LEADERSHIP REPORT

Last Wednesday the Primary and Year 10 students were treated to an entertaining rendition of “Alpacas with Maracas” as a part of the National Simultaneous Storytime event. Ms O’Leary was the story teller and students from her Year 3/4 class acted the story out with great joy and energy. The class have also performed their play to the kindy students on Tuesday.

TBAS had a fabulous immersion in culture as we began Reconciliation Week with a whole school event in front of the artwork by Vera Richards with the artist herself! Vera shared the story behind the artwork, showed us the recently launched book Barngarlidhi Manoo (Speaking Barngarla Together), gave us insight into the impact of the Stolen Generations on her father and family connections and concluded with a smoking ceremony to take us forward. Classes were then able to continue exploring the theme of ‘Grounded In Truth, Walk Together With Courage’ throughout the week.

Our school receives valuable support from the Department for Education Port Lincoln Regional Office team for the different needs of our students. We have visits from the Speech Pathologist, Behaviour Support Coach, Absentee Officer, Educational Psychologists and Special Educator. Staff work with this team towards achieving positive outcomes for our students.

Thank you to the Year 4/5class who hosted the assembly on Thursday 23rd

May. We really enjoyed sharing their learning journey so far this term. The Learning Disposition Awards were present to the following students: Grit – Maxtin Richardson, Brodie Burford, Skyla Modra, Shannay Povey, Breanna Anesbury Resilience – Harper Franks, Xavier Lawrie, Marnie Carpenter, Rylan Jefferson, Amieka Lawson Self-Regulation – Tasha Tierney, Alya Carr, James Carr, River Baillie, Alby McDonald The assembly yesterday was hosted very capably by the Year 3/4 class who showed aspects of their recent learning. The Learning Disposition Awards for this assembly were received by the following students: Grit – Ethan Lawrie, Stella McCallum, Narrah Tierney, Poppy Stoddard, Ashlee Cave Resilience – Xavier McPharlin, Declan Carr, Jaiden Jefferson, Ryder Franks, Archer Trezise Self-Regulation – Xavier Russ, Thea Foster, Josiah Lawrie, Matilda Arnsby, Tyree Burgoyne.

On Thursday 27th June, the R-12 Student Voice representatives and the teacher supervisors are organising a student well-being afternoon consisting of 3 half hour sessions for students to participate in, according to their choices. We are looking for family/community volunteers to lead these groups. Each activity leader would lead a small group of students of varying ages

in a well-being activity for a half an hour each. There will be teacher supervision as well. Examples that the students have suggested include cooking, handicrafts, wood work, hair, nails, hand massage, face painting, yoga, art/craft, fitness and sporting activities. If anyone would be willing to lead a well-being activity for the students please let the front office know at the school.

R-6 Tree Planting

There was great excitement amongst the Junior Primary students (and staff) on Thursday for their excursion to Port Lincoln to see the theatre production of “The Gruffalo”. This year is the 20

th anniversary of when this

engaging picture book was first published. The students and staff really enjoyed the experience.

The Primary students (R-6) will be tree planting near Lipson with Geraldine Turner and her team on Thursday 20 June. Students will be bussed out and back. This is an annual venture which fits in so well with the Australian Curriculum priority of Sustainability.

Next week our Senior Students are fortunate to have presentations by the Uni of SA who are travelling to our region to meet with students and discuss future study and career options. The sessions are tailored to the three cohorts of years 10, 11 and 12 and will explore the many and varied flexibilities there now are to cater to students. It certainly has changed from the traditional approach of the past!

TBAS recently participated in the Biggest Morning Tea with thanks to Sarah Southern who hosted the event for our staff team and raised a significant amount to contribute to this worthy cause. What a delicious way to make an impact!

Huge congratulations to the students from TBAS who have been selected and soon head to Adelaide to represent our school and Lower EP in SAPSASA. Our sporting superstars are Henry Challenger, Brody Stratford, Nick Cave and Harvey Masson for football and Taryn Beinke and Maisie Curtis for netball.

