According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, to "plagiarize" means to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as

one's own to use (another's production) without crediting the source to commit literary theft to present as new and original an idea or product derived

from an existing source

In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud. It involves both stealing someone else's work and lying about it afterward.

Do I have to get a score of zero to avoid being accused of plagiarism?No. Small fragments and phrases or bits of references are not a problem. Lecturers really only look for large chucks of text that have been copied verbatim without attribution (that means without any reference being cited).

How much would I have to copy to be guilty of plagiarism? There’s no set figure in the University Regulations, it just says, a “substantial amount” and the interpretation of this has to be made by your lecturer in the context of the work.

What if I copied a lot of material but put it in speech marks and gave references? Would that be OK?Not really, it wouldn’t be plagiarism but it would be poor scholarship since you would simply be presenting the work of others without adding much of your own. This would result in a lower mark and perhaps even a fail.

So how much of a piece of work should consist of quoted material?There’s no answer to that, it depends very much on the subject matter and format. I generally advise my students when they write essays that the work should not have more than 10% of quoted material, but this is a guide not a rule and what is appropriatemay vary between subject and assignments.

Case #1 : the follow-up study Found 45% and 8% matches to two previous publications in JBJS. Both were cited in the reference list. The manuscript was referred to the editorial department supervisor due

to the high percentages of duplicated text. All three manuscripts had co-authors in common. The current submission

was a 20-year follow-up and the previously published manuscripts were the original study published in 2000 and a 15-year follow-up study published in 2005.

This submission was accepted and the manuscript entered the normal review process.

Case #2 : no plausible excuse

Similarity report showed a 35% match to four publications.

The relatively low percentages of duplication are deceiving

because, although the manuscript was a very brief case report, the

references had not been excluded, thereby diluting the

percentage of overall text duplication.

Nearly every word in the manuscript overlapped with another

source, only some of which were cited in the reference list.

JBJS declined to process and received no feedback from the

authors.

Case #3 : the language barrier

The Similarity report revealed significant overlap of many short text strings.

All overlapping text sources were cited. The authors were not native English speakers. The manuscript appeared to be well researched and it

was thought that the text duplication was probably compensating for deficiencies in the English language.

The authors were asked to revise in their own words, perhaps with the help of a medical editor, and resubmit.

Case #4 : data mining

35% match to three similar publications with common authors and slightly different hypotheses.

The authors protested the journal’s suggestion that there was too much duplication.

Email documentation was retained by the editorial office staff in a permanent non-electronic folder.

The manuscript was allowed to proceed to review. The reviewers were not informed about the discussion.*** Editorial suggestion was preliminary screen, The manuscript may be proceeded if the authors were not agree with the editor. The decision to publish was done by reviewers.

Case #5 : the cover up The similarity report revealed a 16% match to a previously published

manuscript, which was cited. The overlap consisted of multiple paragraphs of exact duplication.

No authors were common to both manuscripts. JBJS declined the submission and informed the corresponding author. The corresponding author initially concealed the reason for the

decline from the senior co-authors, claiming the email had been deleted.

After a discussion with a senior co-author, the original email was resent to the corresponding author, who eventually shared it with the coauthors.

The senior co-author did not contest the decision and indicated there would be an institutional investigation.
