Tireless involvement earns GERI MROZ PANICKO Member of the Year

CNADM’S MEMBER OF THE YEAR IS AN INSTRUCTOR WITH AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF ENERGY AND EXPERIENCE IN DANCE— AND ONE OF THE BIGGEST HEARTS.

Geri Mroz Panicko, MDE, is in her 64th year of teaching and owning her own studio

in Chicago, and her 61st year as an active member of CNADM.

She started dancing at a young age, and was teaching students by the time she was in

high school. Incredibly, it was right after high school that she took on the responsibility of

running her own studio.

“I had just graduated, and my dance teacher had twins,” Geri explains. “She couldn’t

do it all anymore, so she called me up the day after graduation and asked if I could buy

the business.” After discussing the opportunity with her parents, Geri purchased the

studio, and it wasn’t much longer before she joined CNADM.

“I went down to Leo’s Dancewear on Randolph, because I knew everyone there,

and I talked to Mr. Leo. . He says, ‘Let’s talk to Mr. Kehl,’” Geri fondly remembers.

Upon meeting Leo Kehl, twice former president of CNADM, he invited her to come to

the convention. “At that time we went for three weeks. It was two weeks and then the

convention. I walked in, and there was little me with all those people!”

It didn’t take long for Geri to make new friends, and she has been an active part of

CNADM ever since that first visit.

Dear Members,

What makes our workshops better every year? YOU do!

We depend on your fresh ideas and feedback to hold our events to the high standards that

keep the dance community coming back for more. After each workshop, we encourage attendees

to complete an evaluation form that provides us with a wealth of great information—ranging from

faculty and session suggestions, to opinions on our evening events, to comments regarding our

policies and procedures.

Based on attendee feedback from Summer 2015, it’s rewarding to know that the majority of you

feel our workshops are well organized and our faculty is knowledgeable and friendly!

It’s important to us that you understand how valuable this information is in helping plan for the

future. We really do listen and respond. For example, this past summer, our Awards Banquet and

Ballet Forum started thirty minutes earlier—at your request. We utilized two ballrooms for Student

Competition to make for an earlier end to the evening. And more breaks were added to our daily

schedules; thanks for the tip.

Of course, there are always some requests we simply cannot accommodate. As helpful as it might

be, we are unable to remove pillars from ballrooms or restructure a long, narrow room into a massive

dance space. Adding Hip Hop classes to the Ballet Forum schedule is unlikely to happen, either—

but do keep those innovative suggestions coming!

We had a few comments about making our attendees more aware of our programs (Ballet Forum,

Dance & More, Student Honors) and how they operate. We agree that there’s no such thing as being

too well informed, so in this newsletter you’ll find articles offering expanded program details.

I hope that this message provides you with insight into our planning process and inspiration to

take even more ownership in your organization. Please give yourselves a pat on the back for your

passion that keeps CNADM moving forward! Working together, the Board and I look forward to

offering another outstanding year of continuing dance education.

Yours in dance,

Susan M. Girten, MDE

created a huge family among her students, old and new. “The love

Geri has for her dancers is genuine,” Micah Materre, writer for

WGN, says. “She knows them all by name, even their parents’ and

pets’ names. For some, she even knows their grade point average.”

Of the many students that have passed through Miss Geri’s

studio, there have been those less fortunate. Whether financially

or physically challenged, she has always opened her doors for

those students and accommodated their needs. “She has not

only taught them to dance, but taught them that no matter what

your life circumstance, you can and you will overcome,” says

nominator Angelica Campbell. “We can all express ourselves

through movement, and because of Miss Geri, even those who

thought they couldn’t were able to do so.”

Even at conventions, Geri makes herself as friendly and useful

as she can be. “I try to help out in any way I can,” Miss Geri

explains. “There are always a few studios I’ll invite to CNADM that

I know need to sharpen up!”

Through her own studio, Geri has helped to bring in many

members. Lynnette VanDien, another nominator, expounds on

some of the members and teachers Miss Geri led to CNADM:

“Miss Geri has introduced CNADM to me, Carol Lynn Topping,

Elysee Daniels, Judy Clarke, Patty O’Deen-Marsden, and Christine

Tsohas to name a few.”

