TVARC Field Day 2015Operating Techniques
• CQing:– Find a clear frequency, call CQ, e.g.,
• “CQ Field Day, K4 Victor Radio Charlie, Field Day”• Someone may answer simply by sending their
callsign, e.g., “Kilo 3 Zulu Mike”• So, what do you do? You WORK them: “K3 Zulu
Mike, 2A North Florida”• Then he will send his exchange to you. It may be a
very brief: “1A Virginia”, or “roger, you’re 1A Virginia”
• You acknowledge and call CQ again: “Thanks, CQ Field Day, K4 Victor Radio Charlie, Field Day”
TVARC Field Day 2015Operating Techniques
• Search & Pounce (S&P)– Tune around (Search) until you find a nice clear
station calling CQ Field Day, e.g.,• “CQ Field Day, Whiskey 2 Golf Delta, Field Day”• Answer (Pounce) simply by sending your callsign,
e.g., “Kilo 4 Victor Radio Charlie”• If he hears you above any other callers, he will
send his exchange to you: “K4VRC copy 4A Northern New Jersey”
• You acknowledge and send your exchange to him: “Thanks, copy 2A North Florida”
• He will acknowledge, then call another CQ.
TVARC Field Day 2015Operating Techniques
• Phonetics on SSB– Use them! When you call CQ or answer
someone else’s CQ.– Please, please, please use standard
phonetics. Kilo 4 Victor Radio Charlie.
– That’s what the other op is expecting.– Don’t even use something meaningful, like
Kilo 4 Villages Radio Club. It is non-standard.

• For an excellent introduction, check out the video slide show by K8UT on the club’s website. I found it by navigating to “Radio Activities”, then “Field Day 2013”.
