New Learning Strategies for the Workplace

For organisations to stay relevant today, they no longer have the luxury of using the same tried and tested learning methodologies. What worked even five years ago is irrelevant and inappropriate in today’s globalised world dominated by fierce competition and change. The demands of an increasingly fast paced and competitive business environment and a Gen Y workforce require new learning tools to deal with employees who have access to knowledge and skills in multiple ways, including mobile learning and iPad applications. In a world increasingly driven by technology, our personal and organisational space is being taken over by social media and mobile devices.

Employees today face an information overload. We need tools that optimise learner attention and retention for improved productivity and performance. Competing priorities require we measure the transfer of learning to the workplace. Trainers have the critical role to bridge this gap between intention and execution.

Questions that remain at the top of the Trainer’s mind will be answered by a host of training experts, including the legendary Bob Pike:

• How can organisations maximise productivity and performance with effective learning interventions?• What are the tools that will work for you now?• What are the best practices in the learning and development field?

Listen to the experts, network with fellow professionals and explore what the leading organisations are doing to flawlessly execute learning strategies to make learning interventions drive organisational competitiveness at the Trainers Meet Trainers (TMT)®. TMT, initiated 30 years ago, is a unique platform to enable networking and learning from the very best in the world.

Trends in Learning & Development

The Learning & Development team is now being seen not as mere providers of knowledge and skills but more as a strategic business partner, agents of change. They are now viewed as the team who will be shaping the future leaders of tomorrow’s organisation. The Learning & Development team will need to develop their understanding of how L&D activities support the organisation’s strategy and assist the achievement of business objectives. The business leaders in leading organisations expect training professionals to be proactive and aligned to the business.

Measuring Learning Effectiveness

Ultimately, training professionals have to show the success of learning to management. It comes down to demonstrating the value of the training effort. Without a business case and justification for training, no organisation will continue to fund learning.

Tools for Practitioners

The Learning & Development practitioner needs to use a variety of tools and techniques to engage the learner and ensure transfer of learning to the workplace. This is essential as adult learners need to understand and absorb content, including being sensitive to its relevance. There are many innovative tools in the adult learning field that are available to trainers for effective use in their work and in their organisations. Passionate trainers need to be sensitive to adult learning principles, toolkits, and innovative learning tools, based on proven learning theories.

Technology in Training

While globalization, economic pressures, and work-life issues have forced companies to rethink traditional approaches to training and development, recent advances in computing power and connectivity have probably done the most to position technology-based training as a viable alternative to classroom-based learning. Today’s high-end technologies offer greater bandwidth, which means that the programs can transmit more information-rich content and immerse trainees in high fidelity, synthetic training worlds.

You can only attend one workshop as all three are run concurrently.

PRE CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS

C.O.R.E. stands for Closers, Openers, Revisit, and Energize the key ingredient in designing and delivery of training that gets results. Going beyond the three key tests for openers and closer, Bob will take you through 5 powerful openers and closers and you’ll modify them for your own training. Next you’ll look at 49 strategies for revisiting key content. Why? Because research shows that key content must be explored six times for participants to move it from short term memory to long term memory and you can’t use on the job what you can’t remember. You will learn the important difference between review and revisit and why you want to do one but NEVER, the other. Finally you’ll analyze the five ways that Bob has kept the energy up for delivery and how you can use these techniques in your own training. And that’s just in the morning!

In the afternoon you’ll identify the missing link in the ADDIE model – and how to add that link into all of your existing training programs. You’ll also discover the seven ways to remember anything – especially if you think you have a poor memory. Bob will also share the four models that are the foundation of his Creative Training Techniques™ instructor-led, participant centered model – along with 11 strategies you can use to engage any and all of the generations that might be in your training program. Throughout the fast paced day the concepts will be modeled and demonstrated in multiple ways – not just taught. A powerful, comprehensive handout will be a valued resource long after the day is over.

Topics include:• The REAL purpose of training• The missing link in instructional systems design• How do people really learn?• Why we need to use openers, not icebreakers• When to hand out the evaluation form (hint – it is NOT at the end!) • 3 tests of a powerful close• Engaging one or all of the generations in the learning process

• 49 powerful strategies for revisiting content – and why we NEVER review!• 5 strategies for managing energy – even in multiple day or multiple week programs!• The 90/20/8 rule and how it applies to content development• What we need to remember from the Ebinghaus Curve of Forgetting!• How to use props and object lessons to increase retention and impact• 10 tips for classroom presentations (and how to apply them to improving e-Learning!)• and much more! Wow!

Bob has developed and implemented training programs for business, industry, government, and the professions since 1969. Beginning as a representative for Master Education Industries, he received nine promotions in three and one half years, to Senior Vice President. His responsibilities included developing an intensive three-week Master Training Academy covering all phases of sales training, management development, communications, motivation/platform skills and business operations. During his five years as Vice President of Personal Dynamics, Inc., that company grew from less than 4,000 enrollments per year to more than 80,000. He pioneered undergraduate and graduate credit on a national basis. As founder and Chairman of The Bob Pike Group and Creative Training Techniques Press, Bob leads sessions over 150 days per year covering topics of leadership, attitudes, motivation, communication, decision-making, problem-solving, personal and organizational effectiveness, conflict management, team building and managerial productivity. More than 125,000 trainers on five continents have attended the Creative Training Techniques™ workshop. As a consultant, Bob has worked with such organizations as Pfizer, Upjohn, SalesForce.com, Microsoft, Exhibitor Magazine, Hallmark Cards Inc. and IBM. A member of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) since 1972, Bob has been active in many capacities including three National Conference Design Committees, Director of Special Interest Groups, and member of the National Board of Directors. He served on the Board of Directors for the National Speakers Association and the International Alliance of Learning. An outstanding speaker, Bob has presented at regional and national ASTD and Training Conferences to crowds ranging from 300–3,000 people. In 1991 Bob was granted the professional designation of Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) by the National Speakers Association (NSA). This designation has been earned by less than 9% of the more than 3,800 members of the NSA. In 1999 he was honored with the professional designation of CPAE (Council of Peers Award of Excellence) Speakers Hall of Fame (only 46 living speakers hold both designations). Since 1980, he has been listed in the Who’s Who in the Midwest and in the current edition of Who’s Who in Finance and Industry. In 2007, he was voted one of the 20 most influential training professionals by Training Industry and received ISA’s prestigious Thought Leader Award.
