“How to start?” Whether it is packing or unpacking, a

road trip or a relationship, a sermon or a newsletter article,

the question is the same: “how to start”, “where to begin”,

“what is first”. As I sit here, after our first night in our new

home in Front Royal, I am experiencing that bit of paralysis

that comes with this big decision. After all, as my mom al-

ways said, “You only get one chance to make a first impres-

sion.” Coming to a church following the extraordinary lead-

ership that Pastor Gary has shared with you these last 12

years can be a bit daunting. How to begin ministry with the

faithful disciples of Christ at FRUMC? When you think

about it though, it isn’t entirely a beginning; but really more

a continuation of the awesome ministry that the people of

FRUMC have been about for a long, long time.

I come to serve as your pastor, standing on the shoul-

ders of all of my clergy predecessors, surrounded and sup-

ported by the committed discipleship of the laity of FRUMC,

past and present. Really, the same is true for us all, as we

seek to live after the example of Christ. We worship, serve,

witness and fellowship, as a response to our relationship

with God, in unity with all who have gone before. God

brings us together as a church family to do this together, in

this particular time and place. We move forward together

because of the discipleship and commitment of all those

who have gone before—laity and clergy. We pick up where

others have left off—trusting that Christ will continue to fit

us together perfectly, so that we may be fruitful in sharing

the love of God through Christ in every aspect of our lives.

The UMCOR Coffee Project links congregations with small coffee producers through the Equal Exchange organization, which pays a fair price to the growers. The great thing about this project is that you can save money and do some good at the same time. The church office has a variety of these products available. This premium product is available in a

variety of roasts and grinds as well as whole beans. Typical prices run between $7.00 and $7.50 for a 12 oz. bag. Teas - Green, Chai, Earl Grey and Rooibos (caffeine free) are all organic and cost $2.75 per box. Wonderfully rich dark and milk chocolate bars are also available - with or without nuts at $2.50.

Stewardship Reflection

“Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and pay

your vows to the Most High.

Ascribe to the Lord the honor due His Name; bring an

offering, and come into His courts.”

As Methodists, we believe that all we have - our time,

abilities, and possessions - are gifts from a Glorious and

Generous God who is likewise pleased when we thankfully

offer back to Him apportion of that which He has given

us.

The Psalmist tells us to do this in a spirit of sacrifice.

To sacrifice means that the gifts we offer accepts not just

our gifts but also us as gives. We are the living sacrifice.

Understanding the United Methodist Church

We begin to examine the General Rules and their present day application.

The Negative Rules

Rule One: (Against) the taking of the name of God in vain.

Scriptural Basis: "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him

guiltless that taketh is name in vain." (Exod. 20:7.)\

This supports the Third Commandment. Cursing, swearing, and railing against God on the part of profane

men has always been discountenanced among Christians everywhere. Modern church people sometimes

have become careless in the way they use expletives and current explosive terms. Psychologically, this may

furnish something of relief, so psychiatrists tell us; and within their degree harmless expressions of vehe-

mence do no ill. But the name of God should not be brought into common conversation except in a most rev-

erent way. "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain" must be written anew today.

Rule Two: (Against) the profaning the day of the Lord, either by doing ordinary work therin, or by

buying or selling.

Scriptural Basis: The essential moral import of the Fourth Commandment has always been reflected in

Christianity. "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy." (Exod. 10:8.)

Wesley referred to Sunday as the "day of the Lord," not the "Sabbath." Puritanical legalism which would

transfer to the Christian Sunday all the heavy burdens of the Jewish dispensation need not burden or weigh

us down today. Nevertheless there is a sense in which the Lord's Day has been hallowed eternally by the

resurrection of Christ and is to be kept in his name and for his glory and for the life and well-being of his

Church. Whatever theories may be held regarding Sunday, the Christian Church and the Christian Sunday

stand together; injure one and you injure the other.

Someone once said,some time ago, that if he were given control of American life, he would first of all restore

the old-fashioned Sunday. "For," he said, "the old-fashioned Sunday was the best remedy ever devised to

restore peace and sobriety to a jittery world."

IIn our time Sunday has come to be a day of recreation and within reason is one in which family life and

home life can be developed and enjoyed in a quiet, Christian way.

Of necessity there are some businesses which must be carried out on Sunday as well as on other days. But

we must also remember Sunday to keep it holy, not because of crystallized legality, but because of the rich-

ness and grace made possible by the day of our Lord.

