” Colley said. “Ijust want them to come away with anunderstanding that we live in Colo-rado, and it’s a beautiful state, andwe have so many opportunities soclose around Longmont.”
