TOP FIVE TREKS IN INDIA FOR

    TREKKING WITHOUT A PORTER

India is a land of unity in diversities and this fact is also applicable in case of the natural layout of the

country. A land consisting of deep oceans, free-flowing rivers, dense jungles as well as snowy peaks,

India can turn out to be an attractive spot for trekking and trekking tours without porter would always

be the first option of the more adventurous trekkers. Lets have a look:

y CHOPTA-CHANDRASHILA TREK: This is one of the most beautiful trekking spots ofGarhwal Himalayas. Chopta, or the mini-Switzerland of India is situated on the

Chandra Parbat, with Chandrashila as its highest peak. The Chandrashila summit offers

picturesque views of peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedar and Chaukhamba. From

Chopta, it takes approx five kms of upward trekking to the Chandrashila peak via theTungarnath Temple. The strain of the journey is compensated by experiencing a platter

of nature at its bestdense alpine forests, widespread meadows and slopes.

y VALLEY OF FLOWERS TREK: This is actually the valley of the stream Pushpavati, atributary from the river Alaknanda. The Valley of Flowers was discovered by Frank

Smythe (1931) on his way back from an expedition to Mount Kamet. Along with primula,

asters and fritillaria, Valley of Flowers is also home to a host of celebrated flowers like

brahmakamal, blue poppy and cobra lily. It is a three kms climb from Ghangria, a village

beside river Lakshman Ganga. Two-to-three bridges have to be crossed en route, and no

mules are allowed into the valley.y GOMUKH TREK: One of the most rewarding treks of India, the Gomukh-Tapovan trek

entails mountain climbing, rock-climbing and traversing glaciers. The Gomukh glacier--

the source of the river Ganges, is just four kms away from Bhojawasa. It is a risky trek

with narrow tracks, deep gorges, unevenly scattered boulders of various sizes, and loose

dry soil blocking the tracks at several points. From Gomukh to Tapovan it is a steep

climb of four kms, and the view of the surrounding peaks becomes clearer with the

    climb.

y SHAM VALLEY TREK IN LADAKH: The Sham Valley (or the Apricot Valley) trekking inLadakh provides an intense glimpse of the interior of Ladakh without too much of pain. Some of the richest Ladakhi villages and monasteries (Likir, Rizong, Lamayuru, Alchi) are

crossed en route. Due to low altitude of the passes and lesser span of walking, this trek

is also known as baby trek.

y KEDARNATH-VASUKITAL TREK: Kedarnaththe site of one of the twelve jyotirlingas ofLord Shivais counted amongst the most sacred site of the Hindus. The lake of Vasuki

Tal is situated about six kms away from Kedarnath. The journey from Kedarnath to

Vasuki Tal is along a grassy slope on West Kedarnath, offering beautiful views of the

Chaukhamba peaks and the Mandakini valley.

Although trekking without porter satisfies the adventurous spirit of the trekkers, but the age, health and

fitness of the trekkers should be kept in mind before conducting such a tour.
