I wondered what I could do about the problem of the darkened stain, almost obliterating the name of one of our county’s heroes. The Crumpler name quickly appeared in my memory list of Raeford friends. I didn’t know if they could help but I knew they would lead me to someone who could.

I headed for the funeral parlor. When I arrived, there sat Dayne at her computer, not looking more than five years older than she looked when we were in the same first-year algebra class at Hoke High. I told her I needed some help, not just for myself but for all of Hoke County’s citizens.

I handed her the new red, white and blue flag that now took on a special meaning for all of us. It would mark the spot where one of Hoke County’s finest was laid to rest after fighting the noble fight. That little boy I knew as my brother’s best friend, as the foot-ball player at Hoke High, as the son of Pearl and Harvey, and the brother of Judy and Barbara—he had paid the debts for us and the nation. He laid down his life that November 30 as so many have done. Ten days later, he was laid to rest, under one of the only trees in that part of the cemetery.

Buy a couple of flags and stick them into a bag to keep in the trunk

of your car. Someday you might see a grave that you know needs a flag for service to our country. Make it a decision to try to find a grave that needs to be so honored. You might find yourself humming “My Country ‘Tis of Thee, sweet land of liberty...” as you walk back to your car.

Homecoming is always great, but seeing how Raeford and Hoke County honor their own proved once again that there is something that holds us together.

It might need to be cleaned and polished once in awhile but our honor of our veterans and service representatives is still alive and well.

A reminder about the museum: I continue to be amazed at the fine work that is being done. It is certainly true that we have one of the finest museums around! I know they are working on another project also, a special wedding dress exhibit. You remember that dress that you only wore once and boxed away. The museum would love to borrow it for an exhibit. Call Joyce Monroe to find out all about that exhibit.

Those who wish to may mail donations to the museum at PO Box 1383, Raeford, NC 28376. Museum hours are Sundays from 2-4 p.m. and Mondays and Tues-days from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

North Carolina’s blueberries are in season and it’s the perfect time to make homemade blue-berry muffins or scrumptious blueberry jam. (Editor’s note: or blueberry pancakes) Support local farmers by buying locally grown blueberries. If you would like to know where you could purchase homegrown blueberries, stop by the Extension Center for a list of growers. Here are some interest-ing facts that you might not know about blueberries.

With just 80 calories per cup and virtually no fat, blueberries offer many noteworthy nutritional benefits.

In just one serving, you can get 14 mg of Vitamin C – almost 25 percent of your daily requirement.

Vitamin C aids the formation of collagen and helps maintain healthy gums and capillaries. It also promotes iron absorption and a healthy immune system.

Studies have shown that most of us don’t get enough fiber in our diets. Eating foods high in fiber will help keep you regular, your heart healthy and your cholesterol in check. A handful of blueberries can help you meet your daily fiber requirement. What a tasty way to eliminate this worry from your day!

Manganese plays an important role in bone development and in converting the proteins, carbohy-drates and fats in food into energy – a perfect job for blueberries.

According to the U.S. Depart-ment of Agriculture (USDA), blueberries are near the top when it comes to antioxidant activity per serving (ORAC values). An-tioxidants work to neutralize free radicals — unstable molecules linked to the development of cancer, cardiovascular disease and other age-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s. Substances in blueberries called polyphenols, specifically the anthocyanins that give the fruit its blue hue, are the major contributors to antioxidant activity.

Blueberries are healthy and in seasonStore blueberries in the refrig-

erator, covered and unwashed. When you get ready to use the berries, take them out of the re-frigerator, wash and serve.

For more information about fresh blueberries in Hoke County, contact Mary Hollingsworth, Horticulture Agent at the Hoke County Coopera-tive Extension Center, located at 116 West Prospect Avenue, Raeford or by telephone at 910-875-3461 or by email at [email protected].

The Hoke-Raeford Museum held its last meeting on Tuesday, June 19th with 12 members pres-ent. A new board member, Crystal King, was introduced and she was added to the alarm call list since she lives next door.

Joyce Monroe thanked every-one who helped with the Fire-man’s Association Dinner. She gave a special thank you to all those who had helped with the cooking and serving.

The Singing on the Grounds and the Parker House Project were discussed. A committee was formed to look into the Parker House Project, and they will report back to the board soon.

Several donations have been received. This includes a picture from Rachel Stevens of the old Stevens’ home place, informa-tion about it, and a donation to the museum. Ed (Leon) Cameron gave the museum many pictures, old deeds and papers from the Cameron history and a donation. Mary Neil King presented a pro-

posal from FirstHealth Founda-tion, with their donation, to put a plaque in the Medical Room. They also wish to use the dining room for small meetings. A donation came from Howell Drug Co. (Tom Howell)—the milkshake machine and hopefully more items as they begin to close the sandwich shop. They wish to make a small drug store display in the corner of The Bank of Raeford Room.

Mrs. Monroe stated her need to acquire one or two computers. Charles Tapp suggested he might be able to get these for her.

Mrs. Monroe and Delia Mc-Neill are still looking for a sec-retary and someone to learn the computer. If anyone would like to volunteer during the summer for job credit, he or she should contact

Mrs. Monroe at the museum on Monday or Tuesday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The board members are still looking for wedding dresses, so everyone needs to ask around for older wedding dresses. The museum has some mannequins that can be used but still need to get them to stand on their own.

Jimmy Sinclair from Raleigh came by the museum recently, and he will be coming back to spend the day with Mrs. Monroe and help write letters to people that he knows may have a lot of history stored in their homes. If anyone knows of anyone in or around Raeford that they should contact, get the names and ad-dresses to them.

Visiting hours for the mu-seum are Sunday afternoons from 2-4 p.m. and on Mondays and Tuesdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come and see all the changes to the museum, inside and outside, at these hours.
