Citizens are putting more demands on their governments, not only in regard to how services are provided, but in how efficiently government

operations are run.

What is cloud?

A “government cloud” mirrors the system used by Google and other large companies, which put cheap

“server” computers into huge data centers to provide computing power on demand which is

delivered where it is needed via the internet.

That would be provided to government departments and local government, replacing the aging and inefficient

systems used in many of the hundreds of data centers presently used and frequently run at far below their capacity

because they are dedicated to one department.

UK government creates G-Cloud

The UK government has unveiled a sweeping strategy to create its own internal "cloud computing" system as part

of a radical plan that it claims could save up to £3.2bn a year from an annual bill of at least £16bn.

The key part of the new strategy, outlined by the Cabinet Office minister Angela Smith, will be

the concentration of government computing power into a series of about a dozen highly secure data centres,

each costing up to £250m to build, which will replace more than 500 presently used by central government,

police forces and local authorities.
