DESCRIPTION

It’s undeniable; today’s workforces are freer to work from anywhere they want to work. Employers expect people to be productive while on the move, which requires technology that empowers people to work from anywhere in the world, on whatever device they choose. As a result, workers are fueling the demand for mobile solutions. Employers must respond with responsive products. These platforms understand what screen size is being used to access the platform. Responsive platforms automatically provide context and will appropriately juxtapose the right data being displayed, with the right controls, on any device and on any browser, at speeds we’ve never experienced before.

What is Responsive?

The next frontier for developers of modern applicant tracking systems (and HR Technology in general) is to develop solutions that perform well on any device, even those that have not been invented yet. Until recently, the solution has been to create a different product for every device. This is commonly referred to as an “App Strategy”: developing different products for an iPad, iPhone and Android App,as well as a desktop version. In 2014, the market will benefit from the emergence of universalplatforms that are capable of adapting to any screen size. These “responsive” products are settingthe bar for usability, accessibility and user adoption rates.

Responsive design is the newest approach to the development of technology applications and websites. Responsive applications respond to the user’s behavior and environment based on screen size, platform and orientation. For example, as a user switches from their laptop to iPad, the application will automatically switch to accommodate for resolution and image size.

Users Demand Mobility

Scrolling, zooming, pinching andsquinting aren’t options anymore.

For applicant tracking systems, one fixed-width layout of data simply does not work anymore. This means the width is fixed at a specific number of pixels (typically 800 pixels) and doesn't change no matter how big or small the user’s screen is. Given the variety of screen variations that people workon today, fixed-width pages are preventing the effective use of Applicant Tracking Systems. While some vendors are correct in asserting that their platforms can be accessed on mobile devices, they mean that their product can be viewed on mobile devices. However, this doesn’t mean that users can actually work on mobile devices. Scrolling, zooming, pinching and squinting are not viable options for users anymore.
