LEARNING AT WASHBURN TECH Our practical nursing program is designed for adult students. Instruction includes the knowledge, skills, attitudes and abilities needed to practice safely and effectively as an entry-level practical nurse. This program is approved by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. Attending full-day, you can complete the program in two semesters, while half-day evening students can finish in three semesters and a summer. Upon completion, you will earn a 47-credit-hour technical certificate, and be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses. Many options exist for career advancement in practical nursing including registered nursing at Washburn and other health care fields. JOB AND SALARY OUTLOOK This career forecast is bright due to an aging population and increased demand for health care services. According to the Kansas Department of Labor, the average salary for an entry-level LPN in 2018 was $16.93 an hour or $35,220 annually. The average wage was $20.89 an hour or $43,440 annually. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS You are required to take the Accuplacer and score a 5 on math and a 6 on reading. You also must have earned a Kansas Certified Nurse Aide certification. In addition, you must have completed: an approved Anatomy and Physiology course of six credit hours including lab within the last five years with a grade of “C” or better; an approved Nutrition course of three credit hours with a “C” or better; and an approved Human Development course of three credit hours with a “C” or better. Candidates must complete a paper application and submit transcripts. Selection is based on scores from a rubric and may also include a personal interview.