Buying and selling on Sunday are specifically forbidden by this rule, and forbidden, too, by the deeper con-

science of Christian men and women. Sunday should refit us for the six days on which we must labor. To do

that it must be a day especially dedicated to the worship and the remembrance of Almighty God.

With that in mind, the answer to the question “How to start?” is clear. We start

with relationship; relationship with God; relationship with each other; relationship with

others, near and far, like us—and very different from us. The relationship that you

have had with Pastor Gary has encouraged and empowered you to grow in your rela-

tionship with God and others. At FRUMC it is clear that Christ has indeed fit the pieces

together perfectly. The active participation of so many in ministry, leadership and wor-

ship is a sign post that this is a place that is full of the love of Christ. Sharing responsi-

bility for the work God has called us to is the way God has designed the Church to be.

We grow in our discipleship through serving, formation and worship. I am looking for-

ward to knowing and growing with you as we serve Christ faithfully from this part of the

Body of Christ at Front Royal UMC.

JULY BIRTHDAYS

Church Mission Trip At 6:00 in the morning on June 23rd 30 youth and adults gathered in the church parking lot preparing to head out to Magoffin County, Kentucky for their week long mission trip in Appalachia. The group was divided into four work teams for the daily projects. We were joined with three other churches to make a total of nine teams for the week. A total of eight houses were worked on during the week. The work ranged from digging ditches and moving a lot of dirt, installing

a floating floor, paneling, dry walling, mudding, taping and painting. Everyone that participated grew to appreciate what they have here at home, some of the homes didn’t even have indoor plumbing. The home base was Magoffin County High School where we had accommodations in the gymna-sium and use of the locker rooms and cafeteria. Everyone enjoyed getting to know the families they were working with as well as members of our congregation they didn’t know as well, and people from the other churches in our center. New Mid Week Adult Studies Started June 19th

Proverbs Bible Study - An in-depth look and review of the Proverbs (a collection of practical life about Godly living) will begin at 6 pm and go until 7 pm on the third floor of the Education Building in the Middle School Classroom. All you need is your Bible and we will jump into one of the most quoted books of the Bible.

Jesus, a Theography - A study on this book by Leonard Sweet and Frank Viola will begin at 7 pm in the Library on the third floor of the Education Building. This book is geared to both the average reader and the scholar. The authors reclaim the entire Bible as a narrative of Jesus Christ. Rachel Pavalock will be facilitating the discussion for this study.

We will preview the book on the first night and then order books based on the size of the group.

The Youth will not be meeting regularly through the summer, but we will still be active. We hope that you enjoyed worship on June 9 be-

cause we enjoyed leading the services. Many of the youth were part of the ASP team that traveled to Magoffin County, KY. We left very early on June 23 worked

for the week and returned Saturday June 29, just in time to meet our new pastor on the 30th. We have been invited to work on a Stop Hunger Now event with other youth from the district

and with the Voices of Youth on July 12. at 11:00, more information will be coming for the Youth. On Thursday July 18, 11 youth will be heading to Lake Junaluska for our annual trip. Many of the youth look forward to this trip every year. We will then be back in time to help with Vacation Bible School on July 28. So even though we won’t meet on Sunday’s we will be doing a lot over the next few weeks.

Be watching for when things will be starting back up at the end of August.

United Methodist Women News…

On June 7th& 8th, the FRUMW Indoor Yard Sale was held in the Fellowship Hall, Janet Harshman and Ann Crim were the chairwomen. About $1,700 was made for Missions both local and away. Thank you to the men of the UMM who helped set up and take down tables and to the circle women who gave their time to support the event and pack the “leftovers” that will benefit the Salvation Army. Also thanks to those persons who donated their unwanted items which made the yard sale a success. It was all greatly appreciated. start putting your unneeded items aside for next year’s sale.

On June 8th and 9th the Annual UMW Day at Ferrum College was held at Ferrum. None of our ladies at-tended. Ferrum College was founded as a Mission School by the Methodist Church. On June 18, 2013 the regular UMW meeting was held in the Fellowship Hall. The program was on Social Action, Kim Athey, Mission Coordinator of Social Action, was the leader with Melissa DeDomenico-Payne, Executive Director of Harmony House, as guest speaker. She spoke of the needs of Harmony House, the building is for sale and there is a need to find new housing. Call Kim Athey (635-1737) if you would like to make a contribution, a donation or what other needs there are at Harmony House. The Deborahs were hostesses with delicious punch and cookies for dessert.

The August Executive Meeting will be held on August 27 at 7:00 PM in the LFK. We of the FRUMW are looking forward to meeting and welcoming our new Pastor, the Rev. Denise Bates.
