DESCRIPTIVE WRITING VOCABULARY

• Dominant Impression• An overall feeling the details work together to create

• Concrete words• Provide very specific details about their subject and often appeal to several

of the senses

• Active verbs• Show someone or something performing an action. Are often preferable in

writing to linking verbs or passivized constructions

• Descriptive verbs• Verbs that create a vivid depiction or help convey a dominant impression

instead of just providing information

• Write out each sentence, cross out the weak or linking verbs, and replace them with active or descriptive verbs

• Discuss possible dominant impressions you might use for the description of a restaurant

• Select one dominant impression for each group

1. In your unit 1 groups, provide a detailed description of that restaurant using concrete words and active/descriptive verbs that conveys your selected dominant impression.