CNADM has certainly benefited from having Miss Geri, but

being a part of CNADM has done much for Geri as well. “I’ve

made so many friends,” Geri states. “If I ever have a problem or

question about anything, I can call the ladies and they will help

me out.”

And even after years of attending the dance conferences, Miss

Geri continues to learn. “At my age, I still learn. I went over my

notes from the convention at the studio yesterday, and I thought,

What would I do without Chicago National?” Her advice to new

members: Get involved!

“They must be just as scared as I had been,” Geri sympathizes.

“I would just tell them to communicate and get involved with

everyone. And if they have questions, just ask one of the old bags

like me! But just keep up with it, and one day they’ll be on the

board.”

Miss Geri is still an active member and was recently named the

Ambassador for CNADM as a result of her passion for bringing

new members in and getting them involved.

When asked about the conventions to come, Miss Geri is

excited. “I think [CNADM] is going to grow faster and bigger

because we have a lot of young, active people that have great

ideas,” Geri says. “Like this year, with the Wrap-Up Rally. That was

a new one and it was the cutest thing! When I left there, I was so

hyped up. I think they’re going to do just fine.”

Please join CNADM in congratulating Geri Mroz Panicko, our

incredibly deserving Member of the Year! n

Dance and More is designed with classes of particular interest to the maturing dance student (ages 16-21) who is considering the pursuit of a professional dance career. In addition to technique, classes such as preparing for college, and audition performance may be included. MORE THAN 450 DANCE TEACHERS AND THEIR STUDENTS GATHERED at the CNADM Summer Dance

Workshops, held July 20-27 at the Hyatt Regency-Schaumburg.

The week was filled with dance classes – to improve technique,

provide new routines and combinations, expose students to new

styles and master teachers and energize the teachers’ spirits!

The Annual Awards Banquet, on Thursday evening, had 250

gathered to recognize CNADM’s newest members and those who

earned their (CDE) Certified Dance Educator certification, honor

our 25- and 50-year members, and surprise a couple of long-time

friends with our annual awards.

Geri Mroz Panicko, MDE, of Miss Geri’s School of Dance in

Chicago, was honored with the CNADM Outstanding Member

of the Year Award during the banquet. This award recognizes

an active member who has gone above and beyond in promoting

CNADM within their studio, as well as in supporting the art of

dance within their community at large.

CNADM selected famous choreographer Harrison

McEldowney as this year’s recipient of the CNADM 2015

Artistic Achievement Award.

McEldowney is best known for his proficiency with witty and

comedic choreography that has taken him to Japan, Germany,

Argentina, Great Britain, and beyond. His career highlights include

choreographing Carnegie Hall’s “Give My Regards to Broadway:

A Salute to 125 Years of Musical Theater,” and the closing

ceremonies for the ’92 Summer Olympic Games.

Most recently, Harrison has been at sea, choreographing and

directing spectacular shows for Royal Caribbean.

We are grateful that he made the time for teaching with us

and receiving his award at this summer’s workshop given his

demanding schedule.

Harrison McEldowney is the recipient of the 2015 Artistic Acheivement Award (left) shown here with CNADM president Sue Girten, MDE.

Friday night featured the annual Ballet Gala, with

performances by our National Ballet Forum attendees dancing to

music from Swan Lake to Sleeping Beauty. On Sunday the annual

Student Competition was held, with over 70 performances from

members of the Student Session Workshops.

The highlight of this year’s Summer Workshops was the

addition of our Wrap-Up Rally capping the week off, which

included prizes, dance routines and awards. The event started

at noon and was emceed by Diane Gudat. A number of dance

routines were performed, including a Parent Jazz routine taught

by Donna Ziegler, MDE, the Yellow Student Session group

performance, and the Faculty Performance “Cows.”

Students honored at the Wrap-Up included those who received

our Merit Scholarships and the students who completed all levels

of the Student Honors testing. The ceremony was inspirational for

those who attended, and was an energetic way to close the last day

of the Summer Workshops. n

A new feature of the workshops was the Wrap-up Rally. This summer featured a special faculty dance routine, “Cows” (top) and a Parent Jazz routine taught by Donna Ziegler, MDE. (middle). Honored were students having completed all levels of Student Honors testing: Jasmine Anderson, Abby Gibson and Rosalyn Miller, all of Debra Collier’s School of Dance.
