Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-90) Margaret Mary Alacoque of the Visitation order in France is a saint Jesus chose to spread the devo- tion to His Sacred Heart throughout the Church. During Saint Margaret Marys lifetime, there was a great heresy afflicting the Church. Not only was Protes- tantism spreading, but some Catholics, called Jansenists, claimed that God was a strict judge, who would only allow a very few people into heaven. Because of the impact of both Protestantism and Jansenism, many Catholics had fallen away from Church teachings, especially devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Beginning in 1673, through a series of visons, Jesus called Saint Margaret Mary to restore this devotion to the Church. Margaret Mary was born in 1647 in Burgundy, France. She was the only daughter of Claude Alacoque, who had also several sons. Even as a very young child, Margaret showed an intense love for the Blessed Sacrament. She preferred to pray and be silent before the Eucharist, rather than play. After her First Communion at the age of nine, she contracted rheumatic fever and was confined to bed for four years. When she was recovered, she made a vow to the Blessed Virgin that she would enter religious life. She was instantly restored to per- fect health. From then on, she added the name Mary to her baptismal name of Margaret. Her father died when Margaret Mary was very young, and her family soon became impover- ished. During this time, Margaret Mary frequently prayed before the Blessed Sacrament in the local church. When she was 17, her family regained their fortune and her mother encouraged her to socialize, in the hopes of her finding a suitable husband. Out of obedience, and believing that her childhood vow was no longer binding, she began to attend social events with her brothers. One night, after returning home from a dance, she experienced a vision of Jesus. He was scourged and bloody and chastised her for forgetting Him. At the same time, He also reassured her that His Sacred Heart was filled with love for her, because of the childhood promise she had made to His Blessed Mother long ago. She fulfilled this vow, entering the convent on 25 May 1671, when she was almost 24 years old. Margaret Mary had to work very hard to prove herself worthy of this religious vocation. Although she was admitted to the order on August 35, 1671, she was not allowed to make her religious profession on the same date of the following year, which would have been the normal course for nuns to take. A fellow novice described Margaret Mary as humble, simple and forthright, but always kind and patient. She took her final vows on November 6, 1672. She was assigned to the infirmary, but she was not very skillful at her tasks. In 1673 through 1675, Sister Margaret Mary received her visions of the Sacred Heart, which, Jesus told her, was the symbol of His love for mankind. At this time, Jesus told Sister Margaret Mary that she was the one He had chosen to lead others in universal devotion to His Sacred Heart. Jesus showed her His heart afire with His Love for all people. He had given His life for them, but received only irreverence, coldness and ingratitude from them. He wanted the world to recognize the love He continually poured out for them and to make amends for their ingratitude. He asked Sister Margaret Margret to begin a personal devotion to His divine heart by receiving Holy Communion every first Friday and spending an hour in prayer the night before, seeking His pardon and making reparation for man- kinds desertion of his love. In another vision, Jesus asked her to establish a Church feast day to honor his Sacred Heart, one to be held on the third Friday following Pentecost. On that day, those faithful to Jesus would attend Mass, receive holy Communion, profess their love and offer reparations for the way He had been insulted by mankind. Jesus also told Margaret Mary that this devotion should include the reception of Holy Communion on the first Fri- day of each month, Eucharistic adoration during a Holy Hour on Thursdays, and the celebration of the Feast of the Sacred Heart on the Third Sunday after Pentecost. When Margaret Mary shared these visions with her superiors, she was subject- ed to severe examinations. It was her spiritual adviser, St. Claude de la Colombiere, who recognized the holiness, fervor and sincerity of Margaret Mary. And, because she believed, as a cloistered nun, there was little she could do to foster her visions outside of her order, it was St. Colombiere, along with St. John Eudes, who would promote a Sacred Heart feast day to the faithful and to the Holy See. Saint Margaret Mary, meanwhile, continued to receive Holy Communion daily and spend many hours before the Most Blessed Sacrament, pray- ing for the success of these efforts. Throughout her life, Mar- garet Mary prayed for the reparation for sins, especially for those directed against the Eucharist. Sister Margaret Mary died in 1690. When her tomb was canonically opened in July 1830, two instantaneous cures were recorded. Her incorrupt body rests above the side altar in the Chapel of the Apparitions, located at the Visitation Mon- astery in France, and many blessings have been claimed by those who visit there from all parts of the world. Eventually, universal approval for a Feast Day of the Sacred Heart of Je- sus was given from the Vatican in August, 1856 during the reign of Pope Pius IX (r. 1846-78). It was Pius IX that named Margaret Mary, Blessed. Pope Leo XIII (r. 1878-1903) was encouraged by Catholics around the world, to consecrate the human race to the Sacred Heart. Finally, in 1920, Margaret Mary was canonized by Pope Pius XI. Today, the devotion Jesus called for is acknowledged through numerous prayers and depicted in thousands of images, including the image of Our Lord holding his flaming compassionate and merciful heart. At every Eucharistic Adoration, we revere the Sacred Heart in our Benediction prayers: May the heart of Jesus, in the most Blessed Sacrament, be praised, adored and loved with grateful affection, at every moment in all the tabernacles of the world, even until the end of time.Like Catholics in the 17th century, studies show that fer- vor for Eucharistic devotion is waning among todays Catho- lics. In this Year of the Eucharist, our Church calls us to re- ceive Jesus-Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity-in the Sacrament and to spend time with Him in Adoration, praying with Saint Margaret Mary for a return to an understanding, appreciation and love for the Most Blessed Sacrament, Jesus, our Lord. As you are probably aware, this year, June, 2020 through July, 2021, has been designated as The Year of the Eucharist by Cardinal Sean. Each week, in this bulletin a story of one of our Catholic heroes, the saints and martyrs and their devotion to the Eucharist, will appear. As the year progresses, and COVID-19 regulations lessen, the collaborative’s “Missionaries of the Eucharist” will plan events that help deepen our devotion to, and understanding of, Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament for the people of our parishes. These missionaries have also committed to praying an additional 15 minutes each day so that our efforts will bear great fruit in our parishes, the Church of Boston, and the Church universal. Already, some of our Missionaries of the Eucharist have spent time in reflection on the graces they themselves have received from this Blessed Sacrament. You can find these reflections on our website. PRAYER CARDS have been distributed to all parishioners leaving Mass each weekend. Although you may have already taken a prayer card, please take another one to share with your family, neighbors, and friends, because all of us are called in this Year of the Eucharist to promote prayer for a better understanding and appreciation of the Most Blessed Sacrament among all Catholics. Thank your!

