Giving a pet as a present seems like a great idea, butshoppers might want to give it more considerationbefore giving a gift that is such a considerableresponsibility. A puppy at Christmas or a bunny atEaster may be given with good intentions, but that well-meaning sentiment can easily backfire, ending with thepet being given up for adoption when recipients dontfeel up to the task of raising a pet. In such instances, thecompanion animal pays the steepest price.

Though it often is, buying a pet should not be animpulse purchase. You see sad eyes looking back at youfrom behind a cage door and want to give that animala new home. However, introducing an animal into afamily is not a decision to take lightly. You must factorhow well the pet will fit in with the family dynamic. Doschedules allow for quality time spent with the animal?Is it a financially good time to care for an animal thatwill cost money? Are you aware of how long the petwill live? Making those big decisions for a person onthe receiving end of your well-intentioned gift may be

crossing a line. Would you want to have such a life-changing decision made for you?

Furthermore, the holiday season is not one ideallysuited for making careful decisions. People are oftenswept up in emotions and even stress, and shoppersmay not be thinking rationally.

The hectic nature of the holiday season can be adifficult time for a pet to grow acclimated to itsnew environment. He or she may be frightened toassimilate or take longer to settle down. Pets often need

several weeks of quiet and constant care to becomecomfortable in their new environments. Here are someother reasons why the holidays are not a good time fornew pets.

Holiday visitors may frighten the new pet and he orshe may become weary of strangers at the outset.

The activities in the household may pose safetyhazards for the young animal. An abundance of richfoods and various decorations could be ingested,potentially causing illness.

New pets should be carefully supervised aroundchildren to see how they behave. A child may not beaccustomed to handling a puppy or kitten and couldinjure the animal. Similarly, the pet may be skittishand lash out at the child. Adults busy with holidayobligations may be easily distracted and miss how theirchild is interacting with the new pet.

Once the glow of the holidays wear off, childrenmay be disillusioned with the new responsibility thathas fallen into their hands. They may not like the

responsibility that comes with being a good pet owner.

Reputable pet breeders and animal shelters often discourageindividuals from adopting or purchasing pets as holiday gifts.Many organizations and animal businesses require a carefulvetting of potential pet parents to ensure the animal will beplaced with a family and in a home that is suitable.

Animal welfare groups warn that an estimated 50 percentof pets adopted during the holidays end up right back atshelters. This can scar the pet. Avoid the temptation of giving acompanion animal as a present. If it is your intention to gift ananimal, talk to the gift recipient and discuss the pros and consbeforehand. Then you can work together and make the rightdecision for all parties involved, including the pet.

Iredell County Toys for Tots coordinator Vivian Meletisbelieves there is no greater satisfaction than bringinga smile to a childs face and hopes that residents willcontinue to help make Christmas possible for children inthe community again this year.

Each year, the U. S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots Programcollects new, unwrapped toys during the months ofOctober, November and December to distribute thosetoys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in thecommunity. In Iredell County, the number of familieswho have participated in the program has more thandoubled since 2010, when 1,850 youngsters were served.

Last year, we helped 3,777 kids and requests are alreadypouring in, she said. We already have 230 new childrenthat we have not served in previous years.

Meletis thinks that the number is on the rise becauseorganizations that have been able to help in the past areno longer financially able to.

We arent sure if people arent able to give like theyused to or if they have changed the organizations theysupport, but weve had to assist more organizations thanever before, she said. Last year, we assisted the SalvationArmy during their campaign because they had more than200 children that werent picked from their angel treesand they were out of funds to buy gifts.

Collection boxes for this years toy drive will be set outaround the community on November 1, with more than100 boxes set up throughout the county. Meletis hopes

to see more early donations this year, as the toys need to bedistributed by December 14.

Most of the time, people tend to donate closer to Christmas,she said. We appreciate any and all things that we get forthe children, but its especially helpful for us to get the toysorganized and ready before the children go on their Christmasbreak from school.

Meletis added that any toys they receive after the deadline gotoward their inventory for the following year, but that it leavesthem having to raise more money for this years presents.

God always provides, though, and every year we are able tomeet our goal, she said.

