First Aid at Work Re-qualification

Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

An AED is programmed to tell rescuers exactly what to do using voice and visual prompts. Rescuers attach adhesive electrode pads to the person’s chest and it automatically analyses the electrical activity of the heart to determine if a “shockable” rhythm is present. With the use of voice prompts and pictures the AED guides rescuers through the resuscitation process, advising when to give CPR. If the AED determines the person’s heart needs a shock, it tells the rescuers to stand back so a shock can be safely given through the adhesive electrode pads attached to the person’s chest. Some AED’s will tell the user to push a button to shock, and others will provide it automatically after giving rescuers an “all clear” warning.

The course will include the following:

The ability to administer cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) promptly and effectively; the ability to administer first aid safely, promptly and effectively to a casualty who is unconscious; the ability to perform CPR in conjunction with the use of an Automated External Defibrillator

Certificates will be awarded to those candidates who show that they are competent in the use of such equipment.

Vocational Qualifications

NVQ Level II – Providing Security Services

A nationally recognised qualification, established for well over 25 years, giving employees the opportunity to demonstrate competence to national standards whilst working within their place of work. On successful completion of the qualification staff will receive an awarding body certificated qualification (EDEXCEL) which demonstrates their continuing professional development. The Providing Security Services NVQ is aimed at static and patrol guards, events security staff, door supervisors, CCTV operators, reception and retail security guards.

To achieve the qualification individuals are required to achieve five mandatory core units (covering reducing risks to health and safety, effective communication, customer service, controlling security incidents and producing documents) and at least three other optional

9

THE SHIELD GUARDING COMPANY LIMITED

units. To complete the NVQ portfolio competence is normally collected or demonstrated through a variety of methods which include:

Observation in the workplace, question and answer sessions, professional discussion, product evidence, accredited prior/learning, witness statements and simulation.

The training and assessment is normally completed within a six month period, during which time the staff will register for the programme, complete an initial skills assessment and develop their own individual learning plan. Over the learning period the evidence will be collected from their workplace and will be combined with observations undertaken by the assessor. Once sufficient evidence has been collected it will be sent for external marking and subsequently successful candidates will receive their qualification.

NVQ Level II – Customer Service

The Customer Service NVQ is suitable for a wide variety of employees in various sectors. The qualification covers key principles of customer service, from active listening techniques, creating the right impressions, keeping accurate customer service records and dealing with difficult customers.

As with the Providing Security Services NVQ the evidence is collected in exactly the same way from the workplace and assessed by the assessor, and finally sent for external marking and certification.

Skills for Security Apprenticeship (we are currently piloting this qualification)

Apprenticeships are a proven way to train staff and gain real business benefits to organisations. The National Apprentice Service (NAS) helps employees reach high levels of competence. There are over 200 different types of Apprenticeships available. The Apprenticeship Framework for the Security Business Sector means that our staff will be learning new skills and knowledge that will lead them towards the successful completion of the apprenticeship at Level II and also gain other qualifications such as Key Skills and Underpinning Knowledge (Technical Certificate).

The apprenticeship is split into sections, and candidates must complete each section to achieve the Apprenticeship. The sections are as follows:

NVQ – Completed exactly the same as the others by assessment and portfolio

Technical Certificate Security Guarding – The four day SIA course already completed by most candidates

Functional Skills – Application of number, communications and IT, which requires the candidates to be present for at least three days training, lasting 5 – 6 hours each day

ERR – Each candidate has to complete a workbook which relates to employment rights and responsibilities

10

THE SHIELD GUARDING COMPANY LIMITED