We are inviting expressions of interest to register in the Employable Ancillary Register in the area of Grounds/Maintenance (GSE). At TBAS we would like to have a registered person that we can call on to backfill when our regular grounds person is either on leave or ill. Please provide to the school your expression of interest that includes any experience, availability and contact details. To be registered with the Department for Education you would need to meet the minimum requirements as below: Employees cannot commence employment without an approved Employable Ancillary Register (EAR) application, DCSI Relevant History Screening, Responding to Abuse and Neglect Certificate and Birth Certificate. It’s been a busy term so far, with lots of things happening. I really enjoyed being involved in the netball and football carnival in Port Lincoln a few weeks ago. Quite a few things were discussed as well as us being informed of the latest developments at out school.

Site Improvement plan by staff was presented. This is a live document where staff are consistently reviewing overall student performances especially in literacy and numeracy and implementing new ideas to teach these essential tools to all students.

The school grounds continues to improve thanks to dedicated Dave Elson as well as Roxanne Richardson and Shane Masson. We have had a recent meeting to look at the great progress to date this year and identify our next priority areas.

Discussion about improving and making year 7-12 students more accountable for their work and meeting deadlines - a skill needed in post-secondary studies, the workplace and life in general. A policy to set out the expectations to guide student and families in this process was presented. This will come into effect from Semester 2 and be consistent across all subjects. Any assignment set by a teacher comes with an opportunity to draft. If a draft hasn’t been submitted by the suggested date then an alert to student and parent/s allows the student to keep on track. This stops that really bad habit of leaving things to the last minute or ‘cramming’. Certainly inspired me!

Susan McLean is Australia’s leading cyber safety expert and educator and coming our way in November. Her website cybersafetysolutions.com.au has accessible factsheets regarding internet use, cyber bullying, sexting and more. Really useful information.

Also we got to see the new format primary school report cards which students will receive end of this Term. Great to see ongoing improvements in response to previous feedback. Thanks again to the staff.

On Thursday the 30

th of May R/1 & 1/2 class went to Port Lincoln on the bus. We had

lunch at Flinders' park and played on the bright green grass. Then we went back in the bus and went to the Nautilus Theatre to watch the Gruffalo because we are learning about the Gruffalo. It had lots of singing and it had some funny parts in it. We went back on the bus and went back to school. My favourite character was the Mouse because she is clever. Isabella Arnsby On the 30

th of May in Port Lincoln we went on a bus to see the Gruffalo. Both JP classes went because we

have been learning about the Gruffalo. My favourite character was owl because he was funny. Scarlett Southern

Thank you to the community of Tumby Bay! Our Student Voice Bake Sale on Wednesday was a bit hit and we raised $452.95 for Senior Secondary room improvements! Well done to the students for their organisation and to the donors of the sale goods.

Stronger, more effective and transparent screening laws for people working or volunteering with children have been introduced in South Australia. The new screening laws were recommended as part of federal and South Australian royal commissions, to help keep children safe in our communities. The new laws mean that from 1 July 2019 everyone working or volunteering with children must have a valid child-related check. Also changing from 1 July 2019 is the state’s current system for child-related employment screenings, which will be replaced with a working with children check (WWCC). This new check is coming in to better protect your children and make sure that people working or volunteering with children are suitable. It does this through a monitored and more robust assessment of a person’s eligibility to work or volunteer with children. Because the check is monitored, immediate action can be taken if a person is charged with a concerning offence. The new check covers off on a person’s national criminal history including all spent convictions, pending and non-conviction charges, and other disciplinary and child protection information. A WWCC is valid for five years and is portable across roles and organisations throughout South Australia. Current, valid child-related employment screening checks done by DHS/DCSI will be recognised as a WWCC until they expire. There is also a 12 month transition period for anyone with a National Police Certificate assessed by their organisation, with the certificate valid till 1 July 2020. For most people, this means they don’t need to do anything to be ready for the new law starting on 1 July 2019. For more information about the new check visit the DHS website.

It’s been a busy start to term 2 during the Wellbeing for Learning lessons. Since the beginning of the term students have worked in their own classes and their buddies with a focus on growth mindset and grit. GRIT- there was a focus on how gritty learners experience lots of success. They persevere and keep going when learning and life get tough. Students practiced some of the following sayings.

