Day 5

Private Cruise from Naxos to Santorini with a tour of Koufonissia, Schinoussa

& Ios on Targa 37

Hop aboard your private rib boat to discover the unique Cycladic Islands on your way to Santorini.

Schinoussa

We will start our day by visiting Schinoussa. Schinoussa is located at the center of the Small Eastern

Cyclades island group, south of Naxos and north-east of Irakliá. It is a tiny island with three villages:

Hóra, Messaria and Mersini. It took its name after the bushy plant lentisk (Schino in Greek) that

flourishes on the island. Mersini, the island’s port, is a haven for small boats, preferred by many across

the Aegean; during the summer it is a popular mooring spot for sailing enthusiasts. For nature lovers, a

hiking trail starting from the port leads you around the entire island in only two hours.

Page 8: Travel Itinerary for your trip to Greece Created by Mina Agnos · Day 5 Private Cruise from Naxos to Santorini with a tour of Koufonissia, Schinoussa & Ios on Targa 37 Hop aboard

Koufonisia

From there, head to Koufonissia. Koufonisia is a small group of two islets; these are Pano Koufonisi

and Kato Koufonisi, and they are separated by a narrow 200 m. wide strait. They were named

Koufonisia (meaning Hollow islands) because of the existence of huge caves which gave the

impression that the islands were hollow to pirates who viewed them from a distance. Nearby is the

deserted Keros island. It has been designated as an archaeological site under protection, as major

Cycladic Art finds have been unearthed there.

Pano Koufonisi is the only populated islands. Koufonisia are a favorite destination for those who seek

to sheltered golden sand beaches, small natural pools of turquoise waters, feasts in the original ‘island

way’ and seafood fresh from the sea.

Page 9: Travel Itinerary for your trip to Greece Created by Mina Agnos · Day 5 Private Cruise from Naxos to Santorini with a tour of Koufonissia, Schinoussa & Ios on Targa 37 Hop aboard

Ios

Finally, you will also head to Ios. Ios or Nios, as the locals call it, is one of the most beautiful islands of

the Cyclades, like a flower, as its name “Ion” denotes. According to the ancient tradition, Íos was the

homeland of Homer’s mother and the final resting place of the great epic poet.

Ios is home to stunning untouched corners that are top choices for divers seeking clear emerald

waters. A number of beaches are only accessible by shepherd roads, making sea connecting the

easiest for exploring these spectacular corners.

From Ios, we will head to Santorini for your disembarkation.

features a great number of remarkably well-preserved remains of vibrant Frescoes and artifacts.

Day 15

Day 2: Nafplio, Diakofto, Kalavryta & Menalon Mountains

Today, you will start your tour by heading to Diakofto to enjoy a scenic railway ride to the historic town of Kalavryta. One of the best journeys to experience in the Peloponnese, this train takes travelers to Kalavryta through the dramatic Vouraïkos Gorge, where you can marvel at its reddish cliffs seemingly closing in on the train. The line switches back and forth under a leafy canopy of plane trees, clinging to a narrow ledge overhanging the rushing rapids below, and passing through seven curving tunnels along the way.

Built by an Italian company between 1889 and 1895, the railway was a remarkable feat of engineering for its time, with only a handful of equivalents around the world (most notably in the Swiss Alps). Between 2007 and 2009 the entire rails and cog sections were completely replaced, and four new modern trains were constructed to replace the former carriages. The original steam engines that first plied the route can still be seen outside Diakofto and Kalavryta stations

After a tour of the historic town of Kalavryta and a break for lunch, we will head to Menalon Mountains, which features a diverse landscape of rugged mountains, canyons, and verdant valleys.

From there, we will head back to Nafplion.

Day 16

Day 3: Sparta & Mystras

Today, we will start our day by heading south and visiting the Mystras and the ancient city of Sparta. We will start by visiting Sparta, one of the most prominent Greek city-states throughout the Archaic and Classical periods that is renowned for its military prowess. Here you will see the bronze statue of the courageous Spartan king, Leonidas, along with the remains of an ancient palace with archaic inscriptions dating back to the Mycenaean Age and the historic theater, built around 30-20 BC.

From there, we will head to Mystras, where you will see the medieval ruins of the Byzantine city of Mystras on the steep foothills of Mt. Taygetos, an awe-inspiring UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known as the “Wonder of the Morea”, it was built as an amphitheater in 1249 and in 1448, the last emperor of Byzantium, Constantine XI Palaeologos, was crowned here. Overlooking the modern village of Mystras, the site features a fortress, a palace, ruined monasteries, and in particularly, a church that houses rare frescoes dating between 1348 and 1380.

After your tour, we will head to Neapoli for your stay.

Day 17 Day 4: Monvemvasia & Diros Caves

We will explore Monemvasia and the impressive Diros Caves on our tour today. It is hard to imagine a more mystical setting than Monemvasia, whose walls and Byzantine churches remain intact from medieval times. Carved from the limestone of a small rock cut off from the east coast of the Peloponnese by an earthquake in 375AD, which separated it from the mainland and left it about 100 meters above sea level, this medieval castle town is linked to the mainland by a causeway. Monemvasia is Europe’s only castle that has never ceased being inhabited and has been a strategic fortress for the Byzantines, Franks, Venetians and Ottomans. Cars are left at the main entrance, making this an ideal place to enjoy a leisurely stroll along its cobbled paths and admire the mansions and Byzantine Churches while enjoying a view of the spectacular Myrtoan Sea. Visit the Christos Elkomenos Church, which features the heavily guarded icon of the Crucifixion, regarded as one of the most impressive of the Palaiologian Renaissance as well as the 16th Centrury Mosque that houses the town’s archaeological artifacts. From Monemvasia, we will make our way back to Athens.

From Monemvasia, we will head to Diros Caves. These extraordinary caves, inhabited since Neolithic times and systematically explored from 1949. Abandoned as human habitation in 4 BC after an earthquake, the caves weren't rediscovered until around 1895.

From there, we will head to Kyllini for your stay.
