Argonne Technical Resources

Several ANL divisions support project work in the areas of facility decommissioning, environmental remediation and related activities for both on-site and off-site work and include:

– Nuclear Engineering (NE) Division – IAEA Training Courses including one for Environmental Remediation/Decommissioning, IAEA Fellows Hosting Support and Technical Support for Decommissioning including Facility Decommissioning Training Support

– Environmental Science (EVS) Division – RESRAD Family of Codes & Technical Support for Environmental Remediation projects

– Nuclear & Waste Management (NWM) Division – Implementation of Waste Management Operations and Deactivation & Decommissioning Operations

– Additional divisions conduct activities such as environmental monitoring, sampling activities and other technical support activities at various sites among the other listed work activities

Argonne Decommissioning Training

Share the experience and knowledge of the decommissioning industry with others new to the field – focus on lessons learned

Integrated approach was chosen using key ANL staff, contractor entities and other industry experienced subject matter experts presenting classroom decommissioning process fundamentals and project case studies; international instructors and content included

Several formats for training courses

– Variety of formats from 1-day workshop site specific formats up to 3-week intensive training course format; ANL site and at customer site sessions including select foreign sessions

– Average 5 to 6 sessions per year; including at least one IAEA event annually

After 19 years (started in 1997) and over 100 training sessions we have over 2200 graduates from over 60 countries

Challenges of Decommissioning & Remediation of

Radioactively Contaminated Sites & Facilities

Many different types of nuclear related (or even other non-nuclear) activities can result in radioactive contamination of facilities and environmental media

Radioactively contaminated sites present numerous challenges:– Site characterization– Risk assessment– Waste management– Establishing clean-up criteria– Cost estimation and work planning and management – Long-term stewardship/monitoring– Stakeholder engagement

This work is technically complex and for some media and in some environments can take decades to complete, and be very expensive

It is critical to develop an adequate competency and capacity in a diverse set of skills to ensure appropriate risk reduction in the most effective manner possible and to address life-cycle management considerations to prevent future events

The IAEA Plays a Major Role in Developing Member

State Capacity

The IAEA supports efforts by its Member States to develop competencies and capacities to manage nuclear and radiological liabilities for facilities related to:

– Radioactive waste management,

– Decommissioning of nuclear facilities, and

– Remediation of contaminated sites

Through its Technical Cooperation (TC) Department, IAEA supports a variety of training opportunities, including courses, workshops, scientific visits, and expert missions

The IAEA also has established a number of ‘networks’ for promoting the exchange of expertise and experience across a variety of related topics, including:

– Decommissioning (IDN)

– Environmental remediation (ENVIRONET)

– Near-surface disposal (DISPONET)

– Waste characterization (LABONET)

For the past six years annually, the IAEA has partnered with Argonne to provide training on facility decommissioning and environmental characterization and remediation.

Objective: provide an overview of management concepts, approaches, methodologies, and tools for ensuring appropriate and cost-effective D&D and remediation action; share knowledge of past industry experiences

Co-funded by the IAEA (IDN and ENVIRONET) and the U S State Department

Participants to date:

– Over 40 countries representatives from 6 continents

– Diverse cross-section of industries and staff, including operators, regulators, educators, consultants and researchers

– Varying levels of experience including entry level, junior staff, mid-level managers, and more senior individuals that are changing careers or responsibilities