Take the time to go beyond your best

Take responsibility for your learning

In week 4 buddies got together and were given the opportunity to practice a challenging skill. Students engaged in activities where they were required to show GRIT in order to be successful. Some of the tasks included mastering the cup song, juggling, making card stacks by careful balancing and practicing reading skills. It was wonderful to walk around the school and see so many happy and determined faces enjoying the challenge that was presented to them. We hope to share some of these skills as a whole school in week 9. The overarching aim of the Wellbeing for Learning lessons is to continue building a strong community connection between our students. We acknowledge that the feeling of

connectedness is a protective factor for students’ wellbeing and the TBAS staff see this as an essential aspect for our school. We are proud to em-brace our R-12 community and see this as a wonderful part of our site. The Kindness committee has also continued to meet and have come up with more ideas to spread kindness in our school and the community. This committee would like to thank the Bendigo Bank who are in the process of donating a buddy bench for our students to use. There will be further details about this in the coming weeks. The next focus……. The remainder of the term will see classes focusing on increasing their understanding of the brain and how they can gain more control of their learning through self-regulation skills. Students will build an understand-ing of the brain and the different elements that affect our emotions and behaviours. They will engage in a variety of activities such as mindfulness, relaxation and breathing techniques to learn more about regulating

ourselves ready for learning and life.

On Monday our team of six STEM* Ambassadors (Yr 7s Tennent & Luke, Yr 8 Alisha, Yr 9s Mia & Asha, Yr 10 Tahlia) joined me and about 200 others from around SA at the Adelaide Oval William Margarey Conference Room for a STEM Ambassador Connections Day. It was a valuable day for these students with a range of activities including listening to keynote speaker, Prof Lindsey Connor – Dean of Flinders Uni, on the importance of STEM education for our world’s future. They also collaborated with students from other schools to brainstorm the United Nations’ “5 Direct Drivers for Change in Nature” (see the graphic with the collective result). It was interesting to hear from other STEM Action Teams on the work they’ve been doing in STEM and it’s promotion. Our 2018 Ambassadors, Mia Challinger and Alisha Lawrie did a great job of delivering our team’s presentation to the large audience. Proud of our students!

The Year 12 class of 2009 held their 10 year

reunion on Friday 17 May which included a tour of

the school. 9 old scholars out of the class of 13

returned and it was great to hear what they have

achieved over the last 10 years. They were

impressed with the library (as it wasn’t built when

they were at school), the Rec Centre, the new

toilets in the corridor and in the middle school, the

improvements with the grounds and the chicken

house. Specific rooms brought back many memories as they walked through the school. It was also great to

welcome back former staff members Ann Bawden and Jane Charlton too.

Here’s what they’ve been up to:

Jennifer Nixon, travelled overseas, married, home owner, Nurse at Port Lincoln Hospital.

Lachlan Elliot, Studied, lives in Adelaide, works in disability childcare.

Lisa James, studied Child Studies, married, home owner, working in the family business at the Tumby Bay

Caravan Park, 1 baby boy.

Steven Carr, Refrigeration Mechanic, married with two kids, working on family farm/shearing.

Emily Noske-Cummins, studied Bachelor of Arts, Living in Adelaide, working at an Auction House in Unley for

the last 4.5 years.

Amy Russ, completed a Hotel Management Degree, travelled and worked overseas, based in Adelaide, loves

travelling health and photography.

Alex Shepherd, studied Bachelor of Engineering (Aerospace and Mechanical) at the University to Adelaide,

working in Melbourne at five rings aerospace.

Jennifer White, Moved to Perth to work in the mines, currently living in Adelaide working at Roxby for BHP

driving dump trucks underground.

Kate Matthews, studied Bachelor of Media, travelled, engaged, living in Tumby Bay.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENTS —Obstacle day –Ninja warrior

On Monday we saw Kalani working with others to set up her Ninja warrior obstacles as they negotiated the environment, they ensured the safety and wellbeing of themselves and others. The obstacles combine gross and fine motor movements, stretching, jumping and balance which created a thrill of participating and positive experiences.

PFD — Pupil Free Day—Wednesday 22nd May In the morning we saw children quietly engaged in

construction, set up a Hospital and a very neat Dr’s desk. Bandaging was so well done that the children tricked Pei as she came to relieve me for lunch. In the afternoon there

was an interest in a Clown Circus. Kindergarten children joined us later in the day, making glitter bags & playing

outside—”I call over” A snippet of photos so you can glimpse what a wonderful

day we enjoyed.
