The seeds of the Declaration document go back to June 7, 1776 when Richard Henry Lee, under instruction from the Virginia Delegation, introduced, in Congress, the following Resolution: Resolved, That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved. That it is expedient forthwith to take the most effectual measures for forming foreign Alliances. That a plan of confederation be prepared and transmitted to the respective Colonies for their consideration and approbation. A vote was postponed until July 2 so that members might receive instructions from their colonies. Three committees were formed to address the 3 parts of the Resolution. John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston and Thomas Jefferson comprised the committee to draft a Declaration of Independence. After reaching agreement on the general framework of the document, the committee gave the job of writing the draft to Thomas Jefferson. With minor changes the Committee presented the draft to Congress. A resolution of independence was adopted on July 2. Over 80 revisions were made to the committee’s draft among them all language about slavery was striken as well as adding the words of Lee’s Resolution to the ending. The Declaration was approved on July 4, 1776. So as you thank Thomas Jefferson, on this July 4, for his stirring words, give a special shout out to Richard Henry Lee as well. Color Guard Goes to Mt. Left unsaid here is her final vote for first place. Color Guard members that participated: Bill Aurand, Rudy Byrd, Rick Collins, Lance Dickinson, Dale Drew, Al Niemeyer, John Niemeyer and Jim Williamson. Supporting the Guard were Ladies Auxiliary members Marcia Aurand, Bette Dickinson and Theresa Williamson. A special thanks to non members: John Patla, who kept the marchers in step with the chapters new period correct drum; Jeff Coleman, who is working on becoming our newest member; and Skip Harrington and Brett Kooistra. The parade was well attended and could be considered a success by both the participants and spectators. It was a great, and wet, fourth of July 2015! A Message from the President

We celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence on

July 4th

. The seeds of the Declaration document go back to June

7, 1776 when Richard Henry Lee, under instruction from the

Virginia Delegation, introduced, in Congress, the following

It's was deja Vu all over again as the Tucson Chapter Color

Guard took first place and finished in a driving downpour at the

Summerhaven 4th of July parade. Supported by the Chapter

Ladies Auxiliary and several outside individuals, the Color

Guard gave a snappy "eyes right" as they passed the

Summerhaven reviewing stand. Of note, in the reviewing stand,

was Color Guard Commander Rick Collins' wife, Barbara, who

was drafted into the judging position when a vacancy suddenly

appeared. Left unsaid here is her final vote for first place.

Color Guard members that participated: Bill Aurand, Rudy Byrd,

Rick Collins, Lance Dickinson, Dale Drew, Al Niemeyer, John

Niemeyer and Jim Williamson. Supporting the Guard were

Ladies Auxiliary members Marcia Aurand, Bette Dickinson and

Theresa Williamson. A special thanks to non members: John

Former Tucson Member Don Connelly

Receives the War Service Medal

Saguaro Chapter Compatriot Bob Archibald went to Don's

home this afternoon and presented him the War Service

Certificate and Medal for both WWII and the Korean Wars.

He was dressed up in his SAR "uniform". I took pictures

with him and his medal but forgot to get one holding the

certificate. My error as he was having trouble standing and

guess I got districted. He is a past secretary at the Tucson

Chapter as well as a member of Saguaro. He will be 90

years old this Dec.

We discussed some of his time in the service. He enlisted in

the Navy out of high school and served aboard the USS LST

755. He participated in the invasion of Lingayen Gulf,

Philippines in Jan 1945 as a part of a 90 ship Task Force.

After the war was over his ship transported Japanese

prisoners of war from Shanghai,China to Sasabe,Japan. As a

navy reservist, he was called back to active duty service

during the Korean War. He served as a Yeoman Third Class

at the Navy Weapons Factory in Washington D.C.

We have a drum!

The Tucson Chapter has a marching drum for our Color Guard.

The paint job was based on the drum used at the Battle of

Guilford Courthouse. The drum and drumsticks were reportedly

carried by Luther W. Clark.

May Chapter Meeting Notes

The Tucson Chapter held it's final board and breakfast meeting

before the summer break on May 16th , 2015 at the Old Pueblo

Grill. The Flowing Wells JROTC Color Guard open up the

meeting by presenting and posting the colors. The speaker for

the morning was Major Robert L. DeWitt, retired. Major

DeWitt talked about his past and his experiences with the

JROTC program and the Flowing Wells High School program

in particular. After his talk, Major DeWitt was given a

Certificate of Appreciation by President Gerry Lawford. Also

honored at the luncheon were Sahuarita HS JROTC Essay

Winner Madeline Arbogast. Cadet Arbogast read her essay and

was presented with a $100.00 check and a Chapter Level

"Outstanding Cadet Certificate." Other awards given at the

luncheon were: Bronze Good Citizenship Medal to Commander

Bradley Roberson and Ten Year Membership Certificate to

Robert W. Vint (sometimes called "the younger"). Not one, but

two Certificates of Appreciation were given to John Patla plus a

tie. John has been serving the Color Guard diligently as a

drummer for various functions although he personally has not

been able to qualify as a SAR. It's our hope that we may be

able to correct that situation in the near future. Not present, but

given the Roger Sherman Medal Awards were: James

Kimbrough, Col. William T. Lincoln, George Lipphardt and

Joseph McGowan. Col. Lincoln also received at 30 Year

Membership Certificate. As an aside, Al Niemeyer was given

the miniature "tin cup" ( a half gill cup) and cigar award by

Color Guard Commander Rick Collins for his diligent

attendance at various Color Guard functions during the past few

weeks. Commander Collins then poured a shot of the "hard"

stuff into the cup which was gleefully consumed by Compatriot

Niemeyer.

