• Create a Treasure Chest

• Using construction paper and a manila folder, create a flat treasure chest that can open. Decorate the outside to make it look like a treasure chest and write the title and author of the novel somewhere on it.

• We will add “treasure” to the chest as we read. To begin, you can go ahead and begin to create the following items:

• A flip chart for the following characters:

– Jim Hawkins

– Billy Bones

– Long John Silver

– Dr. Livesey

– Ben Gunn

– Squire Trelawney

– Captain Smollett

• Include in this flip chart a physical description for each, a list of personality traits for each, a quote that shows each character’s personality, and an important/significant action taken by each. You will NOT finish this chart until the end.

• A treasure map with 23 points. You will write a brief summary of each chapter on the map as we go so that we may “travel” through the book. Try to create backgrounds on the map that relate to what happens in the story. For example, if there is a huge storm in one chapter, the same area of the map might indicate a hurricane. Note: This is not necessarily a map of where the characters are in the novel, but is instead a map of the events in the novel.

• Pirate Vocabulary – on “coins” or “jewels,” write pirate terms/phrases and what they mean (or words that are strongly associated with pirates) as we come to them in the book. In Chapters 1 and 2, two words that you might write down are “seadog” and “cutlass.”

• Be creative! There is not one specific way to create all of these items or to keep them in the treasure chests. You will continue to add to it throughout the reading of Treasure Island, so bring it each day.

Chapters 5 and 6 Add this assignment to your treasure chest:

Answer the following questions in complete sentences.

When you finish, someone who reads your answers should not be able to ask questions like “why?” or

“how?” or “what about this?”

1. Why do you think Jim trusts Dr. Livesey with the oilskin bag over the officer?

2. Why are the Squire and the doctor so excited about the map? Do you think they plan to return any treasure found to its rightful owners, or keep it all? With either case, how are they different from pirates?

3. What do you think would have happened if Pew had not been trampled by the horses? Would Jim have revealed himself; would Pew have played innocent; etc?
