What is a Food Hub?

Food hubs are broadly defined as facilities that manage the aggregation, storage, processing, distribution or
marketing of locally and regionally produced food. They fulfill from one to all of these functions and come in a
variety of shapes and sizes.www.farmaid.org

Centralized source for local food (from farm to table)
Amalgamate all food from across the region (Eastern Ontario)
Quick and easy access through technology
Source food for our area (lack of ‘grocery’ store)

How will it benefit the community?

How will it benefit Agro and Artisan Producers?
Sales will help supplement slow seasons
Promote the region as a “food region”
Greater sales base (increase the distribution to industrial sector)
Help with food labeling process, and other items
Promote their “brand” and product

Working with organizations who are developing similar projects and focus on Ag related items (Agri Food Network, OMAFRA, etc)
Contacting current food hubs (see best practices, how they developed, etc)
Gaining public opinion and feedback (vendor feed back also)
Looking at which options would fit best in the area
What are we doing to ensure quality?

Direct sale – selling the products to consumers/ restaurants, etc
Direct meal sale – preplanned meals that have all locally sourced items
Community kitchen to help mass produce items (for vendors)
Community kitchen cooking lessons
Events and tutorials to help garner further interest in local food
Promote SD&G and PR as a Food Region
How will our food hub work?

Standard signs for items (tourism info, community center locates, etc)
Signs will have our branding on them and will help identify North Stormont related highlights
Work with other community partners to incorporate