Giving children a special Christmasto remember has been the goal of afundraiser begun in 1973 by Mooresville

resident Don Chapman. As a college student inTennessee, he started building woodentoys for children. Chapmans effortscontinue today through his nonprofitorganization, One Special Christmas,which is marking its 25th anniversaryof building furniture to auction -- alongwith other donated items to raise money to purchasetoys for underprivileged children. After college, Chapman got a job teachingat Central Piedmont Community College and he

engaged his students in helping to build toys forchildren at Christmas. In 1989, he decided thatinstead of giving the wooden toys to the children, heand his volunteers would build furniture and a logcabin, which would be auctioned off and the moneyused to buy toys that the needy children had on theirwish lists.Even after Chapman was no longer a full timeinstructor at CPCC, he continued teachingwoodworking and building cabins with the help of

others, with the money going to makeChristmas a special time for others.Chapman died in 2003.

Without him around, they were not ableto continue with the log cabins, said hisdaughter, Emily Valenti. But the buildingof handmade furniture continues, withthe Charlotte Woodworkers Associationbeing a big source of those donateditems, Valenti noted. Leadership changes had to be made

with the fundraiser and in 2008, Valenti and herbrother, Brendon Chapman, joined others on theboard of directors to be a part of continuing thatdream of their dads to help children. There had been

concern for how this fundraiser would continue intothe future, Valenti said, but the auction -- now inits 25th year -- will continue this year as in the past,along with a new online pilot program to reach needychildren in the Mooresville Graded School District. Normally reaching out of town to childrenin some of the more impoverished counties of NorthCarolina, this new program will help local childrenhave a special Christmas as well. Handmade furniture, a weeks stay at a log cabin, andother donated items will be a part of the items that attendeesto the auction can bid on. The website will also direct folks how to donateitems for the auction or by logging onto the site and choosingMooresville Graded School District, you can start a fundraisingpage or donate to someone who has a page and make theChristmas wishes of local children come true. The names of children in need are referred by schoolsand counselors, Valenti said. Children who might fall throughthe cracks and not receive anything, she noted. Those involvedwith One Special Christmas want these children to knowthat someone cares about you, she continued. And theywant them to receive not just something (for Christmas)but something special to make you feel you are special and

worthy. Once the funds are raised and the gifts are bought,a wrapping party is held at Broad Street United MethodistChurch in Mooresville and then One Special Christmasvolunteers deliver them. A church in the town where the presents are deliveredusually hosts a party for the children and their parents. Duringthe party, Valenti noted, her brother Brendon will tell thechildren that they are cared about, and he shares the story ofthe original St. Nicholas and how he loved Jesus and childrenand lets the children know that this is why they are giving themgifts. He shares that we love Jesus and you too. Jesus is thebest gift of all. Not only can they share gifts, but they canshare the gospel with the children, Valenti said. marches and rolls down Main Street Mooresville. Scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 26, the parade will kick off at 3 p.m.Thousands of spectators come to watch from along the sidewalks all along Main Street as the marching bands, floats

and much more go past. The parade wraps up with a jolly Ho, Ho, Ho and a wave from Santa Claus. The paradestarts at North Main Street, continuing down Main Street and ends in the parking lot of Merinos home furnishings.

I love working with sprinkles because theyre notonly delicious, theyre so visual too. Of course you canscatter them over cakes, but you can also swirl them intowaffles, embroider them on cookies or do any number

of creative things with them that look great for theholidays, says Jackie Alpers, a photographer and authorof the new cookbook Sprinkles! Recipes and Ideas forRainbowlicious Desserts.

For a beautiful and delicious batch of edible ornamentsyou can hang on your tree or use to adorn your home,follow this recipe from Alpers for Windowpane Cookies:

Ingredients 1 2/3 cups all-purpose our 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt

1 stick unsalted butter, softened 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar 1 egg at room temperature, beaten 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract Approximately 1/2 cup various sanding sugars, sorted bycolor. (Clear hard candies, like Jolly Ranchers can be usedinstead. Just sort by color into plastic bags, seal and use ahammer to crush the candies into bits.)

In another bowl, cream butter and sugar with an electric mixeron medium, until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Mixin flour mixture until dough is smooth and firm. Divide dough in half and shape into two 1/2-inch-thick disks.Cover them in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line baking sheets withparchment paper. On a lightly oured work surface, roll dough to a thickness of1/4 inch. Cut out shapes using a larger cookie cutter and thenuse smaller cutters to remove windows from those shapes.

Arrange cookies about 1 inch apart on prepared baking sheets. Fill cookie windows with sanding sugars or crushed candypieces. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until edges start to turn golden,rotating sheets halfway through baking time. Place sheets onwire racks to cool for a few minutes before gently removingcookies with a metal spatula. Let cookies cool completelyon wire racks. Store between layers of wax paper to preventsticking in an airtight container for up to one week.To turn the cookies into holiday ornaments, use a bambooskewer or chopstick to poke a hole about 3/4 inch from the topof each cookie before baking. Christmas spirit radiates from the inside out at SandyHolcombs house on McCrary Road in Mooresville, withnearly every square inch of her home and yard decoratedwith holiday trees, snowmen, reindeer and of course, SantaClaus himself.

