Welcome to 2020 BBQ and Drinks
To be held
tonight
on
the Croquet Lawn
from
5.30-7.00pm.
This is a family event so everyone is welcome!
The LPS Parents’ Club is a small (but getting bigger) group of hard-working parents that meets monthly to organise various fundraisers, social events and information nights for our school community. Tonight they will be hosting their annual “Welcome Back BBQ and Drinks” which is a perfect opportunity to meet the teachers, other LPS parents and their children in a casual, social setting. Please come along with your children and help the staff and the Parents’ Club welcome in 2020 and whilst the children are treated to a BBQ, you can enjoy a drink or two, some delicious nibbles and friendly chat. We hope to see you there! In “Truth and Happiness”, Leonie McNair and Harriet Thyne, Co-Principals
In the Garden with 2/3 Digital Technology
At the beginning of the year, Digital Technology students learn to create and name their
own folders on the school file system. They then learn how to create new documents from
within their personal folders. This ensures that all their work is saved into the folder and the
school system means can always be found, rather than just on that computer – we have 40-
plus of them so it’s very hard to find again if they don’t! Their first task is to create a ‘Theme
Page’ with pictures and text and to save it into their folders. Students took a picture of
themselves In the Garden and combined that with the theme title and some creative text to
create some very imaginative and detailed work. Judge for yourselves…

Delicious Peach!
This term we are reading James and the Giant
Peach by Roald Dahl. We got to the part in the
story where James crawled inside the giant
peach and reached the stone where he
discovered some amazing creatures were living.
Road Dahl writes the most wonderful
descriptions throughout this book and he had
our mouths watering as he described a very
hungry James taking bites out of the sides of the
tunnel in the peach.
Luckily for us, Mrs Sarah Shaw had brought us in a magnificent peach from her tree at
home. The colour of the skin and the peach flesh matched exactly with Roald’s description.
We were all eager to taste the delicious, juicy peach flesh and it certainly did not disappoint!
Thank you, Mrs Shaw, for giving us this wonderful opportunity to experience what James did
as we were reading.

Group 2/3 Student of the Week
This term Mrs Freeland and Mrs Thyne are looking for children who, in keeping with our theme, are Growing into Beautiful Humans. This week Tejas Shah, Poppy Taylor, Ethan Price and Toby O’Meara were the worthy recipients of our award. These four children have started the year superbly, working hard, having fun, being kind towards others and by being little rays of sunshine!

DEEP Flight Engineers
This year, DEEP Engineering students are investigating flight. So far
we have looked at how wings create lift - ask them about
‘Bernoulli’s Principle - and have commenced construction of balsa
gliders, starting with the wings. The wings are planned out and cut,
then carefully sanded to create the basic aerofoil shape. Once that
is complete then the tailplane, that is the – horizontal and vertical
stabilizers – will be commenced.

Writing numbers
This week the clever Prep students have starting using the whiteboards to practise writing their numbers correctly. The first line teaches us to ALWAYS start at the top and each line gets harder. We are working on forming ‘racetrack 8’ correctly and making sure that all numbers are facing the right way. For their first attempts, they did an amazing job.

ART INSPIRED BY GARDENS
Students in Groups 2-6 have started the year learning a lot about colour. Senior students have combined colour-mixing knowledge with painting in an "impressionistic" style to create their own lettering styles using their names. The group 4s have proudly displayed theirs on the front of their art journals which they will use for the next three years for experimenting and planning their projects. In the coming weeks they will learn more about Impressionism, particularly the work of Claude Monet, and create their own water lily paintings. Groups 2/3 have created some beautiful colour wheel 'flowers' that now frame the doors of their home rooms. At the same time as learning about colour theory and how to accurately mix colours, they also had the opportunity to use their cutting and folding skills to create stunning centres for their flowers. This week we will make our own brushes from materials we find in the school gardens ready to use them to paint our own water lilies inspired by Monet's famous paintings.

Tik Tok
Tik Tok is an app that is being used by many students within our school. Like most
technologies, this app can be entertaining but also offers opportunities for inappropriate
use. We draw parents’ attention to the fact that this app is not intended for use with
people under 13 years of age and provide the following information from Tik Tok’s own
support centre …
What is TikTok?
TikTok is a destination for short-form mobile videos.
Who is TikTok intended for?
TikTok is intended for users age 13 and over. Please do not allow a child under the age of 13
to use the app. If you learn that your child under the age of 13 has registered for a TikTok
account, you may alert us at [email protected]. We will promptly take appropriate action.
Can I prevent my teen from downloading TikTok?
We encourage you to oversee your teen’s internet use, including any apps they may
download. Both iOS and Android provide parental controls that let you block or limit specific
apps, features, movies, music, and more at the device level. Because TikTok is for users 13
and over, we’ve given it a strict 12+ app store rating. This allows you to use these device-
parental controls to simply block our apps from your underage child’s phone. Please see
the Apple App Store or Google Play Store instructions for more on parental controls (or
“restrictions”) and how to enable them.
How can my teen control who sees their videos and sends them messages?
Users can control who can see their uploaded content, follow them, and send them
messages by making their account private. With a private account, users can approve or
deny followers and restrict their uploaded content and incoming messages to followers
only. If a user has a public profile, anyone signed into the TikTok app can view that user’s
public videos. However, only approved followers can send that user a message. Whether
users choose to have a public or a private account, they can always:
block another from contacting them at any time
save a video privately so that content will not be viewable by any other user
Please remember: Even with a private account, profile information – including profile
photo, username, and bio – will be visible to all users. Counsel your teen not to reveal
personal information such as age, address, or phone number in his/her profile.
