Description:

Engagement Design

Duration: 2 days

Description:

Engagement Design is the training module for those who need to have an understanding of the process of designing and implementing engagement projects. Formally designing engagement programs and approaches is core to the role of engagement practitioners, organisations and communities who wish, or need, to engage with others.

Using IAP2 principles, course participants will discover the key steps in putting together an engagement plan, as well as implementation considerations and evaluation methods.

Good engagement planning and design shapes the engagement approach and selected methodology. It also assists to build the participation of organisations and communities to create better solutions and/or commitment for action.

This module will provide participants with and understanding and practical use of our Design, Plan and Manage (DPM) Model, a core element of the IAP2 Australasia Certificate in Engagement training.

What outcomes can you expect from this training?

By the end of this module, participants will have the skills and knowledge to:

Engagement Methods is an essential course for engagement professionals whose core role involves facilitating engagement activities. It is for those who want to move beyond a limited range of techniques and understand emerging methods.

This two-day course not only covers a broad spectrum of engagement techniques but details the journey from method design to delivery and evaluation. A particular focus is provided to online engagement and emerging methods.

Including the comprehensive IAP2 Australasia Methods Matrix, this training module provides participants with an understanding on how to select a method based on context and purpose.

Conflict in Engagement

Duration: 1 day

Description:

Conflict in Engagement is for people who deal with conflict in their professional careers. Whatever the nature of your role, this training module provides a framework to understand what is conflict in engagement. You will understand what factors contribute to conflict emerging, along with strategies for mitigating and managing conflict, in both face-to-face situations and online environments.

This module is not about avoiding conflict, rather providing skills and tools to manage conflict in a constructive way that maintains integrity for everyone involved, including the engagement process.

Participants will also learn practical skills to deal with difficult engagement situations. There is also a focus on confidence, personal strategies and resilience to assist participants to cope with often stressful situations.

This module is an elective in the IAP2 Australasia Certificate in Engagement.

By the end of this module, participants will have the skills and knowledge to:

• Identify the triggers and context for conflict in engagement scenarios • Understand a range of strategies for responding to difficult situations and

Strategies for Complex Engagement

Duration: 2 days

Description:

Strategies for Complex Engagement is a training module that will challenge the thinking of

experienced community and stakeholder professionals, taking them on a “deep dive” into

complex engagement. Participants will be continually challenged to develop both their

thought processes and engagement processes to a new level. New approaches will be

considered for managing what is often “the unknown”.

Complex, complicated and challenging engagement is considered, the key differences, the

approaches required for each set of circumstances. The module will explore the

characteristics of complex engagement, the root causes, potential strategies, and the

implications of short-term and long-term engagement processes.

Participants will be expected to think deeply about the content and how it can be applied to

their practice, or could have been applied. Sharing of these experiences and thoughts during

the training will be an additional valuable learning tool for all participants.

This module will require a significant time commitment to the training as it includes pre-

reading, pre-survey, and development of case study (during course).

What outcomes can you expect from this training?

By the end of this module, participants will have the skills and knowledge to:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the drivers of complexity • Describe the characteristics of complexity within an engagement process • Identify the key sources of complexity for an engagement process • Understand and map how complexity may change across a project or an organisation

over time • Map how an organisation’s role may change over time, and identify the triggers and

mechanisms for change • Understand the range of strategies for dealing with complex engagement

This one-day elective module explores the principles and tools to design an evaluation of community engagement projects or initiatives. You will be able draw on practical examples to convert theory into action and the ability to create an evaluation plan for a case-study.

This module progress content and the understanding gained through the Engagement Design and/or the Engagement Methods module.

The Engagement Evaluation module provides a valuable learning opportunity for participants and engagement professionals who:

• Design and Evaluate Engagement Projects in their professional careers • Wish to demonstrate a robust process in their engagement practice • Want to obtain the practical skills to create an evaluation framework • Are seeking to build support for the investment in engagement within their

organisation by demonstrating the benefits delivered

What outcomes can you expect from this training?

By the end of this module, participants will have the skills and knowledge to:

• Understand how to scope an engagement evaluation and design an evaluation framework

• Understand the role of key evaluation questions and explore ethical considerations for data collection

Building an Engaging Organisation

Duration: 2 days

Description:

This two-day module is designed specifically for senior practitioners and managers responsible for the community engagement function in your organisation. Learn how to build an organisation with engagement at the heart of how it does business.

This module will assist you in developing a strategy to get your organisation started or get it moving towards becoming an engaging organisation.

There are two major parts to the training session:

1. What is an engaging organisation from the perspective of external points of view?

2. How to move from where you are now to create a more engaging organisation? including:

a. What is your role as senior practitioners in doing that? and b. How to create your organisation’s sustained approach to engagement.

The training session will include a mixture of practical experiences backed up by evidence and dialogue, with opportunities for you to master the engagement tools in the learning environment.

What outcomes can you expect from this training?

By the end of this module, participants will have the skills and knowledge to:

• Understand and identify what is an engaging organisation • Understand your own organisation’s current state of readiness to engage • Appreciate what has changed in the engagement space • Identify the organisational drivers for change in how we look at engagement • Creating foundations of an engaging organisation • Generating momentum and change

Strategies for Dealing with Opposition and Outrage in Public Participation Previously called Emotion, Outrage and Public Participation

Duration: 2 days

Description:

In these challenging times of environmental, health, cultural, economic and social changes there is often emotion and outrage involved when engaging.

Strategies for Dealing with Opposition and Outrage in Public Participation is a training module that will enhance your practice, support your clients and equip you to think about and learn how to apply behaviors that will enhance quality public participation outcomes where stakeholders are emotional or outraged.

When this happens, your stakeholders may not yet be at the place where they can fully participate in a public engagement process. This module will help you plan for those type of circumstances.

During this two-day course, you will discover:

• Six practical strategies for managing outrage • New behaviors that you can apply immediately • A new way of thinking and analyzing outrage • New ways to plan and implement public participation projects where people are

outraged

This course brings together the collective knowledge and experience of outrage management as taught by Dr. Peter Sandman and public participation as practiced by IAP2.

The course is highly interactive and uses a range of adult education methods including using case studies, video clips of Peter, tools and techniques used in public participation, times for personal reflection, group discussion and application of strategies. Participants receive a learning journal to record their reflections and insights and to note what is important for their work.
