Tips for Successful ApplicationFollowing these simple guidelines will help to ensure a successful finished project.

A clean, dry surface is important. Ordinary

household detergent or mineral spirits

usually do the job. Be sure to sand or scrape,

if necessary, and use a primer whenever

possible. Rusted, glossy or hard surfaces

should be sanded to improve adhesion.

Use aerosol paints and coatings in good

weather, ideally when temperatures are 55°F

to 75°F, and there is 40% to 60% relative

humidity. Avoid painting in direct sunlight

and hot, humid weather.

When applying more than one coat of

paint, be aware of recoat times stated in the

directions on the can.

It’s a good idea to test your paint or

spraying techniques on a scrap piece before

beginning your project. A smooth, even

application is important.

Always begin and finish spraying off the

object, using an even side-to-side motion with

each pass overlapping your spray pattern by

about one-third.

Take your time. Use two to three light coats

instead of one thick coat.

Avoid overspray by masking exposed areas

with tape or use a drop cloth.

When painting indoors, always ventilate your

room well by opening windows and doors.

A fan may also help to keep air circulating.

Clean spray valve after use by turning can

upside down and spraying for 5 seconds.

This helps prevent the spray tip from clogging

before next use.