Most impressive, however, is Holcombs collection ofminiature Christmas houses, which reside in a four-storydisplay near the front window in her home. At night,

passersby can see the spectacular lighted display with tinyhouses, banks, shops, churches, barbers and grocery stores,all set up with loving care.

I started collecting in 1979 as a tribute to my mom, wholoves Christmas as much as I do, Holcomb said. Shedecorated to the max at our home when I was growing upand I just picked up where she left off.

Today, Holcomb has more than 60 miniature buildingsand is still adding to the display each year, with most of thehomes and shops given to her by her mother as a gift. She

rearranges the tiny structures each year to squeeze in evenmore and the village truly appears to be a tiny, bustlingtown.

When I start setting it up, I dont feel like I am full-size,she said. I feel like I am one of the tiny townspeople andwhen I decorate the village with snow when its all set up, Ising Let It Snow. Its so much fun.

When trying to decide which home was her favorite,Holcomb had to give it some thought. I really like themall, she said. But I think my favorite is the florist.

The tiny village almost suffered a disaster this year, butluckily, Holcomb was able to salvage the town. I wasSkyping with my grandbaby who lives in Alaska to show herthe village, and I happened to look behind me and the townwas tilting at an angle, she said. I was laughing and sayingthe town had an earthquake.

started to melt due to the heat of all the lights in thedisplay.

I had to get under there and wedge some woodenboards underneath so it wouldnt collapse, she said. Itcould have been a disaster.

Each year, Holcomb has a party at her home for friendsand family to look at her Christmas displays set upthroughout the house.

Everyone seems to really enjoy the village and looking atall the things Ive collected over the years, she said.

Each room, from her kitchen to the living room to eventhe bathroom has Christmas decorations that light up,sing and dance. Most of her decorations have been givento her as gifts or salvaged over the years.

My husband says he cant go to a room without

something waving or singing at him, she said with alaugh.

Holcomb said her Christmas decorations take six weeksto set up. Some of the dcor is from her mother andbrings her fond memories of when she was a little girl.

I plan to keep decorating and adding to the displaysas long as my health lets me, she said with a smile. Itmakes me feel like a kid.

Ask when the tree was cut down.Precut treesmay be cut down weeks before theyre sold. So if yourebuying a precut tree, chances are the tree was cut downmuch earlier than you think. This doesnt mean the treewont make it through the holiday season, but a treethat was cut several weeks ago should have some of itsbottom trunk removed before its placed in the stand.This will make it easier for the tree to consume water.This step likely isnt necessary if the tree was cut downthe same day you bring it home.

Have the tree shaken before taking it

home.A tree should be shaken in a shaker before youput it in your car and bring it home. A shaker removesany debris or dead needles from the tree, which can saveyou the trouble of cleaning up all of those dead needlesfrom your living room floor later on.

Have the tree wrapped before taking ithome.A tree should also be wrapped in twine beforetaking it home. The twine should be tight enough tokeep the trees branches from blowing in the wind whenyou attach the tree to the top of your vehicle. If possible,

keep the tree wrapped in twine as you place it in thestand. This makes the tree easier to control.

Choose the right location.When looking for theright place to set up your natural tree, its best to choosea spot thats cool and free of drafts. The tree shouldnot be placed near heat sources, including appliances,fireplaces or vents, because such heat sources createa safety hazard and can make it difficult for the treeto retain moisture. There should also be ample spacebetween the top of the tree and the ceiling.


Place some covering on the ground beneath thetree.Even a freshly cut natural tree will shed needles overthe course of the holiday season. Before placing the stand inthe location youve chosen, put some type of covering, such asa tree bag, beneath the stand so its easier to gather all thoseneedles once the holiday season has ended.

Remember that natural trees are thirsty.Menand women who have never had a natural Christmas tree in thepast might be surprised at just how thirsty natural trees get.The stands reservoir should have lots of water, which should

never dip below the stump. If the water dips below the stump,you might be forced to cut a little more off the bottom ofthe trunk to ensure the tree will make it through the holidayseason. That can be a hassle once the tree has been decorated,so be sure to check the water in the reservoir at least once perday to maintain adequate water levels.
