Transit Bus Pollution

Grace Duan

EnACT 2014-2015

3

We know about car pollution.

4

So we ride buses instead. Public transportation can be used to reduce air pollution caused by personal automobiles, but the buses themselves must be clean.

5

The exhaust from the diesel buses contains over 40 toxic air contaminants, soot, carcinogens and ozone-damaging compounds.

6

There are affordable and available solutions such as particulate filters. They are required on all brand new buses, but the vast majority of CTA and PACE buses in Chicago still do not follow these measures.

7

The air pollution affects the civilian population of Illinois, especially in the Chicago metropolitan area. The soot particles are known for causing heart attacks, lung cancer, strokes, and even death.

8

The commuters who rely on public transportation to get to and from work are stakeholders as well. An small increase in prices may add up to be a significant amount if they commute daily.

9

Major public transit companies such as CTA and PACE are also very affected by the pollution regulations in terms of cost and time of replacing filters.

10

The Illinois Campaign to Clean Up Diesel Pollution has sent nearly 200 emails to the state legislators asking them to support the Diesel Anti-Idling Bill. Fines for violators would increase from $50 to $90 for the first offense and from $150 to $500 for subsequent offenses. A portion of the fine will be given to local governments s an incentive to enforce the law.

11

Vienna became the first city in the world to use electric buses (eBus) in the effort to reduce transit pollution. They are emission-free, extremely quiet, and use significantly less energy than conventional diesel-powered buses. The batteries, which are charged overnight, power not only the drive system but also the onboard electronics, heating, and AC.

12

The Northeast Diesel Collaborative is an effort to reduce diesel emissions from municipal fleets in the heavily populated metropolitan areas of New York and Boston. There are a few laws that we can model our EnACT bills off of in the northeastern states.
