Congratulations to the Jackets and Coach Crenshaw.
Annual Art Show a Success
Here’s a peek at some of the outstanding work by TLH art students from the annual
art show. Thanks to our wonderful art teachers, Kathy Moore, Kathe Harris, Dot
Ross-Vaughn, and Johnny Nutt, for putting this show together and teaching our
students to produce such great work!
End-of-Course Test Schedule
Parents, several courses at the high school level require a state End of Course Test,
which weighs 20% of your student’s overall grade in the course. The schedule for
these exams is below. It is very important for students to have a good night’s sleep
and eat breakfast and lunch the day of these tests so they may do as well as possible.
Please avoid scheduling appointments or early dismissal during these testing times.
All exams will take place during the student’s regularly scheduled class time.
Some students attend a class, such as Math, every day. If this is the case, they will
take the exam on one of the days listed for that course, not both. The teacher will be
able to tell you which day the exam will be given.
US History A day May 12
US History B day May 13
Biology A day May 14
Biology B day May 15
Algebra I A day May 16
Algebra I B day May 19
English I A day May 20
English I B day May 21
Exam make up tests will be given throughout this time if your student misses the test.
Make up exams will extend through at least May 23. If your student does not take
the test, a zero will be averaged in to your student’s class average.
Dunking Booth Friday
As part of our “Cruisin’ for a Cure” Campaign, your teens will have an opportunity
to dunk teachers & administrators during all three lunches on Friday. If your teen
asks for extra money for this, it is legitimate. Note: I admire the administrators and
teachers who volunteered to do this. I, however, did not .
$2.00 = 1 ball

Furman’s Emerging Public Leaders
Program (EPL)
Melanie Armstrong, new director of Furman University’s Riley Institute’s Emerging
Public Leaders (EPL) program is looking for well-rounded rising high school students
with leadership potential to attend EPL this summer. Emerging Public Leaders, which
received a “South Carolina on the Move” award in 2005, is an exciting service-
oriented leadership program open to rising high school seniors. This week-long
summer program (June 22 – 28, 2014) offers a series of experiences that enable
students to develop into civic minded and engaged leaders in their communities.
During the week, participants attend workshops that prepare them to plan and
implement a service project addressing a specific need within their own
communities. Students will then return to campus in the spring to present the results
of their projects to their peers and a panel of judges. Additional project funds are
awarded to the winner. The program is free of charge to all students who are
selected to participate.
Students may contact Melanie Armstrong ([email protected] or 864-
294-3688) at the Riley Institute if they need additional information or have
questions. Students may apply at http://riley.furman.edu/education/emerging-
public-leaders-application . The Emerging Public Leaders website is
http://riley.furman.edu/education/projects/emerging-public-leaders/emerging-public-
leaders .

Education Candidate calls for
Legalizing Marijuana to Fund Schools

Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- A candidate for June's Democratic primary for State
Superintendent of Education has proposed the legalization of marijuana to fund
education in South Carolina.
Sheila Gallagher spoke about her idea during the state Democratic Convention in
Columbia.
"We saw what happened in Washington and Colorado that has begun to set the
stage around the country as to what is possible for raising tax dollars, and I'd like to
see those tax dollars go to our public schools," said Gallagher.
She says the state should allow voters to decide the issue.
Tyler Jones, spokesman for the House Democratic Caucus released a statement
saying "House Democrats are committed to making medical marijuana accessible to
the patients in South Carolina who need it the most. Perhaps the comments today
were intended to grab newspaper headlines instead of being seen as a serious policy
proposal. Needless to say they send the wrong message to young people in South
Carolina and will not be an idea seriously considered by the General Assembly any
time soon."