(DAR Visitor Zilllah Symonds accepts the proceeds from the ROTC 50/50

contest from John Lyons. Zilllah Symonds would then donate the money back

to the ROTC program.)

New Meeting Location for September

Compatriots, after three successful meetings at our new

location The Old Pueblo Grille, we read in the newspaper that

it had closed after being seized by a U.S. Bankruptcy Court on

May 29th

. Having done an extensive search in February, we

contacted the 2nd

location on our list, The Hungry Fox, and

booked our September and October meetings there. The price,

which was an important consideration, remains at $16. I think

you’ll find the bill of fare to be to your liking. The Fox is

located at 4637 E. Broadway ( NE corner of Swan and

Broadway). Hope you’ll join us on September 19. Look for a

reservation form in the September Bugle.

The cigar was later smoked on the Niemeyer patio. It is

hereby noted that our Country is still in search of a good

five cent cigar. Lest it should be forgotten, Tucson Chapter

Gerard Lawford was honored for his five years as a SAR

member.

C.A.R. Kachina Society Summer

Update

Congratulations to the Kachina Society’s new slate of

officers. They are President-AJ Pierce, Vice

President/Historian-Elizabeth Yokley, Treasurer-Erin

Yokley, Recording/Corresponding Secretary/Chaplain-Max

Pierce, and Registrar/Librarian/Curator-Carly Caylor.

The Kachina Society kids participated in the Memorial Day

Service at East Lawn Cemetery on Monday, May 25, 2015.

They placed a wreath during the ceremony accompanied by

members of the El Presidio, Old Pueblo and Tucson DAR

Chapters. A BBQ was held after the ceremony and the kids,

senior officers and Tucson Chapter DAR members helped

serve over 150 attendees from the Memorial Day Service.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos, potato chips, cookies and

drinks were the hot items on the menu. The nachos were the

favorite serving item.

In honor of our WWII veterans we attended the 17th

Southern Arizona Honor Flight to leave Tucson carrying 72

veterans. We also placed a flag on the grave of Lt. Col. Alvin

I. Sutton, USAF retired. In WWII Lt. Col. Sutton flew many

missions in the B-25 Bomber over North Africa. On June 6,

2015 the Kachina crew attended Honor Flight’s GI Jubilee.

The kids donated a tree made out of their favorite candy for

Honor Flight’s Silent Auction. The auction raises funds to

help send WWII and Korean War veterans to Washington, D.

C. to enjoy the many commemorative monuments built to

honor our heroes.

On Flag Day we will be participating in the DAR Tucson

Chapter’s Flag box dedication at the Murphy–Wilmot Public

Library. The Flag box allows a proper deposit for worn and

tattered flags. The Kachina Society will lead the Pledge of

Allegiance at the dedication and hand out flags and patriotic

pencils and wristbands.

Jim Click Raffle Benefiting Tucson

Charities – Like us!

Jim Click has donated a 2015 Ford Mustang 50th

Anniversary Edition as the featured prize. The Mustang is

valued at $48,190. Only 1,964 of the Anniversary Edition

Mustangs were built. ALL money we raise selling the raffle

tickets stays in our club treasury. This is a no lose raffle for

our chapter. Any unsold tickets just need to be returned

prior to the raffle drawing. We have until November 6th

to

sell tickets with the raffle being held on November 13th

.

The price is $25 for one ticket / five tickets for $100.

If each member sold five tickets, we would sell out and earn

at least $2,000. This is a voluntary fundraiser, if you want

to participate, great. If you don’t want to, that is fine too.

The purchase of tickets by non-Arizona residents and

businesses is OK.

There are a limited quantity of glossy card stock promotion

flyers available. See the front side shown in the right

column.

Bill Aurand has our block of 100 each of the tickets and

would be overjoyed to check them out to any member to

sell. Just contact the editor.

Marshall Elementary School Visit

On a cool May 15th afternoon in Northeast Tucson, the

Tucson Chapter Color Guard consisting of Bill Aurand, Dr.

Rudy Byrd, Al Niemeyer and Ladies Auxiliary Theresa

Williamson, each gave talks to over 50 Fourth and fifth grade

students at the Marshall Elementary School. The children

responded enthusiastically to the talks and the display of 18th

century weapons and other paraphernalia. The afternoon

session was topped off with a schoolyard firing of muskets by

the color guard. It was an enjoyable afternoon.

Take 2 Cups flour, 1-1/2 teaspoons salt (optional), and 1 cup

water, mix together into a thick paste. Spread about ½ inch

thick. Cut into reasonable size biscuits and put several deep

holes into the biscuits to let out the steam. Bake at 375 for

about 30 minutes, flip and cook another 30 minutes.

Cooked hardtack is a light golden color, very dense and

hard. After fully cooling on a rack, this will last for a long,

long time.

Soldiers would fry hardtack in bacon grease to add some

taste, or soften it by soaking in tea or hot water.