Ignatius's Journey: Ignatius's visit to Montserrat was part of an intense and difficult period for him: he was recovering from a battle injury to his leg, and he was struggling to leave behind his privileged and prestigious past as a noble man. At Montserrat, Ignatius began to live his faith, spending all night in prayer before the statue of the Virgin. He put on simple clothes and gave his expensive clothing to a beggar. After Ignatius’s visit to Montserrat, he stopped at Manresa, a small town nearby. He planned to spend a few nights writing down his thoughts, but he stayed for 11 months and left profoundly changed. The fruit of Ignatius's reflections at Manresa became one of the greatest works of Christian spirituality, the Spiritual Exercises.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, parishes were required to conduct an in-pew process and meet an in-pew donor goal to qualify for a Catholic Appeal Abatement or Catholic Appeal Rebate. Under current pandemic conditions the traditional in-pew process can-not be conducted to the extent needed for any parish to meet this condition. So, for this year only, the in-pew campaign will be replaced

with a direct emailing to all parishioners and/or directly emailing in August. A “Pastor Letter” to be sent by the Catholic Appeal Team. The Archdiocese seeks you support because, even in these challenging times, the Catholic Appeal remains a major source of revenue for Central Ministries that supports over 51 Archdiocesan ministries, Catholic Schools, and other charities throughout the Archdiocese. Please consider supporting this vital source of income for our Archdiocese.

