- 3Intro bit..Happy New Year to each and every one of you!! May 2009 be full of opportunities to dress up and have fun.Hi girls

Well first of all let me wish you a very Happy New Year and hope you all had a wonderful Christ-mas. My Christmas was a quiet and painful affair, not only my broken leg to contend with but a bad bout of flu and a tooth extrac-tion!!

Although I haven’t made any res-olution, 2009 for me means look-ing positively to the future. I am now out of the leg cast and mov-ing around on crutches – I think give me a couple of months and I shall be back in my heels!!!

Breaking my leg put paid to my usual annual pilgramage to Florida which meant that we had a Christmas tea party. Yay!

It was really great to see so many of you and looking so fabulous

too. Pictures from the evening can be found towards the back page.

Next tea night will be the 19th January – hope to see you then.

Hope you like the new look news-letter, I thought it could do with a revamp!!

LoveTeela-Jane

- 4Annual DoUnfortunately due to a complete lack of response, I am thinking of postponing the annual do in January until later on in year – perhaps a summer ball.

Could you please therefore let me know within the next week whether you plan to come to the do on 24th January so I have an idea of the numbers involved?

I will send out a separate email and invitation to try and get an indication of numbers.

Hemlines & lipstickIn fashion history, the correlation between skirt lengths and financial markets is striking.

During the social and financial boom of the roaring 1920’s, hemlines on flapper dresses shot up to reveal women’s legs for the first time, how daring... . But, at the time of the 1929 Wall St crash, dresses dropped back to the floor with legs not being bare again until the prosperous 1960’s and the era of the mini-skirt.The “swinging 60’s” were followed by the recession of the 70’s and Mary Quant’s minis gave way to the return of the floor-skimming skirt before the resurgent 1980’s and 90’s saw the mini-skirt and “little black dress” again back in vogue...

- The rule does not always apply but according to Alexander Koda (fashion historian and curator at the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum in New York) fashion designers do tend to have a feeling for the mood of society - and when people feel psychologically battered and pessimistic there is a tendency to “cover up” whether that means long sleeves, higher necklines, long skirts or opaque tights.

Although the recent economic downturn has been relatively sudden - perhaps fashion designers new something we didn’t....The 2008 “Summer Collection” (shown in Oct 2007) was dominated by full-length looks.. From classic Chanel to Christopher Kane and Stella McCartney, legs were nowhere to be

seen - with skirts and dresses falling to ankle length, a look that is now starting to trickle down to the high street...

There is also a strong but slightly different association between economic gloom and the sale of cosmetics... - the so-called “Lipstick effect”.

A phenomenon that was first identified in the Great Depression.

Between 1929 and 1933, industrial production in the United States halved but sales of cosmetics rose.

In the US the number of people working in the cosmetics industry actually increased in the recessions of 1990 and 2001 as the demand for make-up rose.

The theory is that during periods of general despondency and financial crisis women try to cheer themselves up by spending money on small luxuries... (Apparently after the “9/11 attack” sales of lipstick in the US doubled...)

L’Oreal sales were up by over % in the first half of 2008 - a definite “red alert” for the economy.

Here is the lovely Alyson..........This month the Transpose girl of the month is Alyson. Alyson was due to come for her make-over in November but I had to cancel because of my hospital stay.

We managed to re-arrange the appointment for December even though I was still hobbling around on crutches.

Alyson was so patient with me and did a lot of running around, fetching this and that, putting things away, grabbing wigs and even making the tea!!

Thank you Alyson, it was great having you around for the day.
