The purchase of Mehren Rubber, to join the Engineered Systems busi- ness of Trelleborg, is part of the com- pany policy to expand in the offshore business. Mehren is a niche-oriented contract producer of down-hole packers for Easywell, a subsidiary of Halliburton. Its main product is Swell Packer, a down-hole packer designed to swell when in position. The company has also inaugurat- ed a newly constructed manufactur- ing facility for Sealing Solutions in the Shanghai region. The increased production capacity from this new plant means that Trelleborg is now better able to meet increasing demand from industry in China and the rest of Asia. ‘We are committed to expanding aggressively in Asia,’ says Trelleborg President and CEO, Peter Nilsson. ‘This facility continues our strategic investments in the region, and it will be followed by others, in China and in other Asian countries.’ It will have about 100 employees by the end of the year and the plant, which is designed to meet stringent environmental standards, will have total floor space of 10 000 m 2 . It will produce many proprietary products for the aerospace, chemical process- ing, semiconductors, and oil and gas industries, and also provide technical support, design, product develop- ment and testing facilities.
