PharaohsThe pharaoh of Egypt was the absolute ruler. He was the most powerful. The laws were made by the Pharaoh and would change by his mood.

The pharaoh was considered to be a god. Pharaoh comes from the word per-ao which means great house. The god was “housed” in the body of the human pharaoh.Duties of a Pharaoh:• Religious Duties

• Offerings to the gods every morning • Ask for the sun to rise• Perform ceremonies to make the Nile River

flood each year

Interesting Facts about a Pharaoh

• Female pharaohs were considered rulers but did not have as much respect as a male pharaoh. Some female pharaohs would wear beards and dress like a man.

• Commoners never referred to a pharaoh as KING but would call him “Pharaoh or “Palace”. (Palace was used since the body was a “human house”.)

• Pharaohs commonly married other family members to keep the royalty within the family.

• Most pharaohs were men.

• Administrative/Governing Duties• Keep Upper and Lower Egypt at peace• Guide and over see government officials

• Vizier – Chief advisor (Second most powerful man)

• Nomarch – Local governors (Made sure all paid taxes)