Sacred Heart and Saint Thomas More—July 26th 2020—-17th Sunday in Ordinary Time As we know, during Ordinary Time, the Readings of the Day are proclaimed primarily so that we can better under-stand the teachings of the Lord Jesus so as to better appreci-ate our call to follow Jesus. If we have the ears to hear and heed His teachings, then we will be the best disciples of Jesus that we can be. Ordinary Time is a time to grow in our disci-pleship. In the parables proclaimed in the Gospel of the past two weeks, Jesus explains the mysteries of the kingdom of God-God’s reign, or rule - which is even then, as now, being real-ized on earth through Christ. Jesus compares the kingdom of God to seed sown on rich soil that will yield thirty-, sixty-, a hundredfold (Mt 11:1-23); to the smallest of seeds, the mustard seed that will grow into the largest of all trees; and to yeast that rises up to “infect” the whole dough (Mt 13: 31-43). The message is clear: the Lord expects that His Church, to whom the keys to the kingdom has been given, i.e. the Gospel—the teachings of Jesus and the Gift and Power of His Holy Spirit, to enable us to under-stand, live, and share in His Word. If His disciples-then and now- heed the Word of the Lord, then the Kingdom of Heaven will come, His will be done “on earth as it is in heaven.” Last week, Jesus instructed us that, despite the evils present in our world, we must follow Him and “go everywhere (to) make disciples of all people.” In the parable of the wheat and weeds, Jesus reminds us that the Lord Himself will judge those who do evil at “harvest time,” the day of judgement. The Lord will judge. Until that time, our mission of evangelization must continue to make disciples of all nations (See Mt 13:24-30.). In today’s Gospel, Jesus reinforces the message of last week’s Gospel, when He says: “the kingdom of heaven is like a net (the message of Jesus and His disciples) thrown into the sea (the world), which collects fish of every kind (all people). When it is full (in the fullness of time) they haul it ashore and sit down to put what is good into buckets. What is bad they throw away. Thus, it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the wicked and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth” (Mt 13: 47-50). The message is clear: the kingdom of God is now, so believe and repent lest you lose eternal life. How valuable, worthwhile, life-changing is the Kingdom of which Jesus speaks? It is priceless, a “hidden treasure.” It cannot be bought, cannot be taken, but it can be ours, if we, like the man in today’s parable, are willing to sacrifice every-thing we have to attain it (v. 44). The man in the parable of the Hidden Treasure is taking a great risk to take anything from his neighbor’s field. In Jewish law, what is found in a field belongs to the owner of the field, which is why the man buys the field in order to gain the treasure. Jesus is using this parable to demonstrate the great lengths that we must go to attain the reward of eternal life. Finally, in the parable of The Pearl Without Price (v.45-46), Jesus emphasizes that, like the merchant searching for valuable pearls, when we find it, we, too, must be willing to sacrifice all that we have to build up the kingdom of God on earth, to live Jesus’ Truth, Way, and Life. When we hear the Word of God proclaimed in Church each weekend, we must not only hear the words, we must listen to them. That is, we should take time to reflect on how

well we are meeting the challenge each reading presents for us on our journey of faith. We might have heard these parables many times, but have we let their power, the power of the Holy Spirit working within us, open our eyes, our ears and our hearts so that we put the lessons of these parables to practice in our daily lives. We must put our faith in the Words of the Lord into action in our own lives, or His Truth will not impact us, or our families, or our world in any way. This chapter of Matthew represents turning-point in the ministry of Jesus. At the beginning of His ministry He taught in the synagogues, where the scribes and Pharisees rejected His message. So, Matthew reports, Jesus begins to preach instead at the seashore, where the more humble people gath-er. God’s People, in truths made concrete and simple by us-ing parables. Using items or situations (like seeds, wheat, yeast) and situations (Jewish laws of ownership) which most people of His time would understand, Jesus takes them be-

yond their present reality to help them un-derstand the heavenly mysteries which are beyond their comprehension. These parables make the Truth concrete and simple for all people to understand. The parables Jesus uses to present His Way, Truth and Life lead people beyond the reality of their own

daily lives to mysteries of the Kingdom of God. However, a parable is a story. Some of Jesus’ listeners may be too disin-terested in “stories,” or too lazy or blinded by their own reali-ty that they do not go deeper into the Words of Jesus to find the Truth which is hidden within the story. These are those who have eyes, but don’t see, ears but don’t hear, and hearts that won’t open to the life changing Word of God. After Jesus finishes teaching the crowds, he takes His disciples aside to ask them if they truly understood these teachings. They do understand. And so, Jesus replied: “Then every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old” (v. 53). Not only have the disciples been with Jesus long enough to discern the hid-den meaning in His teachings, but they were Jews, well-versed in the Law and the prophets. From this point on, Jesus begins to prepare, to train, His disciples for their mission of evangelization, their mission to change the world. They alone will become the witnesses to every single thing that Jesus endures for the salvation of all mankind. They have seen how Jesus has fulfilled the Old Covenant. Now, they will become the scribes-the teachers and reporters of Truth-of a New Covenant. From their storehouse, they will be able to use their experiences to show others that Jesus has indeed “not come to abolish the Law and the prophets, but to fulfill it (Mt 5:17). Each of us has been given unique knowledge, experiences, skills and abilities. These gifts and knowledge are not new to us. Rather, they are the “old” that must be used in a “new” way to make disciples, to build up the kingdom of heaven. We are called to bring the Good News to those who are in need of God’s Love and Light, those who are allowing the cares of this world to block the Word and Work of the Lord in their lives. We are called. We are chosen. We are the New Evangelists. Let us, then “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you”: (Mt 28: 19-20).

Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; For you have revealed to

little ones the Mysteries of the kingdom.

(Mt 11:25)
