Karen Desmond Chairperson

Last year was exciting for the Education Committee. Through all of your support during last year’s silent auction we raised a record of $13,000.

We completed the 2nd year of our 5-year commitment to fund the You Be the Chemist Challenge (YBTC) held in March of last year. For those of you who are not familiar, this challenge is a competition that starts at the school level and continues with local, state, and national challenge competitions. The Chemical Education Foundation relies on volunteers to coordinate school participation and plan the local and state challenges, so our commitment to this organization is greatly appreciated.

In addition to YBTC, the Education Committee has decided to donate an addi-tional $1,500 to sponsor YBTC Essential Elements workshops, which should be able to cover 3 workshops. This program is designed to provide K-8 educa-tors with methods for teaching chemistry concepts through hands on learning. Our spon-sorship will help in the purchas-ing of materials, transportation, and paying the instructors. Amy Andrews attended the Silent Auction as a represen-tation for the organization. Amy is a certified instructor for the Essential Elements work-shop and teacher at Lincoln Elementary in Chicago. The 1st workshops are scheduled for December 13th and 20th.

We have also donated $2,000 to a school in need, Elgin High

also travels during the summer to instruct teachers K–12 prac-tical applications of chemistry. Along with being a polymer ambassador, a master teacher for ASM, a STEM educator, countless workshops, she was recently elected High School Ambassador for the American Assoc. of Chemistry Teachers.

Scholarship winners. This year we awarded three Members Only Scholarships. Our 1st winner was awarded to Louis DePasquale III. Louis received a $1000 scholarship. Louis is currently attending University of Dayton in their Chemical Engineering Honors Program. During his HS career he made the Deans list all semesters for both his SR and JR years while playing varsity football and wrestling. He could not attend the silent auction, but his dad accepted the scholarship on his behalf.

Our second winner is Lauren Swain. Lauren received a $1500 scholarship. Lauren is a senior at South HS in Downers Grove. Lauren is in the top 2% of her class ranking 8 out of 591 and ACT composite of 34. She would like to pursue a career in Pediatric Medicine.

Karen Desmond receiving her Honorary Membership

School. They have provided us with a wish list of several items for their chemistry lab such as student lab kits, wash bottles, etc.

Through the ISTA (Illinois Science Teacher Association) we received several applications and choose two that stood out. Our 1st award of $750 went to Kerrie Rovito. Kerrie is a 6th-8th grade science teacher at Hamilton Elementary School in Chicago. Kerrie works with teachers from all grade levels to align the science curriculum to the Next Generation Science Standards as well as traveling around the U.S. to train middle school science teachers on how to use a particular science curric-ulum for computer science. She has spent several weeks in Israel on an archaeological dig to write a curriculum for middle school students, skyping with students, and blogging about the dig.

The next $750 teacher award went to Sherri Rukes. Sherri is an AP Chemistry teacher at Libertyville High School. She has received over 15 grants to help make chemistry come alive for students and was name a Golden Apple Fellow for Outstanding Teaching. Sherri

O u r t h i r d w i n n e r i s Samantha Biel. Samantha received a $2500 scholarship. Samantha is currently attending University of Nebraska in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. Samantha’s ACT composite was 33 and her academic achievements include George Beadle Scholarship Recipient, Nebraska Legends Scholar, Illinois State Scholar and National Honors Society.
